Title: E3 announcements.

Seeing as we got a screenshot and press confrence thread, lets do one for new games, shall we?

ALMA RETURNS IN F.E.A.R.™ EXTRACTION POINT

LOS ANGELES, CA –May 5th, 2006 – Vivendi Games’ Sierra Entertainment today announced that the first expansion pack for the award-winning PC title F.E.A.R.™ (First Encounter Assault Recon), is currently in development and will be unveiled at the forthcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles.

F.E.A.R. is a paranormal action thriller presented entirely in first person, an unprecedented adrenaline rush of close quarters combat seamlessly melded with the spine-tingling, shocking intensity of the unknown.

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point kicks off where the original game ended – with a bang. The First Encounter Assault Recon Team (F.E.A.R.) returns to battle the now free Alma and her paranormal minions across a destroyed city. New locations, weaponry and enemies combine to take the F.E.A.R. franchise to new levels of action and suspense.

Developed by TimeGate Studios in conjunction with Monolith Productions, F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is an intense first person close-quarters combat experience that expands and continues the rich atmosphere and engaging, paranormal horror storyline first unleashed in F.E.A.R.

To get more information on F.E.A.R. please visit www.whatisfear.com.

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point is planned to ship for PC during Fall of 2006.

Is it really necessary to have THREE threads about E3? Just one thread would do fine.

Too late for that, anyone can make a thread for the Tokyo Game Show to balance the situation, but since the E3 is more popular from the other side of the pond...

We have 3 threads, one for each "E". :p

Okay, this one is for new games then. Mine is for the press conferences, and the other one has an obvious purpose.

No.

Diminishing Sony's products in favor of the Xbox.

It's a fragile balance.

To be honest I'd normally be more than willing to slag off some of the mistakes Sony have made with the PS3 (price, that stupid 2-system sales tactic, the half-baked motion sensors that are clearly in response to Nintendos' innovation, the inability to actually make a nicer new controller and just keeping the old one), but Deepblues' rantings make me want to defend them.   I kind of hate E3 for that; for the next week or so it'll be an endless shower of Xbox screenshots combined with snide wee comments at PS3 ones (see; screenshots thread).  And the sheer bias of it invariably goads me into annoyance and having a go, as we can see here already, because I hate bias.

Take a pill, mate. Honestly, there's as many anti-windows and anti-M$ threads on these boards - a number of which have been started by you - as DB's whoring or bemoaning, so it's not like he's launching an all out war in the name of the Digital Overlord. Moreover, your proclaimed loathing of bias is quite ironic, given your blatant bias against M$' business practices and PC products.

Grug is right, let's just get over the whole corporate shillery thing. It was funny a few months ago, but now it's just tiresome to see everyone pile on him whenever he says anything favourable towards M$, which I believe he is entitled to do... or have the board rules been changed while I was in the can?

I'll admit to the odd bit of bias, but i also try and present a devils advocate where I can.  Although i'm not sure why having a reasoned opinion constitutes bias; I've always tried to present my grounds for an opinion, and I think if you bother to check what bias is, I think you'd find a lot of my posts are more objective and reasoned than that.  I have certainly never came out and said 'that's ****' without giving a reason, nor have I ever suggested people of the opposing viewpoint commit suicide (metaphorically) or give up because of my particular set of reasoning, such as the post which pissed me off in the first place here;

Oh, look, it's a picture of a computer game character with a gun pointed into his mouth. HA HA!  Oh, how hilarious!  Why, it's the peak of human humouristic endeavour!  What satire!  what fun!  Oh, get me a doctor for my sides are splitting!  He....has...a...gun!  In his mouth!  Whoaff!  Save me from your hilarity!  Oh, I almost soiled myself in orgasmic delight!

and...and.....it references Sony fans!  Hwaha!  Killing....themselves!  BWAH HA HA HA.  Oh...oh, dear.  I think I need a sit down after that.  It's all too much, it really is.  gun...in..mouth.  Pfff....crikey.  Must get a glass of water.  Hoboy.

Sony-fans:*snip*

That's a valid point, but I think you're reading too far into DB's posts, which is due to bias towards DB! You've pegged him as an M$ Fanboi, and you always seem to be there to shout him down whenever he does anything that could be called fanboi-ish. Take that screenshot for example: if anyone else had posted it, it would  be light-hearted and we'd all have a laugh about the clever use of photoshop [I use the term "clever" rather loosely], but since DB posted it, it's suddenly an attack on Sony that should you decry as moronic and uncalled for. Correct me if i'm wrong, but that sorta holds a little bias right there, IMO.

Now, while I wasn't able to find you ever saying 'that's s***', I was able to find this extremely disturbing post that is equally as offensive and highlights your hypocrisy...

moo!

Shocking.

Actually that wasn't photoshopped. That was a screen-grab from the MGS4 trailer shown at the Sony conference. Snake puts a gun in his mouth, saying he must complete one final mission, and then you hear a bang.

sony are more than capable of force feeding their audiences with great big spoonfulls of BS.

anyway, what's at discussion here, is not whether a not a game has an old mulleted fart with a gun in his gob, or whether microsoft's heating system has better games than sony's new toaster, or whether or not your new nintendo just wii'd on the carpet, it's about the games quite frankly, and if somebody can show a screenshot without making a snide comment, or a failed attempt at humor, or references to how spectacular a game is and/or how crappy it'd be without any bias whatsoever, then it'd be a nice discussion.

Now, my assessment on things:
Sony:
they have some nice looking games coming out, nice looking, but i'd actually wait until they're actually released here, and i'm able to actually look at them before i personally decide whether they're bullshots or not. few final fantasy games, one MGS, misc shooters and whatnot, sounds like a reasonable first release schedule for the PS3. glad they got rid of the batarang, too.
note: MGS4 sounds to be the last of the series, and Raiden it seems has taken the cyborg ninja mantle from gray fox.

Nintendo:
Since they changed their console's name in a marketing masterstroke (free publicity is a wonderful thing), nintendo just go and do what they what they always have done, their own thing.. the wii remote's ability to sense motion, would bring a nice, active role to gaming, like swinging a sword, tennis raquet, or drawing a bowstring, just remember to hang onto the remote.

Microsoft:
the second big juggernaught of the console gaming world, it looks like they're gonna go all out, as per usual, with the 360's release titles less than spectacular (GRAW was great, but not earthshattering, IMO), gears of war, and other little tidbits, and even though it's denied to even exist, i'm holding reservations on "halo 3" it might suck, yet it might not, the proof is in the play, naturally.

PC:
now, the big winner is of course all the PC titles that've been announced, supreme commander, Dark crusade, the new FEAR, just to name a few, this end is worth getting giggly over, IMO, because, it's the PC, and it has something for everyone (who can afford the gear to run modern games), the question being, will they all shape up to expectations?

one thing that i've learnt, screenshots are all good and fine, but in order to grab an informed opinion on a game, you haveta sit down and actually play the damn thing, eyecandy maketh not the game, there's been quite a few "pretty" games that have failed to meet expectations when it comes to the gaming.

I can't really comment at the mo because it's too early, but the PS3 to me doesn't have that impressive a lineup.  Like the X360 when it launched, there's not really anything I'd buy one to play.

I would expect MS to announce/preview Halo3 at E3, though, to try and deflate Sony as much as possible.  Although AFAIK Bungie were supposed to be working on a different IP, which would raise some...questions about the whole scenario.  I'm looking forward to the Nintendo briefing tonight, though, in the hope of getting an actual euro release date for the DS Lite.

"New Super Mario Bros" looks pretty fun, and I hear it's really well done. I'm really looking forward to Starfox DS and possibly Kirby DS as well. Can't go wrong with Yoshi's Island. Super Mario Hoops looked fun, and I'm sure it'll do a fantastic job of taking advantage of the DS's online play through Nintendo WiFi. Not sure about Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, although it would appear to have an A Link to the Past feel to it, which interests me. These, and the brain games, hopefully a new innovative Tetris someday soon..
I never thought I'd bother with a handheld again, but looks like I was wrong.  :yes2:

Bugger that, buy and send me one!  :D

I've heard end of July / start of August suggested, to coincide with the new Mario games' release.  Although I guess that depends on the demand levels elsewhere; I've no doubt we'd have seen it sooner in the US / Oz were it not for the astonishing levels of demand in Japan.

First thing I've heard from E3 to even get remote interest from me. I miss the old style beat/slash-em-ups. The whole genre descended into Street Fighter/MK/Tekken style 1 on 1 combat and apart from Gauntlet Legends never appeared to have the slightest interest in coming back out again.

Fact that it's console only relegates this back to the only slightly interested pile. Unless this starts off a whole new trend of "proper" beat-em-ups I'm not interested.

I don't know if anyone here would even care about it, but I've just heard that Uru Live (http://www.urulive.com/blog/) is going to be revived through GameTap (http://www.gametap.com).  Great news for Cyan, and for all the fans; for the past four years, they've not only kept the game alive through fan-run servers, but they've also managed to create a vibrant, and even alive, online world.  For anyone who hasn't heard of Uru, it's like nothing else out there; it's almost an MMO-adventure game set in the Myst universe.  I haven't gotten involved with it myself up until now, but hearing this news really makes the $10 per month seem worth it. :)

Spong (http://news.spong.com//detail/news.jsp?prid=10052&snapBack=t) (so take this with a grain of salt) have a number of rumours on the Wii pricing justnow;
$250 launch price (bit more than expected, maybe, but still by far the cheapest; I guess this would imply a UK price in the region of £200?) - there's a school of thought that Nintendo didn't release the price at E3 to wait and see what the other 2 were doing.
VC games; a few $ NES, $5 SNES, $10N64 (I think I might grudge rebuying games I owned before, but it's not too bad considering the price of budget console games - I think Yoshis Island would be worth £2.65 - hopefully UK prices would retain the $ cost so we can take advantage of the strong exchange rate)

Anyone glancing through games sites will notice that Ken Kuturagi has been saying that the PS3 is really too cheap because it's Blu-ray. Yep.  Say no more.

An aside is that DS + Wii connectivity is confirmed.  Provided they don't do something completely and utterly pointless and stupid like use it for a rear mirror in driving games (yes, I'm looking at you Sony), this could be the dogs' danglies.

As another aside; apparently the queue (there's a video of the opening-time stampede doing the rounds) for the Nintendo stand at E3 (where they had the playable Wii of course), utterly dwarfed the Xbox360 / PS3 queues and was purportedly something of a record.  Which shows, at the very least, Nintendos' strategy is grabbing a lot of attention.

(EDIT; yes, there was a gigantic queue for a Wii.  Groan)

I'm still trying to find any sort of rumour for the UK DS Lite release date, which is how I stumbled onto the bunch of crap at the top of the post.  What's wierd is that I've been posting almost entirely about Nintendo, and it's really down to no other thing at E3 grabbing my attention in as much a way.  Perhaps because Ninty had a proper-big-blackout on news, perhaps because it's genuinely the most original thing that's been done in gaming in, ooh, a decade?  What's also interesting is that a year, maybe even as close as 6 months ago, I thought the PS3 was the most interesting thing on the horizon, and now I think it's in deep doo-doo.

I think anyone who watched that vid did that. :D

But, on another subject,

Quote
Which system's games most impressed you at E3 this year?

DS   2.27%      1446
PC   2.46%      1568
PlayStation 3   26.84%      17079
PSP   0.97%      616
Wii   57.05%      36300
Xbox 360   10.41%      6623
TOTAL VOTES   63632

This off of Gamefaqs, while most of time polls mean nothing, it is interesting to see the Big N win by such a landslide, when was the last time you seen that? But, still I feel Microsoft had the second best showing. With Sony in third.

But, they are really on to something, whether or not Nintendo outsells the other two, the standard has been set, I really do think they have created a Revolution in gaming.

For the time being.

Right.  Cos that was really quite confusing... surely it'd be more of a kick in the crotch if they dropped the price than, er, not changed it atall and just had another wee jibe?

Incidentally, am I the only one getting increasingly sick of console manufacturers slagging each other off like 12 year olds?  I mean, honestly, focus on your own product if it's that good - we all know you have a vested interest, so why in hell should we even listen to your opinion?  Sell your own stuff - otherwise, just **** right off.  Hrmph.

No, I don't think you got it. Peter Moor considers Sony pricing the PS3 a virtual pricedrop for the 360.

So, it's not a price drop.  Pure and simple.

"Are you dropping the price?"
"no"

See - easy.  I ****ing hate this corporate doublespeak.  Honestly, I'm just waiting for J.Allard to run up, kick Kuturagi in the crotch, and run away going 'nyahahaha'.

Which would, admittedly, be more interesting than 90% of what's at E3 anyways.
