Title: Some updates..
Post by: Scooby_Doo on May 06, 2006, 03:32:29 am
I guess the other topic has sputtered out and actually these should be going in a new topic and not a re-release one.

Paktothfang bomber.

Model is really nice, but it definitly needs a better name :)

You could even make it a little bid bigger and see it as the kilrathi equivalent of the Centurion Privateer ship.

I don't know the length for the Centurion, but this bomber is 40m long and about 66m wide.

As for name... I'm up for suggestions LOL

Nice model, but is it just me or did Origin + Co. just throw together th's and kath's to make Kilrathi ship names? :p

I think they also used 'ith's and 'ra's.

Like the Ithkathrath.

"Ithkathrath" I'll have to remember that name...

The next in line, Tembler rechristened as "Cobra" (as in the Cobra helicopter)

Yikes apparently using skylight in max increases your rendering time many fold UGH.... and lighting was way too bright (unless of course their close to a star, sorta reminisent of Apollo landings.)

Patrol Watch...

(took 2 hours to render with just the normal settings  :nervous:)
Title: Re: Some updates..
Post by: supernova on May 11, 2006, 04:58:23 pm
if your skylight is too bright just turn it's intensity down...when using radiosity, i usually have the skylight set to about 0.1 or so...pretty low, but just about right for having other lights in the scene

Question real fast...exactly how slow is your computer??? :D   Unless you're using multilayer maps and about ten raytraced lights and shadows, and about 400K polygons...how does that picture take 2 hours to render in max?   I use skylights all the time and average render times are somewhere around five to ten minutes, and that's with bumps, specular, diffuse, raytracing, 4-6 lights, raytraced shadows, skylight, 100k polys, glows, motion blur, lens effects, depth of field, etc...and that takes about 12 passes to render.

maybe you're doing something with that scene that i'm not seeing in the picture...

OLD

LOL it's a P2@450... :shaking:  :nervous:

The problem was, without skylighting it took only a few minutes to render and looked pretty good... however that skylight added the light and i wasn't about to spend another two hours afterwards LOL

BTW as you can tell, Cobra's textured and ready for conversion.

OLD

LOL it's a P2@450...

OMG

That would explain the difference in render times, man, i'd hate to see some of my work render on your computer...i used to use Max on an Duron 600 system, and scenes that took between six and twelve hours, now take about ten to twenty minutes on my "new" rig.   It's not that fast, but certainly faster than before.

Well I was in the process of building a X2 3800.... but with Core 2 Duo in just a couple of months... UGHHHH *Frustration* LOL
Title: Re: Some updates..
Post by: gevatter Lars on May 13, 2006, 07:00:59 am
Didn't I said that skylights aren't good for your current PC ^_^
Also you could "copy" the effect. Well it isn't exactly a skylight then but should reduce rendertimes....now I would have to remember what I made. I think it was something about a lot of omnis...can't remember.

Well I was in the process of building a X2 3800.... but with Core 2 Duo in just a couple of months... UGHHHH *Frustration* LOL

hmmm...i always recommend AMD...then again i'm biased.   But the X2 platform if fantastic and has practically all the benchmarks in it's favor.   Funny thing is, its the Core Duo Intel procs that are the only ones that actually can compete when it comes to games...

even more hilarious, is that Pentium M architecture is based upon the P3...the much older cousin of the P4...i guess that explains why they're shortening their instructions pipeline and lowering frequency(heat issues).

I think that Core Duo or X2 would be the way to go though...both are quality architectures...but like i said, go AMD and support the marketshare underdog.
Title: Re: Some updates..
Post by: Scooby_Doo on May 13, 2006, 03:01:29 pm
Well not Core Duo, rather Core 2 Duo (Conroe), which by the looks of it will have the benchmarks in it's favor big time (C2D middle end beating high end FX-60 by ~20%).  Just have to wait and see..
I read that C2D will also have resemblences to my chip P2 too

21 model completed  :)
Maybe I should post a seperate thread for each model.  The mods would kill me   :p

Cobra, light fighter, was Privateer 2's Tembler.  I need to figure out the idea gun convergence.

Edit: Opps sorry about the non-standard resolution (1280*1024 i think)
I also need to build a excel sheet and try and balance speed, agility between everything.

Thanks :-)

Since I posted this on CIC I might as well give you "sneak peaks" too. (If you saw it on CIC then you've already seen everything so far)

Black Widow (aka a symetric CIS Heretic) [it's UVed and ready for texturing as soon as I'm done with my current Saga model)

Just for a change of pace... not really sure I like the results or not..
Could someone find a good "vorlon like" organic texture?

Kriska (yup that was a HHriss) As you can tell, my Kilrathi fighters are aiming for both WC1/2 and 3/4/5, symertic, rounded yet sharp claw like.

Talon Mk2 (something about the lack of main stabilizing wings make it look more like a unsafe dart :p  ) [also uv'ed]

Gothhek (still getting detailed) (a Gorthi Grikath stepchild :p )

Unnamed, Suggestions? This one's based off of (http://www.wcnews.com/newestshots/thumb/wco10t.gif). Still needs small stuff (cockpit, guns, engines) , shouldn't take long.

SWACS Seagull (Like seahawk)
(It's only 20m longer than the Venture, and yes that is a correctly scaled cockpit, in fact the entire cockpit area is enough space to house the living quaters of a corvette.)

And finally (so far....)
the Flak Frigate Gilgamesh
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v356/Shodan_AI/gilga-1.jpg)

Edit:
Vindicator Mk 2

I prefer it.  Maybe you should add another layer of finer lines 'under' the current hullplate lines, if you think it's too bland.

Hm, nice design, but I think that model would benefit from a little more smoothing of the hard edges. Also the size of the cockpit/nose seems to look a little of scall. Make the nose longer and thicker (but keep the size of the cockpit) :)
Title: Re: Some updates..
Post by: Mars on June 01, 2006, 01:40:46 pm
I don't mind the edges, I think it looks better with those extrusions, but the cockpit is kinda small.

Well, the Galaxy was utterly bloody huge, so it's not that small in context.

Well this one is ~40 meters long (med bomber), the nose section came off the Shrike.
Does this view look better?

That screams assualt shuttle, both ship to ship and as a landing craft. I think you have a winner there. Cockpit needs to be narrower i think, or a tandem araingment for being so wide. Remember the glass bits are big red targets. However these are my opinions and not to be taken seriously if they are not cared for.
Title: Re: Some updates..
Post by: Scooby_Doo on June 01, 2006, 08:28:04 pm
assault shuttle sounds interesting, flatten the bottom and give it some sort of hatch to burn through the hull and allow the squad to board.

Tandom cockpit... hmmm I've been trying to think of new ideas for a new cockpit style, I'll see what I can do.

Edit: Actually the Galaxy will remain a bomber, the Orion looks more like an assault shuttle.

Reconfig the engines, plus it looks perfect for tandom seating.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGG
I was about ready to release another pack, and guess what's happening again.... fs2 locking up.  Thought I had solved that problem :hopping:

Edit: Well fs2 debug isn't giving any more error dialog messages anymore, but still locks up.
Title: Re: Some updates..
Post by: Scooby_Doo on June 12, 2006, 02:05:43 am
I think I might have fixxed the locking problem, rebuilt my entire weapons table. *crosses fingers*

Now I've got a question about weapon energy.  I'm trying to get it to resemble more WC style, rather than FS's hold the trigger and spray everything in sight.

How is weapon energy usage per shot calculated and whats the +/- percentage based on skill level (at least those of easy and medium)? Also is weapon energy usage dependant on the number of guns in that mount?

I've got everything setup in a nice Excel worksheet and heres what i got as an example:
Particle cannon uses 2.2 energy, tachyon cannon uses 4 energy.
Now the fighter (with 2 part and 3 tach) has a reserve of 100 points, which means I should be able to fire off (without any gun recharging) ~22 part shots, ~8 tach shots and 6 linked.
But in reality i get about 12 parts and 6 tach shots and 4 linked.  The tachyon calcs look very close, but the particle ones are way off.
Title: Re: Some updates..
Post by: Scooby_Doo on June 12, 2006, 08:20:16 pm
Actually I'm starting to think it's the media vp's that are causing the lockup.  Could be my system just isn't fast enough to handle them.

Post by: Colonol Dekker on June 13, 2006, 05:17:03 am
Great work, with regards to energy use increase based on gunbank size, Im not sure is there any differnce between (for arguemnts sake) a Myrmidons energy consumption firing from the 2 point bank or the 4 point?

BTW "another pack"? Is there a link to the first at all Mr Doo?
