Title: Help with wireless internet?
Post by: Corsair on May 07, 2006, 09:08:07 am
Okay, so I've got a wireless internet set up at home, using a Linksys router. I'm sure there's a way to check who's been using the internet and what they've been using it for (downloads, webpages visited, that sort of thing). Anybody know how to access that sort of history? I've got the feeling I might have an unwanted neighbor or something using my connection and if I do then I'm gonna password it or something. But how do I check to see?

Thanks!

Check your router manual, if your router has a logging feature it is for sure mentioned in the manual. In most cases such extensive logging is not enabled by default, only errors are logged. Don't even bother checking if someone has used your wireless router, because if you haven't had ESSID broadcast disabled and haven't used WLAN encryption, someone most likely has.

In any case, you should ALWAYS have WLAN encryption enabled, either WPA or WEP, of the two WPA is more secure. Secondly, you should ALWAYS have ESSID broadcast disabled. When ESSID is not broadcasted, you can wirelessly only connect to the router if you know its ESSID. In this regard it is a bad idea to use default ESSID. You can make your wireless router even more secure by using MAC filtering, check your router manual for details. In most cases using unique ESSID, disabling ESSID broadcast and setting up WPA encryption is enough.

Insecure wireless router is basically you screming to the neighbourhood "Free broadband right here!"

Linksys has a logging feature. You can automatically tell it to send a log text file to your computer based on your IP address. Better thing to do is to secure it with either WEP or WPA security. WPA is a more secure encryption, just make sure you remember the password and enter it into any computer you want to connect to the network. Always always ALWAYS secure your network if you want to keep pesky leeches off of it. And dont make the passkey identical to the network name... many a time ive cracked into a network by entering the network name as the password.
