Title: Eve-Online: Worth it?
Post by: Jetmech Jr. on April 19, 2006, 05:33:19 am
Been looking around lately for a fun game to play in my spare times, and needless to say, I love space-based games. Recently, EVE Online has caught my eye with it's oh-so-pretty graphics and features.

So, I feel the need to ask here, where I know there is a good percentage of intelligent people who can give me an accurate answer:

Is the game worth forking over money for? Anyone have a good breakdown of it's actual gameplay?

Play the free trial for 14 days and find out for yourself dude. Best way to be sure. ;)

It's an okay game, but you can't really do much without being part of a good corporation.

With WoW, you can happily run around on your own all the way up to Level-60 and only really miss out on the group-based parts of the game.

With EvE, you'll get podded to **** all the goddamn time, and without a bunch of other players backing you, you're pretty much restricted to high-security systems. Plus, I didn't like the fact that skill acquisition is entirely time-based - and Level-5 skills take 30 days to learn.

If you can grab maybe 20 dedicated players to start a corporation with, you should be able to do some cool stuff. But eventually you'll need to join one of the big alliances if you want to participate on an inter-regional level.

It's an extremely people-skill oriented game.

I have been playing EVE for about 3 months now and I am liking it quite a bit.  EVE is primarily a corp based game so its obvious that loners are going to have it rough in Low-sec space.  While training is time based you train while offline also and most Rank 1 (basic) skills take about 11-12 days total to level to LV5.  You can get a skill to LV4 in under 2 days if you keep a eye on your training.  Its quite simple, train LV1-2 in one go, LV3 overnight and then LV4.  LV5 is only for players who are going to play EVE long-time and need access to the higher tier skills.

One thing to take note however, EVE does not play like Freespace as in you don't have manual control over your craft.  The lowest form of control you have is double clicking empty space to tell your ship to go in that direction,  the rest is flying between stations and gates and orbiting targets.  Its not that bad.  EVE is big and you will be thankful that you don't need to constantly have your hand on your mouse to get your ship from A to B.

Sign up for a trial account and run through the (long) very helpful tutorial.

An MMO is the last place you should be looking for a game to fill spare time.

EDIT: If you're looking for a space-based game that can easily be played in short bursts, you should pick up Weird Worlds (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/digital_eel/weird_worlds/1.htm).

A few of us loyally play Eve now. Grugg, Hunter, Flipside, Thorn, Ashrak, Night Hammer, MatthewPappa, StratComm, Phreak, myself etc. It's fun, but you can't just play every so often, you have to play a lot - well worth it though, and to clarify an0n's point, lvl5 isn't something you want/need to train every day, theres loads more skills that take 10m to 6h to do etc. Try it and see for yourself.

I describe my spare time as "the time I spend playing games when I'm not doing schoolwork."

I.E. I'm looking for a new MMO Addiction (since I'm getting a bit burned out with WoW).

Why don't you guys start an HLP Corporation or something?

Hah, do that, and I guarantee I'll start playing, JUST to join.

It even sounds like a Space-based company.

We had one for sectorgame, it's been flopping, but we all stay in close contact, half of us having followed thorn (and then me) intoa  different corp.

I personally never got into EVE, but this (http://www.ogame.org) has had me thoroughly addicted the last few weeks.

Skill training time is long at first but once you train your learning skills up to 5, you will cut the time in half. However, getting into a good corporation is crucial to advanced gameplay like dreadnoughts, carriers, control towers, and lots of isk. Basically the more you progress, the more expensive it is to buy newer skills, bigger better ships, and equiptment (buying the ship becomes half the cost) Plus most corps do not like trial members in them so if you do the trial it would be for the appearance, movement and basic gameplay. Been playing for almost 3 years, wouldnt think of leaving now.

Uhhh I couldent find much info on O-game from the website. Whats this about registering with different 'universes'? Is it an RTS or TBS or what? Do you actually play it in your web browser?
Title: Re: Eve-Online: Worth it?
Post by: Nuclear1 on April 24, 2006, 09:15:29 am
OGame allows you to register for specific universes like servers; you're given a planet in the universe you register for, and then you just expand and build from there. The construction is in semi-real-time; it can take higher-level buildings upwards of a real hour to construct, and some technologies 6-8 hours. It demands that you spend a significant amount of time throughout the week, but it's addictive.

But, to answer your question, it's much more an RTS than anything.

Question - how can you get a free trial?  I can't find it on their website...

For which? OGame or EVE? OGame is free, period; EVE, I'm not all too sure about.

eve has like a 2 week trial from gamespot, not sure what the page is though

If you need an eve trial, PM one of the players your email, and they can send you one without you having to drudge through gamespot, its faster too :p ...

Google search works wonders ;)  In fact, it's the sponsored link.  Search "eve online free trial" and look at the first thing on the page.

Yes, but the gamespot thing can take up to an hour, the buddy program is instant, and no waiting for a dozen emails...

yes, it's definately worth it.

while the skill training is kinda frustrating, it is designed to where you won't get wtfpwned by 3-year old players. 5 months into the game and you can do pretty well for yourself.

right now I'm part of one of the largest alliances, and we're getting ready to deply 3 new outposts (it's no longer a secret thanks to some accidental leaks... but I won't say when or where  :nervous: )

ISS ftw

on a note most of you might remember Libra Wars, EvE is basically what I wanted it to be but is so much better.

Our research has been fruitful.  If you're interested, I believe we could have a patentable Scourge Precision Heavy Missile Blueprint.  Contact me as soon as possible if you're interested.

If you play eve, join the "SGAM" channel, its where all the cool guys hang out.  As for me, i'll be joining back up with Axiom once school finishes.

Hhmmm.  Finally got it to work (had some graphics card issues) and got through the tutorial (long!).  I've got maybe $30k and the base ship.

Should I try mining?  What's something easy I can do during a trial period to get a real full experiance out of EVE?

You're confusing ISS and Goonfleet. Most of the ISS Navy groups I see have about three-five members.

hmm... try running combat missions with agents, or deadspace complexes to get a handle on combat.

what race are you?

Heretic - I'm a Gallente Gallente.  Combat from the training was kinda meh, but I'm willing to try more interesting missions.
