Title: The KOOLEST keyboard evar!?
Post by: Omniscaper on April 18, 2006, 02:29:40 am

I'd like to see this upclose and personal! I have heard, that OLEDs have a lifespan though :( But I LOVE the idea of having the keyboard as an extension of your monitor. In the end, is it novelty? I dont think so. Think of the benefits of such a versatile device. And also imagine it as a new target for spammers, hackers, pop ups. I can see it now...... porn pop ups on my keyboard..... lol

We are getting closer to the touch panels Star Trek TNG promised.... a practical version anyway. Tablet PC's and Wacom's LCD Tablet are other cool technologies.

Old, old old old. Old old old, old old, old old. Old old - old - old old! Old... old old. Old, old old old; old old, old old. Old!

It's just that it has been posted a few times before dude.
Da it is cool though. But so is the fridge, and the fridge provides me with beer. So Fridge > than keyboard.
I think I've made my point. >..>

Given the current lack of search function I'd say that it's a bit harsh to pull the 'It's been done before' card.

On the same subject have a look at the virtually indestructable keyboard (http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=37).

"Virtually indestructable" soft roll you dig out of your jacket pocket and toss to the table, then your dog eats it.

I'd actually never seen any posts about this keyboard before. and I think it looks great. Certainly better than my old PCLine thing with all the letters wearing off the keys through over-use :)

You mean the 'budget' PC-line keyboard?

Got one of them myself. Probably the best £10 I ever spent on my computer. The ASDCNE keys are fairly worn but the keyboard's still going strong. As a result of levering off the Windoze keys and the three Power/Suspend/Wake keys (those six are the most utterly useless keys ever added to the standard QWERTY design) I have six spare keysprings, which should last me 30 or 40 years on current showing.

If I ever replace this keyboard, it'll be for an original Model M.

Re: keyboard with key displays.
It's a gimmick, mostly. I can see how it could be useful for developers using apps with complex key schemes, but if I ever see one at a LAN party I'll know who has the most money to burn.

The indestructible keyboard... a good idea, but is it proof against a Leatherman blade, or a soldering iron? I suspect it handles like a laptop keyboard too; there's a reason why I hate laptop keys.

my meaning of "Virtually indestructable" : Able to survive any liquid spills, particularly the liquid left over from a cup of 2 minute instant noodles (chicken flavor)

Heres an odd concept. http://www.virtual-laser-keyboard.com/

I still prefer some form of tactile feed back or sound response when I type. But then again, I dont touch type and I still use the 4 finger method that requires eyeballs. One day I will force myself to learn that skill.

I'm still really stoked about  Eleksen's fabric keyboards  (http://www.eleksen.com/)
A keyboard that you can roll up and slip into your bag, and roll it out on nearly any surface, to type into a PDA, Cellphone, anything that's bluetooth enabled.  It'd be hella nice to switch between PDA and Cell when you need to quickly text someone, typing it out on a keyboard like that would make things a breeze.  Especially when T9 predictive text input is just about as good as John Edward's psychic abilities...

You're looking for "Water Proof" - not "Virtually indestructable".

The indestructable one is reserved for these cases

That laser keyboard has to be one of the worst ideas I've seen. As if standard keyboards didn't fsck up your fingers enough! A keyboard with no give in the buttons is just terrible.

Every time you hit a key, the stroke abruptly ends when the key reaches the bottom of the stroke. The key doesn't activate until it reaches the bottom of the stroke either, and the keysprings are designed in such a way that the resistance to the stroke is greatest mid-way down, instead of increasing throughout.
The result is a myriad little shocks up your fingers as you type, which is definitely not good for your hands. Laptop keyboards are even worse: the strokes are very short and sharp. Solid surfaces? Bloody awful.

The really old-fashioned keyboards, such as the old Model M, have entirely different keyspring/switch designs. The key activates about halfway down and the push resistance increases gradually, making the stroke bottom out naturally.
Far better for the hands, but they cost a hell of a lot more to produce. Modern keyboards cost about £10. Model M keyboards, assuming you can find them, cost about £80... and that's second-hand. I don't think they're still in production.

Sure, if you type like a cave man. Normal people subconsciously learn how much pressure is required to activate a key, and don't press any harder than that (gaming use excepted).

Also, Model M style keyboards are still manufactured by Unicomp (http://www.pckeyboard.com/customizer.html).

With that sort of disposition, no wonder they started two world wars. I bet they need riot police in Berlin every time a Coke machine is out of service. Hell, the language makes gives the impression of pure harted and loathing for all sentient life.

Since the key only makes contact at the bottom of the stroke, it's still going to hit the keyboard base and stop abruptly, unless you're subconciously accurate to within a micron or so. The keyspring assists with the downward motion after a certain point, which makes things worse.

Really? Excellent! I know what to treat myself with when I finish my exams...

... although I expect my housemates will get sick of the perpetual loud clicking of metal keysprings. :p

False. If you'll notice, there's still a small amount of travel in rubber-dome keyboards even after the keystroke has registered.

as stated before, i'm a little bit leery of a keyboard made of light, i prefer the overall feel of keys under my touch.
