Title: Poll: Best PC Game Soundtrack!
Post by: GodisanAtheist on April 03, 2006, 01:51:57 am
Limited to games released as retail on PCs (or Macs...) only, and no, ports don't count (as console gamers tend to get tons of quality music with their games).

My vote goes to Myth 2: Soulblighter. Damn, Marty O'Donnel understands music.

Runner up is Homeworld.

Righto, have fun with the voting and all that!

Yeah Pharaoh had some awesome music in it, I still think Pharoah was a better game than Children of the Nile, they sacrificed too many options to have full 3D imho.

I don't mind the Homeworld 2 tracks either, but I don't think I'd ever put it over Homeworld 1's music. It just doesn't seem as natural. Some parts are really out of place in the game. Otherwise it is fairly nice music, just perhaps not utilized in game as well as the original did.

Currently I am listening to "Room of Angel" from Silent Hill 4. When I say "am listening to" I mean "an listening to a lot". It's a truly astonishing piece of music that really gets under your skin. It's a shame it's stuck on a game soundtrack. Here's hoping they use it in the Silent Hill movie somewhere so it gets more exposure.

The Silent Hill movie is going to have a completely original score by Yamaoka in it, IIRC. And besides, considering how context sensitive Silent Hill's music tends to be I don't think it would work if they stuck a song that was designed for Silent Hill 4's story into the film.

Monkey Island I (it was MIDI, but it's still awesome)

You should hear that on the Mac version. It sounds 10x better than the dos version, as does the sequel. That seems to be the general trend for all the really old games.

Freespace 1 and 2 of course, that style of music really befits space warfare. Almost anything by Inon Zur (think the Baldur's Gate games, Klingon Academy, the latter two Prince of Persias), most of Jeremy Soule's stuff, although I never thought that well of Total Annihilation's soundtrack, or Morrowind's.

Best MIDI music has to go to TIE Fighter. I think it actually sounded better on an OPL2/3 sound card than on General MIDI, personally. All of the early LucasArts games really did have the best music, for that matter.

That's possible, never heard the Mac version, although it always depends on the soundcard/MIDI fonts used.

You can get the whole Monkey Island soundtrack in mp3 format at the SCUMM Bar (http://www.scummbar.com/resources/downloads/index.php?todo=MP3) btw.

Thing about the Star Wars games though is that you are comparing the work of John Williams with people who write game music, admittedly, Williams wasn't nearly as famous when he wrote the Star Wars themes, but he'd still got Lost in Space and, I think, a few series of Star Trek under his belt.

Edit : My bad on the Star Trek, however, he did music for Heidi, Goodbye Mr Chips, Jaws, Earthquake and the Poseidon Adventure as well as a host of other TV and Films before Star Wars

Chaos Gate
Freespace 1 and 2
Dawn of War Winter Assault(i just think it fits the 40K uni better the tha Dawn of War)
the babylon project
the orchestra stuff in Black and White 2

and the 2 very best in my opinions and i play these with the volume on full are, World of Warcraft soundtrack and Total Annihilation, i never liked orchestra music until i played Total Annihilation

Tie Fighter's music was actually something like 80% custom written and had nothing to do with John Williams. It just fits so well with the Star Wars theme that it sounds like it's John Williams ;) For most of the newer games I'd agree though, they too often just toss the whole SW score on the CD and play random tracks, though there are exceptions.

Yeah, I'm replaying Tie Fighter right now and it has a lot of upbeat remixes of the good old Empire theme. I think it's to make you feel proud of fighting for the Empire rather than it just being a gimmick or something, "Oooh, look at me! I'm one of the bad guys!" That's what makes that game great; it makes the Imperials seem like the good guys (sort of). Staying on topic, Neverwinter Nights has some great music as well as the other stuff already mentioned.

I like the soundtracks made by the following artists and in order:

Dan Wentz
Eric Brosius
Frank Keplacki
Bobby Prince

Favorite games's sountracks though, Freespace 1 and 2 still blow me away today.  I keep the entire soundtrack of FS2 on my shuffle, and FS1 on my PPC.  I liked the MIDI creations as well for Descent 2.  The Redbook tracks were quite good as well, prefer the first version of Descent 2 though, the one that included "haunted" by Type O-Negative, over the Definitive Collection version.
As for Brosius, System Shock 2's soundtrack, hands down the best I've heard from him.  The upbeat tekky parts get you in the mood, but the low, creepy tracks really enhance the freak-out factor of that game.  As for his MIDI's, I'm tied up between SS1 and Terra Nova, but I tend to like SS1's tracks, because there are a few in Terra Nova that are downright annoying.
Keplacki for C&C:Tiberium Dawn had a kick-ass soundtrack, my favorite of the C&C series.  Even in Tiberian Sun, he did a good job with the atmospheric tracks.
Who can forget Bobby Prince, who made the MUS tracks for Doom?  Hey, for MIDI created way back then, it was pretty darn good, and whoever did the remixes for the Doom Remake, did a decent job as well.  (Dj Redlight?)

Star Wars music.. gah, I am so sick of it all, wether it be John Williams or not, I can't stand it anymore.  Any new game I play that's even related to Star Wars, instantly, if the music can be muted in-game or switched off, it's OFF.  I've heard John Williams's stuff so much that I cant really enjoy the music done for other films he has composed for, like Saving Private Ryan, and such.  It's almost TOO much the same from piece to piece.  Slowly skittering off topic, Hans Zimmer does a better job in making music for films, being able to make different types of music and still sound fresh enough to not say "oh, another Zimmer track". Just in comparison to John Williams.  I guess this all means that I'm not a big Star Wars fan.  Eh?

Though it's probably technically considered a port, though it's build is different than the PS2's version, Final Fantasy 7's midis, still very very well done.  My favorite RPG-style soundtrack by far though over any other RPG I've played.

Well, the thread was excluding consoles . But now that you mention it, the Starfox/wing music was very good, especially the track in the asteroid belt level (on the 'easy' route), had sort of an Star Wars-ish epic feel to it.

Halo was built on a PC codebase before being ported to the Xbox, so it doesn't really count as a port when it was released on the PC.

Too be honest the music is something that I most easily disregard or fail to notice yet I know it hugely effects the atmosphere of a game. Ones that do stick in my mind are definately Myth and freespace (2 moreso than 1 in both cases). I haven't played Tie Fighter yet, it's in a pretty big queue of games sitting beside my computer, so I'm going to have to go with X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter. I know its the same old music  but it never gets old for me and that the first star wars game I bought.

Homeworld was good (mainly remember Adagio, I'm a big fan of that, and the Yes written song at the end credits I liked as well) and so was Halo, one of its far better aspects, certainly more so than level design or voice acting or weapons or...

Anyone know of a site that hosts old console games music? Mario IS class. Been humming it fairly regularily ever since I saw the forward of the guy playing them all on a piano a couple years back. Memories!

I like all of the Descent games' music, but if I had to choose one then I'd go with Descent 1 for it's utter creepiness and how well it added to the atmosphere of the game.
Both Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 had really great music.  For FS2 I especially liked Endgame, Numbers, Joshua chapter 2, and whatever the briefing music for the mission "Slaying Ravana" was.

And I could go on and on for music from nintendo games, but I won't.

Halo was built on a PC codebase before being ported to the Xbox, so it doesn't really count as a port when it was released on the PC.

:p

Of course you'd respond to that :p  First, the way Halo runs on a top-of-the-line PC would surely indicate that it was not finalized on the PC platform, but rather ported back to it.  It does count as a port.  Secondly, please note that I said Halo 2, a game which, as far as I know, was designed exclusively to the XBox.  Halo:CE is a PC game, at least in port, so does count, Halo 2 is a console exclusive, and so by the reasoning shown to that point in the thread, should have recieved the same response as Mario or Metroid.

That said, shortly after my last post in this thread, a girl who lives upstairs from me was passing by and her phone rang with the Mario Bros tune.  I had to stop her to tell her how awesome it was, nerd that I am.  So yeah, SNES classics FTW.

Well since SNES games mysteriously count as PC games now I must mention that FF6 has some of the best video game music EVER. Good overworld theme, good boss fight music, good everything else music. Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid must be mentioned too.
Ya'll can beam me for that one, mentioning FF7..  But since you mentioned it...
Cefca's mischevious theme is my favorite from FF6. Not "Dancing Mad", the final battle theme, but Cefca's own theme, played when he storms Figaro Castle and Doma Castle in the World of Balance.

No love for FF7?  *cries* - Remarkably well done even though the whole soundtrack was done in MIDI, and sounded like a completely different soundtrack if you didn't use the included XG Synthesizer.  I need to build my old Win98 box for that game again, just for the synthesizer.  I've had major problems getting it to work under XP, that is without having to pay for it (if they still offer it at all).

My phone will play MIDI files for ringtones which I can load onto it via a bluetooth link, and I've got the Briefing track from Descent 1 set for whenever my boss calls me...
I also have Levels 1, 2 and 12, the Simulator tracks from Terra Nova, Medical and Cyberspace tracks from SS1 on my phone, but none are actual ringtones.

 You have been out-nerded.

Is that the SYXG50 thing? I have that on my retro game computer. It came bundled on the driver CD for an old Asus motherboard. I really wanted to get it working on XP as midis sound awesome with it (I recorded many of the better ones from D1 and D2 off that computer), but it only works on 98/ME and NT4 and won't install correctly on XP. :(

Yes, that's it, cept it was like... SYXG 70 or something.  This particular version was included with FF7 PC, and it was a better build than the XG Lite synth you could get for free online from Yamaha.  There was the SoftXG and XGLite, to my ear, I liked the SoftXG better, probably because it had a richer patch kit with it.  I share the same woes with you, cause the awesome XG tracks are completely different from the General MIDI tracks.  In fact, there were tracks included for General MIDI, AWE32, and XG synths, which I thought was awesome to have, instead of being stuck with just the GenMIDI tracks.  You just don't see that anymore today with music, then again, with the ability to play back digital audio, music can be heard the way it was intended to be heard, or at least as close as possible.

That was an abbreviated list of the games I've played which had music which I consider to be required listening for any music buff ;)

And yes, I tend to be overly verbose. :D

Seriousy 'tho, I must admit I hadn't considered how many games I've played in total over the years until I came up with that list!

And thinking further, I reckon my list of Worst Music in a Game is also fairly long... too! ;)

I spent some time last week recording all the Lemmings soundtracks from the Basilisk mac emulator into mp3s. They sound amazing in 44khz, incomparably better than the 11khz line-out recordings I had taken off my old mac a few years ago.

And I could go on and on for music from nintendo games, but I won't.

This is precisely why I said no to console games.

Anything remotely quality on the console probably had a fantastic soundtrack. Consoles are just like that. Throw in some massive nostalgia factor and whats the point of this thread?

Please keep it limited to PC games you've played. You can always make another topic for Console games.

Maybe an admin would be so kind to split the threads? I don't know..

On a side note...
My beyer DT770 cans just arrived.  It's gonna be a long night revisiting all of these tracks again.  Square wave never sounded this beautiful... *brain melts*

Are you using an amp of some sort? I was thinking of buying that one at one point but the high impedance rating threw me off, as I would have to spend another $50-100 on an amp. It's supposed to have very accentuated bass, which should be especially good for games.

If you can get your hands on the 80Ohm version you won't need an amp, especially with a Creative Labs souncard.  I think Creative cards put out enough watts to drive anything from 32-100 ohms effectively.  There really isn't a price difference between the two, as far as I have seen.  I put them through the wringer tonight.  Drum n Bass, House, Jazz, Classical, Rock, MIDI, James Brown, it all sounds so much cleaner than the sony MDR-CD780's  I used to use.  I have seen the light and have been converted!  My "boycott" of Sony products may continue unabated!
The bass on these isn't punchy, or big and boomy like on the Sony MDR-V700DJ's, but it sure lets you know that it's there! Some low freq's (Dom&Roland's "Imagination") can be reproduced on these, that could not have been reproduced on my 700DJ's or CD780's.  Absolutely incredible.  I now need to reload FEAR and SS2 for game testing.

Cool, it looks like they have a new 80 ohm version out now. There was only the 250 ohm one when I was buying a year ago. Looks like another thing I have to consider getting. The extra bass on those should make them outstanding for games, especially things like explosions and gunfire.
