The Sony conference just concluded.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=98549&page=49
Nongame highlights:
HDD standard. No price announcement.
Games:
GTHD dissapoints, no modeled interiors, stiff crowds, low draw distance and pop-in, PGR3 looks better. Very quick loading times.
Heavenly Sword, looking REAALLLY nice.
Wierd card game, interesting concept, but looks like poor execution???
Singstar, for those that like it...
Formula 1, graphics are not outstanding but PSP integration to act as a wing mirror is cool if gimmicky.
Resistance: Fall of Man, graphics are Doom 3 level, rips a bunch of stuff from Halo (needler + flood), but has a bunch of crap happening at once.
I'm not going to comment on the non-live trailers that were shown.
-
MGS4 looks hot. Raiden = NINJA BBQ!!!
LMAO!!!
NINTENDO has been RIPPED OFF AGAIN!!!
DS3 "innovates" "6 degrees of freedom."
Yeah bloody right Sony.
-
Actually, there was a price announcement right at the conclusion. 499 USD/Euros for the 20GB version, 599 USD/Euros for the 60GB version.
-
Price:
"Today we're pleased to announce the global PS3 launch details. We will make PS3 available via a two-configuration plan. One with a 60GB HD. And the other with a 20GB hard drive. Japan's date: Nov. 11. In Japan 59,800 Yen. The 60GB PS3 will have an open price which retailers will set. In North America: 20GB for $499, 60GB for $599. Europe has 20GB for 499 Euro, 60GB for 599 Euro. 2 million to ship worldwide during the launch window. 4 million by end of calendar year 2006. By March 31, 2007 they'll have shipped 6 million worldwide."
Ruh-roh.
-
Actually, there was a price announcement right at the conclusion. 499 USD/Euros for the 20GB version, 5999 USD/Euros for the 60GB version.
Yeah, just saw that.
That's too much. North America is now going to be dominated by Microsoft or Nintendo.
-
$20 says the **** up distribution as bad or worse than MS...
$499-$599US eh? I'm in a bit of a hurry, so can anyone say how much that'll be in $AUS?
-

People are flexible. You probably won't see quite the domination of the market that they've had in some of the earlier generations, but people will suck it up and buy the 20GB version, I'd say.
-
That's very optimistic. When the PS3 launches MS will have the advantage price wise.
The one thing that puts MS in a quandary is being the only one of the three without a motion sensitive controller.
-
I doubt we'll see much of a price drop by MS before November. They're probably already taking a loss.
Personally? I'm waiting at least a year or two to get a next-gen system. Until then, I'll just stick with my N64, PS2, and computer.
-
Seriously, I think Sony just shot themselves in the foot if you can get an X360 and a Wii for the price of a PS3.
-

2 million units at launch. Worldwide.
-
Beats most console releases, Deepblue.
Honestly, the only option anyone has is to wait and see. Doomsaying or overoptimism won't help anyone.
-
NM.

Hard at work I see.

Yes.

"Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration
feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK® and DUALSHOCK®2 controllers for
PlayStation and PlayStation®2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."
...
"PS3 Tard pack = No wifi + No HDMI + No MemoryStick /SD/CompactFlash"
Without HDMI, Blu-Ray is as good as useless.
...
It also weighs 5 kg.
...
Only 4 USB ports rather than the original 6.
...
The case also got substantially larger than the model Sony touted last year.
Hardware downgrade confirmed.
This is from the official press release.
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/060509ae.pdf
-
Actually, the vibration is out because someone else has a patent on it.
-
Thank the gods the vibration is finally out.
It only interfeirs with the gameplay, and you have to be substantially retarded to actually believe you're in the game when the **** shakes. I always have it off anyway, because it heavily cripples my gameplay. The exact same thing goes for joysticks.
That's why it's going to be a light joystick instead of the heavy batong it's been so far. Back to the old model, just with the analogue sticks this time. Old school, I welcome you with open arms.

As of March 2006, there are already over 230 PS3 games announced by multiple developers and publishers, like SCEI, Electronic Arts, Konami, Namco, Capcom, Square Enix, Microsoft, Sega and many others. As well as announced titles there are likely to be many 'secret projects' already under development.
Most developers have already announced games for the PS3. Some anticipated ones include Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , Killzone PS3, Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Silent Hill 5, Shin Megami Tensei, Armored Core 4 , Unreal Tournament 2007, Resistance: Fall of Man, Grand Theft Auto 4: Hawaii Luau (provisional title), Final Fantasy XIII, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Tekken 6.
At the E3 2005 Press booths, Sony showed some pre-rendered and some real-time videos of games in development with the codenames Eyedentify, Vision Gran Turismo and MotorStorm. Also shown at E3 was a Final Fantasy VII technical demo of the opening sequence remade for the PlayStation 3 system. Square Enix stated afterwards that there aren't any plans for a remake of Final Fantasy VII at the moment, but that there is, indeed, a Final Fantasy title in development for the PlayStation 3.[2] At this time, 3 games have been mentioned as PS3 launch titles: Lair from Factor 5, Warhawk from Incognito Entertainment, and Unreal Tournament 2007 from Epic Games.
All great known titles, but I would want to see Shin Megami Tensei (Atlus), Armored Core 4 (Agetec/From Software) and Sonic: Next Gen (Sega/Sonic Team)...
-------------------------------------------
Do any of you remember the times were Metal Gear story started over Microsoft console (one of the MSX models), it is really funny to see how all of this companies Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega and Sony have somewhat either were really close or even worked togheter (Nintendo and Sony did)
-
I intended this thread for the press conferences. If you wouldn't mind, you can start a different thread with a compilation of all the new screenshots released, etc.
-
Nuh... this makes me feel sick as I type this, but I agree with Deepblue about the pricing.
I mean, come on 600 for the premium pack. Thats a lotta money... I mean, one could go and get a pretty good mid-ranged PC for that price point, or hell, a 360 premium pack and three games and a second controller. And if the rumored 200-250 pricetag of a Wii is true, thats even worse news for Sony. I think with Sony charging that much for a system, the days of 60-70 dollar games are going to come to an end, because that is just insane to force that upon your consumer base.
I bet Nintendo is in panic mode about the controller, and M$'s response is going to be rather interesting.
-
$20 says the **** up distribution as bad or worse than MS...
$499-$599US eh? I'm in a bit of a hurry, so can anyone say how much that'll be in $AUS?
Around the $750 - $850 mark. =/
-
This somewhat old (from 2003), but the PS3 will feature a sequel of EyeToy, with High-Definition capabilities something which the PS2 version don't have, here's the article from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeToy
I am not the kind of person who use or buy this kind of commercial add-ons, however as Nintendo likes to give so much publicity to their special unique features much more than specs...
-
It'll be interesting to see how much Sony's motion sensing thing will control compared to the Wii's. After all, it sounds like the Dual Shock Eleventybillion here senses tilt only while the Wiimote detects position relative to the screen, torque, depth, and the like. I don't imagine Sony's version to be exactly like the Wii's at all.
As for the tilt sensor replacing the Rumble feature... yeah. Rumble's only so useful in many games. Heck, I can think of only a few examples where it's really worth anything.
-
Unless the eyetoy is shipping with the unit itself, it's probably going to be as relevant as the SNES mouse or DDR pads or lightguns. Used in a very few select games, but by and large totally ignored.
That motion sensitivity thing looks awful to me. Not sensitive enough to actually control anything with precision, but sensitive enough that devs will try to use it anyway.
Anyway, it certainly doesn't seem to be packing anything there to spark my interest.
-
I was going to make an ironic comment about the PS-series history of ripping off Nintendo pads (right back to the PS1 SNES-with-2-more buttons), but I can't be arsed wading through a thread of continuous Deepblue slagging posts. I think when you start posting pics that effectively imply Spny/PS3 fans should commit suicide, then you are being a bit of an arse. And it's too early in my morning for that.
-

and exclusive Pro M$/Anti-Sony rhetoric, which apparently only YOU are allowed to post. :doubt:
Most technically minded people would rather spend the money on a PC, and/or laptop for the price they're going to pay for a PS3. The only problem here, is that a boatload of games that aren't available on the PC without difficult (and rather crappy) emulation for the PS2 right now, and the only way that these exclusive games are going to be played are through emulation. It's going to take a few years and hardware cycles to get to the point where PS3 games are playable on modern PC's. IF you want to play the Final Fantasy series, you're gonna have to suck it up and get the damn console, which in all reality, is a computer that does only one real notable thing: play games.
People who buy these 1K-5K computer systems do the same exact thing, but will drop 400 bucks on low-latency RAM without batting an eye. They'll buy two 10K RPM Raptor drives just cause they're fast, even though they have a limited storage capacity. They'll also buy the highest-quality motherboard ($200 and up) just because it has an 8-phase power system, and it's compatible with that low-latency RAM they purchased. The $200 X-Fi card cause it has a pro-gamers name on it, the videocard pair that costs more than the entire backbone of the system, etc etc etc. I really don't see what the problem is here, for a console that will cost $600 USD, when other people who build PC's specificially for gaming spend easily twice that amount for one purpose: Gaming. You don't build a machine like that for internet usage, writing reports, or playing Solitare.

Alot of flame wars has just poped up from Sony "stealing" Nintendo's design. And all it does is make me laugh, while it's plain to see this was probley added on to combat Nintendo's rapidly growing advantage, it wasn't stealing, infact it looks far different from the Big N's new inovation.
And secondly, if you think Nintendo didn't expect this, you are fooling yourself. It's gonna be very interesting to see what Nintendo puts on the table later today.
-
I hope the Nintendo conference starts with a video of a guy playing with a PS3 controller only to have his hands cut off by someone wielding a wii-wand.
-

Well, nintendo openly spoke about being worried someone would nick their design, that's why it was secret for so long. It just so happens that Sony didn't copy it so much as copy the Gameboy (the GBC or GBA - I forget which - had games whose carts included tilt-sensors). It's not IMO that bad an idea - I have involuntarily leaned playing racing games (which is odd, as I don't do it driving - except at one corner on the rally-esque bit on my drive home :D) - it's just mind-numbingly unoriginal and the fact it was only finalized a few weeks ago sparks of thievery. Plus i'm not sure I'd rather have it than rumbling (which was stripped from the pads because it screwed up the sensors - look for a doubly priced rumble-tilt pad in 2007, folks!)

Hmmm, that is interesting in itself, now that you brought it up, Nintendo did say something about someone copying their idea, but the question, was that worry or was that a dare.
-
Nintendo press conference is underway.
No price given, launch in 2006.
Montage of games, MP3, Mario Universe.
Two versions of Zelda, one for GC, and one for Wii (damn you dirty liar-face Reggie!)
Speaker in controller to enhance depth perception. (Can't this already be done with 5.1, or does Wii not support it?)
Red steel demo, technical difficulties, demo is rebooted.
Gameplay is like Black with Katana boss fights. The shotgun is now a "unique" weapon. Looks fun, graphics are on par with the Xbox or PS2 however.
On to the DS, 1.3 million WiFi users, etc.
-
http://eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=64374
(eurogamer live summarising)
I think the controller speaker also has a partial use for feedback akin to a rumble pad, so it's beyond 5.1.... plus I suspect 5.1 would be too dependent on exterior hardware, which would spoil the potential use of a controller speaker for that feedback. I was half-expecting a proper rumble type thing, but I guess that'd be infeasible for that style of controller.
Other skim highlights (not seen any video) - Starfox DS. Excellent. Here's hoping that's got MP; DS is the device of choice at my work. No DS lite european date - Gits. Tennis sounds rather ace (geddit?). No Wii time, either. GitsX2.

MS conference...
WIRELESS STEERING WHEEL, HEADSET, PC ADAPTOR!
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/706/706021p1.html
Warner Music Group partnership will mean exclusive music content, like Madonna, in Lumines Live.
11:55.30 -
Paperboy too. Midway, Namco and Konami shown up. Sonic's "heading up our partnership with my old friends at Sega". Shared heritage, he says.
11:55.10 -
"A major expansion". Logos - Dig-Dug, New Rally-X, Ms Pac-Man. "Doesn't stop there." The arcade portfolio of Konami.
11:54.25 -
New Live Arcade titles: Pac-Man, Contra, Frogger, Galaga, Sonic the Hedgehog, Defender, Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting, Time Pilot, Ultra Mortal Kombat 3, Scramble.
11:53.53 -
We're going beyond early adopters, he says. "We hit 57% attach" last week he says. And pays tribute to Live Arcade - "Strikes at the very core of what makes gaming fun." New additions trailer reel.
11:50.47 -
Demo ends. Applause. Peter Moore's on now. Five million sales of 360 by eight months, he says. Better than iPod, and other consoles.
11:46.32 -
We're outside. A chopper's above. "I see three!" The screen shakes as we run - the whole scene feels very oppressive. Very brown and grey with loads of rubble, tatty grass patches.
Fighting close up, chainsaw on underside of gun through enemy chest. Jack Thompson's going to love this.
Cliffy's playing it, by the way. He's down on the side looking quite intense.
11:44.47 -
Watching the cutter. "Get ready." Boom. They rush in, fanning out to different points, instructions shouted by your squad-mate. "Go left." Goes left, more close-zoom syrup-sploshing.
I feel like I'm commentating on a Bruckheimer horror film.
11:44.00 -
Chucking a grenade using a blue arc to gauge distance. More hanging bodies. The level of detail on the character model is fantastic. Oops, enemies cutting through door.
11:43.29 -
Leaps over block, shoots shotgun round corner. Bit of pausing now and then but generally very smooth. Very fierce, heavy metal gunplay.
11:42.55 -
Over the shoulder look as the two chars try to break out of military prison. Nice crash zoom on dead bodies as they kick down a door. The level of detail is amazing, with a huge rocket hitting a tower that tumbles down.
Fighting in the rubble, ducking out into a close over-shoulder views to take out enemies up on balconies. Blood gushing like syrup from wounds. Swapping between four weapons, close-combat evisceration.
11:42.27 -
(That's Cliff Bleszinsky from Epic Games, by the way. He's the designer on Gears of War, a third person action title. That's what we're looking at now.)
11:41.10 -
It's CliffyB. "Don't act surprised to see me, you knew this was going to happen." We're going to see the first level.
11:40.40 -
It looks gorgeous. Incredible lighting as muzzle flare lights up street battles. Emergence Day 2006. Trailer ends.
11:40.22 -
We're off. Gears of War trailer. CG of Emergence Day, when the streets said hello to giant killy things. "Billions dead." "Humans denied their enemy control by destroying their own civilisation."
11:39.27 -
"Ladies and gentleman, please take your seats, the show is about to begin." Lights go down.
11:35.00 -
They're still filtering in but it's pretty much full now. Should get going soon.
11:34.17 -
I've now seen Rob's gamertag seven times. And Cochise is playing. It's just like England this.
11:28.58 -
Rob's appeared again. It's quite hypnotic. The display that is. Rob's not hypnotic.
Maybe the water's a kind of Temple of Doom plot device. You will write nice things about Xbox and I give you the antidote.
11:28.45 -
Gamertags and scores are scrolling around the screen in 3d. Rob Fahey's just scrolled past. "Recreation". Wuss.
[Remind me to tell you all about the way Tom grenades his own teammates in the chest in Counter-Strike sometime. - Rob]
11:28.13 -
We are live inside Grauman's Chinese, next door to Kodak Theatre where Nintendo just were. MS wins friends early by providing bottled water with every seat. Gulp.
It's filling up nicely, with 360s visible in display cases on the left side of the open area at the front. Due to begin in about five minutes, they say.
-
"Surprise addition to Xbox Live Arcade: Lumines Live. "Today I'm proud to announce a partnership with Warner Music Group to integrate [music] content into Lumines Live. " In other words, you'll be able to play music videos in the background as you play Lumines Live. The demo showed a Madonna vid playing in the background."
Nice....
-
""Your story is waiting." A scary looking Burton-esque world, morphing around a weird tree lady. "Choose your fortune."
Fable 2."
-
12:06.29 -
Cripes, that looks nice. Cars zooming backward round the track, peeling off down to bare lines. A nice attract sequence. Going forward now, splitting into component car parts in mid-air. It's a bit like a McG Honda advert.
12:05.32 -
"I'd like to show you another quality title produced by MS Game Studios." "We're shifting this into fifth gear." Forza Motorsport 2.
HELL YEAH!
"Now you can choose from over 300 cars" to tune and paint. Up to 11 other players played against on Live. Available this Christmas."
:D
Sorry Ghostavo:
Steering wheel - Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel. Force feedback (!!!). People clap. New wireless headset too - looks like a Bluetooth headphone. Xbox Live Vision Camera too.
12:11.03 -
Little stylised man super-deforms his way through the sky in a spaceship, as a big stompy tin-can robot and his minions cross the ground. It's very anime.
Flying towards robot-git. Blue Dragon. That's Mistwalker (as in Sakaguchi's lot) and Artoon (as in the Blinx chaps) developed, of course.
12:10.09 -
Moore welcomes Sakaguchi to Los Angeles, says Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are going to be, well, good you know. Video now.
12:09.34 -
"Look your opponents in the eye in Activision's World Series of Poker." All three peripherals due this holiday season.
He's turning to Japan now. "We're committed to bringing inspired, imaginative content to the Japanese market." Gestures to Final Fantasy creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi.
-
Y'know, if you are linking to a live feed, you don't actually need to cut and paste the content off the live feed into the topic.
-
He's taking his, er, clothes off. Well, jacket. "Yeah yeah yeah" he syas. He shows his Halo 2 tattoo. "You thought it was fake." Oh god. It's not on his chest, surely.
"Some guys do rubber ducks, some guys do tattoos," he jokes. His new one: Grand Theft Auto IV.
Okay, wasn't Halo then. Forgive me eh? But hell. October 16th 2007 in North America, October 19th 2007 Europe. GTAIV. "The first date it's available."
MEGATON.
-
Showing off Crysis now...
Shadowrun announced for PC and X360, cross-platform play. Possibly a MMORPG/FPS?
"So what's the most dramatic thing we could do to take Live to the next level? " Connect users. Consider that there are 230 miilion Windows gamers and 1 billion game ready cellphones." Announces Live Anywhere, will be built into the Windows Vista.
One ring to rule them all.
-
What the... where did my reply go?
Deepblue, I apreciate your efforts to show what's going on in E3 but try to... post less and edit more.
-
Deepblue, would you please care to calm down. You're not posting anything useful with those "live feed quotes", just post a link to the feed and be done with it. I know you enthusiastic about E3 and there's nothing wrong about that, but calm down already and be more rational. This goes for rest of you as well.
-
Sorry, I did the same thing for the other conferences, but they didn't have so much!
-
GTA4 is a huge coup for MS (I'm guessing limited period exclusivity, which had been rumoured but is still a surprise). Skimming through the rest, nothing too surprising (I think all the titles were more or less certs to be announced), although I had semi-expected Alan Wake to be a 360 exclusive rather than Pc+360; I wonder how many games will go the same way? From the sounds of it MS have had the best of the pre-E3 conferences in terms of actual game content, though. Of course, how much each game appeals to you is a subjective thing I guess; I'm kind of blase about gaming at the moment - believe it or not, the most exciting thing out justnow for me is Animal Crossing.
Yes, I know. Pathetic, isn't it?
:D
EDIt;
This is reportedly the first shot of Wii controller 'shell'; http://www.wiigamer.com/?p=504
Not sure about it, myself - assuming it's real of course - seems like how comfortable and hence good it is will be determined by the underside, namely how easy it is to hold. Like anyone would have a Wii (hoho!) for standard controller-type games, of course....
-
Sorry, I did the same thing for the other conferences, but they didn't have so much!
:(
Because that is the reason, isn't it?
:(:(:(:(:(:(
-
Aldo, that controller (if it's real anyway) is probably for publishers like EA that put out games on all three systems, to have a kind of 'standard' control scheme for the games.

Well yeah, but don't forget it is also a SNES/N64/GC emulator, and the remote is only really useful as a NES controller.

Sony's conference was mostly talk talk talk and a ton of time on a couple games. Then a trailer reel. And finally, a poor attempt at stealing Nintendo's thunder.
Nintendo's conference was pretty good from what I saw, however, I neglected adding to this one because I lost the video feed.
MS's conference had a crapload of stuff from the very beginning.
1. Gears of War trailer, demo of first, gory, level.
2. A bunch of new Live Arcade titles.
3. New hardware (wireless headset, camera, wireless wheel with force feedback).
4. Fable 2.
5. Forza 2.
6. Alan Wake previously slated for both X360 and PS3 picked off by MS.
7. Blue Dragon/Lost Odyssey.
8. GTIV.
9. HD-DVD drive.
10. Live Anywhere (this is REALLY big).
11. Crysis.
12. XBL marketplace flood of demos and trailers.
13. And then ending the conference with Halo 3. This had the loudest response from the audience of anything at any conference.
MS definitely had the most to show, and I think they won the preconference battle because of PS3's poor show and Nintendo's lack of a price and specific date.
-
Pathetic.

I thought it was becuase of them having their console out over 1/2 a year allready, but silly me. :p
Anyways, this is alot of games.

GTA4 confirmed to release simultaneously on X360 and PS3 by...er... MS
http://eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=64487 (lots of Wii popping up there now; you'll see the same for X360 later I'd imagine, they evidendly have to whittle through PR guff handled at the presentations for each format)
I'm confused, now...
-
I was going to make an ironic comment about the PS-series history of ripping off Nintendo pads (right back to the PS1 SNES-with-2-more buttons), but I can't be arsed wading through a thread of continuous Deepblue slagging posts. I think when you start posting pics that effectively imply Spny/PS3 fans should commit suicide, then you are being a bit of an arse. And it's too early in my morning for that.
That'd be because the PS1 was initially meant to be an SNES add-on.
-
In all honesty, after watching all three press briefs, I think that Nintendo had the best one. Why? Because we have seen all the crap on the PS3 and 360 dozens and dozens and dozens of times before. Yes, MGS4, Halo 3, GT4, Gears of War, Mass Effect, FF13, and all the dozens of other games by them look nice, good for them. I, for one, am getting kinda tired about the best pixels per inch, and soft shadows and all that other technobabble **** that Sony and MS are spewing. After all, good graphics do not make a good game.
But Nintendo had something those didn't... I don't quite know what, maybe it was heart, maybe it was balls, maybe it was insanity. I don't know, but the Wii looks to truly be next gen. Not only in terms of control, but terms of art. Now, art and graphics are two different things. The graphics, while they look nice, look stale and plastic. What Nintendo can do here with the Wii, since the technology there isn't too far off from the current gen, is push the art of the games further than ever before. I have watched the thrity-odd second Mario Galaxy playdemo over and over and over now, because I still can't get over the art direction there. It looks friggin great!

I'am impressed, that was the SNES CD, however Nintendo break with Sony because the contract said that Nintendo would have to give Sony 25% of the profits they make from it, furious Nintendo break with Sony and go with Philips to search for a CD support, resulting in the Philips CDi, and Sony developement for making his own platform, of course Nintendo do a pathetic legal attemp to stop the PlayStation...but they were too late, they should have accepted that contract...(that was the worst mistake in Nintendo's history, though it is know by a few users...)
-
The Wii looks ridiculously fun. I'm quite excited to try it myself someday. :) The graphics could look a little better IMHO, but maybe it's just the poor quality of the video I watched? *shrugs* Either way, it looks amazingly entertaining!
-
It's definitely not the quality of the vid you watched. While some titles looked outstanding (Mario, Disaster), others looked like Xbox quality (Red Steel, MP:C ( :( )), and yet others looked, I kid you not, worse than N64 (TONY HAWK: DOWNHILL JAM, I'M LOOKING AT YOU).
-
If you care about graphics, to be honest, then it's not the console for you anyways. I'm glad someone put fun as a desired characteristic for their console, rather than spec-mapped, normal-mapped, 2000 poly giant crotchguards or realistic facial pockhole lighting.
NB: Fable 2 and Forza 2 were pre-rendered according to C4 (Digitiser).
Pathetic.
Y'know the bias accusation? It can cut both ways.
EDIT; wii videos

I think they look rather ace, myself.

Even the basic sports games or music games that use the Wii-mote look fun, let alone Red Steel, Zelda, Mario, or Metroid.. I'm so stoaked, I can't wait to get my hands on this!

What I think is funny, is if you watch the conference, they admit they still have alot behind closed doors, I wonder what they will pull today.

What will they pull for Wii, indeed.

Well, they pulled one huge one.Even tho the Halo trailer is nice, this from a fun point of view blows it out of the water. :D

I think the SSB trailer was / is rendered, though. Scarcely alone in that (although it's the only Nintendo one that was AFAIK) respect, of course.
EDIT; supposedly was, anyways. Not sure about screenshots - they would seem legit - I've yet to see the trailer itself, though. The term used was 'computer generated', which might not necessarily imply pre-rendered.

It's really hard to say, some is questionable, other parts I'm nearly positive is game footage.
But, still that they included Snake, who else will they add.
*hopes they add Ridley :D

I'm ashamed to admit I never managed to play the Smash Bros games, but I intend to make up for that (DS version please?).
How about a Goomba? Or Pikmin? sonic? (given the availability of some Megadrive games for the virtual console bit). Toad? Metal Mario?
Or how about a bloody great comedy Mech, just to throw people off? :D
-
They've seemed pretty set on sticking to strictly Nintendo characters up until this point it seems. Always nice to see some new faces. And yes, these look very, very fun!
-
I wasted untold hours in 1999 playing SSB for the 64. Still play it on rare occassions that I can get enough people to play it.
BTW, Snake is the guy from the Metal Gear Solid games, right?
-
I believe so.
Zero Suit Samus FTW!

Yeah. Apparently Hideo Kojima (the creator of MGS) wanted - asked for - him to be put in the GC version but was too late. so it's in this one.

I just can't take Snake seriously after he's been put in a SSB game...
-
I like how they morph into their new models for the Wii, and Kirby looks exactly the same. I got a kick outta it.
-
Another interesting thought, since Snake is in and since Ubi Soft is on board with Nintendo, are we gonna see everyone's favorite Splinter Cell, allthough it wasn't started on nintendo from my knowledge? Pretty interesting, Snake vs Sam, until Samus kicks their butts of couse. :p

I'm pretty sure Splinter Cell has been on both the Gamecube and DS.
EDIT; whoops. Can I have the other end of the stick? Taa muchly.
I doubt it myself.... 2 black-clad secrety people would be too generic, plus it's worth noting Kojima asked them to put in Snake rather than the other way round.

Set in a science-fiction war zone, Warhawk is the first game to make public use of Sony's own kinetic controller, which mimics the Wii device. Unfortunately for Sony, the admission by one of the Warhawk developers that his team got its hands on the new controller less than two weeks ago reinforced the impression that Sony only added motion-sensitive technology at the last minute in a hasty attempt to match Nintendo.
Wow, no duh. :p

Damn, this just ain't Sony's week. M$ siding with Big-N, intense flak over the high pricing, this debacle, what else could go wrong?
-
The funny thing is, if you are gonna try to mimic somebody's stuff, you are suposed to go one step higher than them, making the tech better. Not throwing in a half baked thing at the last moment that really doesn't compare to it. And that is what Sony should take the flak about, out do the comp, not just stuff something in to say we have this ability too.
-
You know, if for no other reason, Snake in SSB would be soul destroying because he could...and probably at some point will...get beaten up by Pikachu.

If Microsoft would only know that from the start we wouldn't have suffered so much with Windows...(specially that ME)
At Sony's E3 press conference, the PlayStation 3 controller was revealed to be a wireless version of the previous controller design, as opposed to the often maligned "boomerang" prototype wireless design that was previously showcased.
The PlayStation 3 controller features four numbered LED indicators at the top, presumably to identify and distinguish multiple connected wireless controllers. It also has a USB cable port at the top of the controller for charging the internal battery through USB.
In addition to the basic design, the other major feature revealed at the press conference was the ability to sense rotational and translational acceleration to allow for a full six degrees of freedom. The controller is lighter than prior DualShock controllers. Because of inclusion of the motion-sensing function, the rumble capability of the previous controllers was omitted, so as not to interfere with motion sensing.
Early commentaries have compared the motion-sensing capability of the PS3 controller to that of Nintendo's Wii controller. A key difference noted is the lack of a positional sensor for the PS3 controller, which has been speculated to indicate a more narrow and limited capability than that of the Wii controller. Despite this, the specifics of the motion-sensing technologies for both PS3 or Wii are still largely unknown, and any suppositions of the versatility and accuracy of either are still conjecture at this point. Nevertheless, Sony's inclusion of motion-sensing functionality in the PS3 was perceived to undermine a prime distinction of Nintendo's console, which has emphasized unique gameplay mechanics over the processing power and elaborate online infrastructures of its competitors.
Other, more minor refinements have also been made to the controller. The L2 and R2 shoulder buttons have evolved to triggers (similar to those found on the Xbox and Xbox 360 controllers), and are therefore slightly larger than on previous PlayStation controllers, for better control and finer analog sensitivity. The analog sticks also have finer analog sensitivity, at 10-bit accuracy, as compared to the 8-bit accuracy of the previous models.
-
You know, if for no other reason, Snake in SSB would be soul destroying because he could...and probably at some point will...get beaten up by Pikachu.
Getting beat up by Jigglypuff would be more embarassing.

I don't see much possibility of a DS version of SSB at all, considering the importance of analog control to the series. I cringe every time I hear someone suggest it would work. <_<
All I know is that it will be very interesting to see what other 3rd parties will make their way into this title (and other Ninty games as well). This trailer is just about all that exists of SSBB so far, meaning the slate is still very clean and will be able to incorperate any character desired, really.
-

EEH-AW!
Sony got sued by the owners of the rumble effect patent. Who then got bought up by Microsoft. Ergo, no rumble.
I did read that Warhawk was quite intuitive to play, though. It's not a stunning looking game, albeit; generic shooty-ness.
-
Meh, Jigglypuff has a move where it falls asleep in SSB:Melee and it's basically an insta-kill. My roommate got it down to an art, pissing off everyone he played. :p
And the PS3 controller doesn't have rumble feature with it's motion sensor, but the Wii remote does apparently. (sorry if this has already been stated)
-
It's always had that move. Still, it's a retarded character.

It's true, they have space left but they can't add the rumble feature due to legal issues with Immersion Corps.:
In 2002, Sony Computer Entertainment America, marketer of the popular PlayStation game consoles, was sued by Immersion Corp. of San Jose, California which claimed that Sony's PlayStation "Dual Shock" controllers infringed on Immersion's patents. In 2004, a federal jury agreed with Immersion, awarding the company US$82 million in damages. A U.S. district court judge ruled on the matter in March, 2005 and not only agreed with the federal jury's ruling but also added another US$8.7 million in damages. Washington Post: Pay Judgment Or Game Over, Sony Warned
-
NB: Immersion Corp are apparently one of those utter-**** companies who make/made money just by registering patents and then suing as appropriate. I'm not sure if they were bought up by Ms or just licensed to them, though, so I might need a bit of an EEh-AW myself on the latter fact.
EDIT:

Maybe I'll take apart a Gamecube controller and see if the design for rumble is similar (I've taken apart many a playstation controller).

MS and Nintendo payed the licensing fee, so they get to keep the rumble feature.

Are you sure? I have a feeling Nintendo could cite prior art and comfortably defend themselves in court.

From what I've heard, that's about as well as the actual conference went over. :p

Well, in the actual conference there were the highlights of Heavenly Sword and MGS4. But the conference was so damn long that it was hard to remember them by the end.

I liked Heavenly Sword and FFXIII, myself.

That video is hilarious.

Immersion Corporation of San Jose, California, is a leader in developing, licensing, and marketing digital touch technology and products.
Founded in 1993, Immersion's technology is deployed across automotive, entertainment, medical training, mobility, personal computing, and three-dimensional simulation markets. Immersion's patent portfolio includes over 500 issued or pending patents in the U.S. and other countries.
In 2002, Sony and Microsoft were sued by Immersion for patent infringement for the use of vibration functions in their gaming controllers. Immersion's lead attorney in this case was Morgan Chu. While Microsoft settled out of court, Sony continued to defend the case. Sony lost, and was required to pay considerable royalties to Immersion and suspend the sale of the controllers, including all PlayStation and PlayStation 2 console packages containing them. Sony appealed this decision and was able to sell its products while the appeal was being heard. On March 12, 2006 Sony lost the appeal. Later, at E3 2006, Sony announced they have removed the vibration feature from the PlayStation 3 controller.

Here is an article from Wikipedia: "History of video game consoles (seventh generation)" which compare the consoles in a very detailed way, of course game developers have a lot of impact over the rating of the console, so it's not that determinant...:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_video_game_consoles_%28seventh_generation%29#Comparison_of_consoles
Also includes handheld comparations over the Sony PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS Lite, Tiger Telematics (discontinued ?), the GP2X (GamePark 2X) and the upcoming GamePark XGP (awaited by a lot of people)
-
I'm inclined to argue that the controller's feature set is more determined by Immersion Corporation than Nintendo, and I also believe that Sony doesn't want to admit this. The very last-minute nature of Sony's moves do not lead me to believe that this has been planned for long. In fact, it seems like it was a surprise to nearly everyone. The question, to me, is when did Sony decide to drop DualShock? I suspect the decision was made in the aftermath of Sony's recent loss in court to Imersion, roughly two months ago. The two companies are locked in a "to the death!" battle, and acrimony is running high. Sony's original gamble, which consisted of fighting Immersion in court and laughing off licensing, looks to have failed miserably. Rather than grin and bear licensing for the PS3, Sony has decided to simply remove DualShock capabilities from the new console (at least for now). Are we really supposed to believe that the real reason "rumble" was left out was because it's passé?
-
Think of the money they could make* by releasing the Dualshock Tiltything 4 in 2007!

I finally finished watching the MS press conference all the way through. So I have to buy Windows Vista to play games "at their best" or some such thing? And for the first time my games will be accessable right from the start menu?!!?! OMGZ0R!
Hmmm...
-
Considering that DX10 will be available only for Vista, you kind of have to get it to play games that no longer support DX9. The first Vista games at least will support both but a year or two later that might not necessarily be the case. Well, Windows XP being 5 years old now it is about time to upgrade Windows anyway, or rather early next year unless they slip again...
-
Valid points. Now if only I weren't poor. :(
-
I assume DX10 will allow us to play games that require former DX, right?
-
If not, that'd be unbelievable.
Also, the compatibility of XBox360 games and Windows vista being able to play together on XBox live looks pretty cool.
-

I still don't think it is right to force us to upgrade to software that is full of DRM retardedness.........

Bloody hell, I have no wish to upgrade from 2000 to XP, let alone to some cpu-hogging monster of security holes and pain-in-the-arse wizards and whatnot. Hell, my work doesn't even officially support XP.

Extremely awesome. Just please get better cross-compatible games than Shadowruin. My god, FASA is full of idiots. They had a great IP and they ruin it with crappy graphics and counterstrike clone gameplay. It's not even in the "Shadowrun" universe. It's in bloody Brazil, and the art is nothing like the pen and paper game. I hope after this game bombs that FASA gets back to making Crimson Skies 2 or Mechwarrior.

Every piece of software you've ever used probably has security holes. It's just that no one cares about them.

Aye, but given MS' record, it's scarcely likely that the big-expensive-OS-upgrade will be justified by security, and if you don't want shiny UIs.....
-
They apparently sought out to fix most of the old security problems. Of course, that probably produced new security problems...

Nah, they might have just massively restricted what 3rd party programs could do......

The only feature that comes to mind is that programs won't automatically run with full administrative rights.

I believe they were talking about removing socket access, as an example. Lower level hardware stuff that'd break programs from, I'd expect, anyone not licensing low level APIs from MS.

Over twice the base unit price (going by the Argos website) of £210 (core is £280; I think the RRP must've been dropped then). It's scarcely a shock, though; the estimates for the PS3 price went up to £500 IIRc, although it's still a vast sum of money compared to my expectation. The PS3 and Sony as a company were always going to be tied to Blu-ray, though.
