Title: Warcraft Movie on the way
Post by: aldo_14 on May 09, 2006, 07:23:35 am
http://eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=64459

Presumably the first half hour will involve the hero running about fighting baby rats.

Aw, ****.

They shoulda done it intro-movie style, not live-action....

I totally agree. Blizzard is more than apt at coming up with enthrawlling stories, and their art-style is awesome. A fully CG movie in the style of what they've done in WCIII and the WoW intro would have been ace.

However, they can make up for not doing this by making ganking an intergral part of the storyline...

blizz are more than capable of making a CG movie, why they decided to go live action, is beyond me.

Well, at least Mr. Boll doesn't have his hands on it yet...

...does he?

Hmm, this hold some potential. But I was always hoping for a WCIII-style CGI movie :(

Every video game -> movie crossover with the exception of Silent Hill (and ... maybe ... Mortal Kombat ( which was entertaining in it's own entertainingly **** way)) has been a complete disaster. So how come movie studios have suddenly gotten the impression that you can turn absolutely any game into a movie? Between this and Sailor Moon I'm amazed. I even checked the date so see if somehow I'd lost 11 months and rolled back to April 1.

How about a Hero Quest movie, or a Talisman movie?

No...

Not with the exception of Silent Hill.

Just.... no.

And I don't understand why everyone wants this to be CG. I would rather it had the feeling of being brought to life, as opposed to being a full-length game cutscene.

Nah. I'd prefer something more like...

Lemmings: The Movie

"The tale of a couragous group of Lemmings striving to overcome adversity, brave the odds, and do their darndest to kill themselves."

They did it live action because CGI movies don't do well unless they're Disney kids movies and often, even then they don't do well. Look at the financial fiasco of Final Fantasy !

They should make a Peasant's Quest movie.

 I bet they tricked a lot people to see it by using the same title for the movie as they do for games, while the movie was 100% unrelated to games...it was just a big-budget intented movie. Square Pictures was almost ruined, but it was enough to make the Final Flight of the Osiris (a part of the animated Matrix)

However it may be different, as much as I can remember Warcraft has novels (something which FF don't have, unless I am mistaken), that should mean dense plot as the game shows, specially suspense...

Of course, every single Final Fantasy game is completely unrelated, with the exceptions of the FFVII spinoffs, FFX and FFX-2, and FFT/FFXII.

and FFXIII series which are composed of various games...I was aware that the movie would has nothing to do with the games as the games has nothing to do with them, except that Square made them, but a lot of people, resulting in the bankrupt of Square Pictures...

I wonder if something like this could happen to Warcraft ?. Will Blizzard be in charge of the movie ?, or will they just give the license and say "Go ahead, you have permission to hurt us really bad..."

---------------------------------------------

Here is the article about the novels:

Quote
Besides the aforementioned MMORPG World of Warcraft, there exists the following spin-offs:

* A set of three books (simply titled Warcraft), related only by their placement in the Warcraft Universe
  - Warcraft: Day of the Dragon, Richard Knaak
  - Warcraft: Lord of the Clans, Christie Golden (This book was used for the story of Warcraft Adventures)
  - Warcraft: The Last Guardian, Jeff Grubb

* A trilogy of novels, Warcraft: War of the Ancients, Richard Knaak
  1) The Well of Eternity
  2) The Demon Soul
  3) The Sundering

* A new upcoming trilogy of novels, Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy, Richard Knaak (with illustrations by manhwa artist Jae Hwan Kim)

So, about what will be the movie, there are lot of place to take plot and story, I hope it is from the game, but maybe they want to ruin themselves like Square do with Final Fantasy Movie...

While I'm usually the one to make this point myself, I have to admit that they're not completely unrelated. There are certain commonalities of world (Chocobos) and they all have Wedge and Biggs. There are a lot of Cids about too, though that's not 100%.

/me waits on the release of Intial Reality.

You should point the oldest and most obvious in FF, the summons, specially the legendary Bahamut...(it's there since FF1). In FF Movie there weren't any Chocobo or any Wedge or Biggs cameos, or even a reference (except from names such as the Gaia and a few others).

People would just be pissed enough to go berserker if they would know that a movie with the name of Warcraft is being made by Blizzard, and then at time of seeing the movie they say "I now understand the plot, is about on how to rip the consumer"

On an unrelated note, pirates no longer pirate movies, they now create 'instances'.  Film at 11.

There was a Cid, or as they spelled it, Sid, though.

I hope the studio can make the movie work, Warcraft world is pretty difficult to "bring alive" as it requires lots of CGI. But considering we already have movies like FF: Advent Children and LotR, perhaps all the CGI will look "alive". It is very understandable that Blizzard won't be making this movie by themselves with full CGI, I don't think they have the resources to produce and publish a full lenght movie. It would've been a financial disaster to Blizzard to make a full lenght CGI movie by themselves. Can't wait to see night-elf hotties on the big screen. :pimp:

In FF Movie Chocobos can be seen in two different spots. Once on a man's briefcase and another time on Aki's pajamas. Yes, there are a few cameos (that a few people notice), but it's not like people said "Oh yeah, a guy named Cid like in FF7 is there, I am going to see that movie", Square Pictures looses about U$s 100 Million, it is useless, SquareSoft is famous not only for FF, they have some other series, if they wanted an alternate universe they could have choose a different a name...

-------------------------------------------------------

I hope Warcraft movie goes about more than orcs and humans and other races fightning because they feel hate for some unknown reason, the Warcraft III storyline goes well, though it is unfinished...

These pics are from FFVIII (1999), they remember me to some of Warcraft III in-game models:

If they said it was a full length CGI movie in the style of the cinematics, I wouldn't be worried.

However a live action move...

Let's see it'll be some generic adventure with a pretty much all human cast (oh a Dwarf too!).

As opposed to something that could have been original like say a group of Argent Dawn people hunting down Arthas... and losing? ;)

You mean Dungeon & Dragons Movie (2000) or the computer animated motion picture entitled Scourge of Worlds: A Dungeons & Dragons Adventure (2003) ?

The D&D movie is probably the finest proof that the quality of the source material is absolutely no indication of the quality of the final movie. D&D has over 20 years worth of source material on which to base a movie and yet them managed to come out with a storyline so poor that most people who play the game could have beaten it.

It's one of those major conundrums as to why in the hell Jeremy Irons took that job. Seriously, he rocks almost as hard as Sean Bean, but there he was hamming it up with the rest of those no-talent hacks.

Why does everyone hate on Spirits Within so much? The name aside I think it's an absolutely brilliant film. The story was great, the action scenes were second to none and the ending makes me cry sometimes. T_T

Note: I hate the FF franchise but that's another story.

Yes, if only he would follow his aforementioned counterpart's example and star in such artistic triumphs as National Treasure, The Island, and Silent Hill.

National Treasure and Silent Hill... well, you've got me there. But hey, The Island wasn't too bad, definitely one of the better action-movies of the year. Considering it was directed by Michael Bay, it could have been a lot worse.

If Blizz made a CGI movie, their devs wouldn't have enough time to buff Shaman every patch.

A few better than average setpieces in an uninspired, corny, half-baked sci-fi story, do not a good film make.

Regarding Warcraft, I think, if they try to make a generic adventure out of it, that it will fail miserably. We've had LotR already, and I doubt that people want to see a rehash of it. No, the fanbase for the universe is huge worldwide, which is why they can probably afford to make a film around the events in the games. Perhaps some of the less documented events like the Night Elves' war against Sargeras or something.
