Title: Another ferry sinks.

This is like the 2nd or 3rd ferry disaster in the past few weeks I think.

News I heard was that they overloaded the boat and started listing when everyone went over to one side of the boat. Although if they had time to call the captain you have to wonder why they didn't get half of them to go over to the other side of the boat so it seems a little unlikely.

I think (based on the morning report on the news) it capsized when turning away from the dock, possibly due to a wave, so maybe it just tipped due to having a high centre of gravity (those kinds of boats have fairly steep and tall hulls).

This is a bbc piccy of the setup; most people would apparently be on the upper deck.

That's just asking for trouble. Even my untrained eye can see that ship isn't going to be very stable.

It's center of gravity is much too high. It at least needs something attached to the bottom to counter the height (like what sailboats have).

Who designed that POS anyway?

The ship cant look like that in reality. I wouldn't float (ina way it is supposed to) even witohut the passengers! No one would seriously design a ship with lines like that. The shape must have been exaggerated to domonstrate the cause. Anyone got a real pic of the ferry?

Remember its also usually comparitibly wide too. Plus cars and **** are on the lower level and supposedly balance out the weight distribution.

The ferryman is busy...  :shaking:

You're right, that kind of thing probably wouldn't float very well (or for very long) as demonstrated by the object in following pic:

Three-masted royal Swedish ship Wasa, from 1627. Sank on her virgin voyage outside Stockholm's harbor, when a mild gust of wind knocked her over. Still, I bet she was planned with serious mind all right - only the designers on those days were not up to building technicues and consequences of their solutions. Nowadays designers should know better than to plan another Wasa, which leads me too to believe that the bbc pic was not entirely accurate..

Probably the ferry in question would be wider than it would seem from that side view there. Still, that bbc pic reminds me more of  Volition Bravos (or Wasa) than anything else. But regardless of the design, ships tend to sink if they are overloaded and/or the cargo is unbalanced. If the captain didn't sunk along his ferry, he should be stripped of rank and citizenship in the GTVA and executed at sunrise. Also the possible corporation(s) responsible of overbooking these ferries in hope of greater profit should be nailed and put under heavy surveillance not to do that again.
