Title: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: tobiwan81 on May 10, 2006, 01:59:53 am
Well not a complete crash. IT just has some funny debugging errors and mentions alot of ship names...all of FS2 only ships. (Like Myrmidon etc)

Can you provide a little more detail?

Post the actual error. It might not mean much to you but it will probably lead a coder right to the source of the problem.

Sorry I know.
FS2 on home computer with no internet access. (welcome to Africa)

Internet access at work.

I'll copy and paste it to notepad and put it on memory stick or something.

It says it cant' find something and then the successive errors give you the names of ships.

GTF Myrmidon, GTF Herculies II and so one and so forth.

I'll post the error tomorrow.

He has shivan's torrent obviously, so any problem he has is a problem with Shivan's torrent.

why the hell would the exact same game he has have anything to do with it? It's the same FS2, it's freaking retail with SCP included.
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: neoterran on May 10, 2006, 01:43:07 pm
obviously you didn't try to use Shivan's first torrent attempt or you wouldn't ask that question.

is it a coincidence a suprising number of newbies coming in have problems with the torrent builds ? hmmm... coincidence or fact.

To thread starter : post screenshots of the main freespace directory and of the freespace port directory.

ShivanSPS's first attempt made several mistakes in how it was put together (SCP Table files in \Data etc).

He seems to have sorted most of those out since then. Till we know what this error is it's probably best to not comment on what the cause actually is yet.

i bought my copy of Freespace 2 in 2001, so I never needed to use the torrent.

forget shivans setup, to make things easier, either download HOTU or the stuff off of my site. My site has the FULL retail version. NOT a ripped version. at my site you download each of the cd files and burn them to disc. If you would like to get the files off of my site, due to bandwidth problems, i will only share it via PM here on the Hard-Light forums (because of how much traffic hard light gets). Karajorma also has a exelent troubleshooting guide for those who are having problems with HOTU or the full retail version that you can get off of my site.

A full version is the same as a ripped version. A ripped version is the full game saved to your HD. The only thing that's lost is hard drive space. after you download shivan's FS2 torrent just burn the files to your cds. so it's basically the same process as your way, hunter, only with more files than what you have to offer. :p

^^ Okay derailing the thread who cares.

We can't really help the first poster until they write back with some more information about their setup and the exact errors.

No cobra, a ripped version is one that has been modified to be distributed like you said in your first sentence.. and stop trying to bash my post, your always getting technical on my posts and im getting tired of it, also, a ripped version DOES NOT have more things included, infact it has less hence my version being called the FULL version...

I don't think getting your version or HotU is really the solution here though. Unless ShivanSPS has really stuffed up the 1.5 pack there is precious little difference between what ends up on your HD whether you install from 3 disks or HotU then upgrade or start with his pack.

Its Karjorma fault :P the problem is the CVS... and the new loadout system (i think).

Here is a post in FS port forum who show you to fix this...
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39653.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39653.0.html)

You need to select your pilot, and ignore all errors, them go back to FS, go to campaing room, and finally select the FS1 campaing (Main freespace campaing).

Post by: neoterran on May 10, 2006, 05:30:54 pm
Hopefully this thread will let us find out if he has or not, since post of the people running the SCP have completely working setups and no one has actually downloaded the torrent to check if it works. I know the 1.0 did NOT work right, it was my introduction to Freespace SCP.

So it was YOU karajorma !!! how could you !  ;)
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: ShivanSpS on May 10, 2006, 05:38:14 pm
I have no idea of why the karjorma CVS try to load mission ships before you even go to the ready room :P
So if you have the FS_port mod selected, and go inside the game, no matter if you use a existeng pilot or a new one, the FS2 campaing is selected by default, and the CVS check the ships of the mission 1 of FS2 in FS_port, that is why all errors...

You used the 25th May CVS +  build? That probably would explain the problem. I replaced that build 4 days later when I was notified of a problem with it.

What happened is that I replace the ship parsing code for missions as part of my team loadout changes. The new code is much more stringent about catching errors in the mission file and does a better job of telling you where the error is. The problem came when I decided to change the campaign parsing code to use the same function. The code will work perfectly until you change mods. At that point it will parse the table files and then attempt to find the campaign file. At this point it finds a bunch of ships in the FS2 campaign file which aren't in the tables for the mod you're using and promptly complains about them. Since I never tried changing campaigns I never spotted this particular problem.

All I did was remove the more stringent error reporting while keeping the improved parsing routine and posted that in the April 29th build.

It's easy to spot when this build is the problem. It's the only one that will throw up this particular error

Quote
Error: Invalid ship type "GTF Myrmidon" found in $Ship Choices: of campaign file

Of course I'm now left with the irony of having spent hours advising ShivanSPS how to avoid big problems with his torrent only to go and cause a rather big one myself
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: neoterran on May 10, 2006, 06:19:39 pm
my advice to ShivanSps : let the torrent die, do a new version 1.6 of the torrent with a recent build that works well. It's important, we get a LOT of new people who remember the original freespace, have no idea about the SCP, and go search on their favorite filesharing engine for the original and are exposed that way. That's why you guys have me  :doubt:

I've got to agree really. That bug is a real showstopper in that the only way to get around it is hideously arcane and won't come to most people immediately.

I've heard no complaints about the 29th April build or you can try my latest one which doesn't contain any of the loadout code at all (beyond a couple of non-working boxes in FRED).

Great, another 4 days quiout internet... and another 70 attempts to make a .rar working...

Damn, i should noticed this :(, I tested the CVS in all mods, but I have a pilot for every mod and those pilots already have the corresponding campaing selected :(...

What about a .exe updater?

its not sense to give another big file which the same VPs... and the deltas... well... their have a lot of problems...

Yep. That one is definitely my fault. This (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39531.0.html) exe solves the problem. Download, unrar and select it from the launcher and you'll be good to go.

What about a .exe updater?

Hopefully Taylor's new launcher/mod downloader will be able to do that but until it's ready we're stuck with the current system.

ok, I will replace the torrent for the 1.6... thats easy... and ADD and updater from 1.5c to 1.6 for the direct download... (the people who downloaded frm direct download has to read the post anyway).

My idea from now on, is to give a new pack only when the new stable Vps be avalibe...

Shivan, please wait until this weekends builds to do this... environment mapping will be enabled in builds after this weekend which is a major feature and will be worth getting in the torrent.

That need to be checked for crash first... well I will give the patch anyway... I will wait to se what the new build has to offer for the torrent later...

Emviroment mapping will avalible for OpenGL?

Only OpenGL. D3D is still broken AFAIK and will probably be remaining that way.

I think it's obvious at this point that OpenGL is the best renderer to use for SCP anyway

Ok, the patch is ready, here is the update file....

http://www.oxyshare.com/d/mtvfn9Iswb2/1_5c to 1_6 patch.exe.html (http://www.oxyshare.com/d/mtvfn9Iswb2/1_5c to 1_6 patch.exe.html)

The only that is patch do is put the 29th CVS and delete the 25th ones...

I gain expeience which this program :D I can make those update .exes in 2 min XD

Problem is that it's obvious to the community but not to those joining it. I'm tempted to recompile the launcher just to add a warning saying not to run D3D :D

Yeeehaaaw!

So when is the next "offical" build getting released? 3.6.7 is now so far behind its nearly impossible to get by without a CVS build.

Just a suggestion, I don't mean to give other people greif, but maybe somone should program a simple auto-updater that downloads the newest CVS builds automatically, or somthing; because the people using Shivans torrent won't nessesarially know what a CVS build is.
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash

taylor is working on in... But I also have the idea of make a auto-updater for windows users, just for a while until taylor finish its task :P

The program that I using for make installers, also have a little Auto-updater ability... they can delete, move, download from a site, copy, unzip, find files, etc etc etc... but is not too easy to make the program to check what you have and them compare which the avalible on internet... My idea is to make an auto updater that update the CVS and add minor stuff... like the NTF Iceni when ready... But dont expect anything, I still got nothing...

OMG!
I just see a program called True Update, that is used for make Auto-updaters lol, I will check it out..
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: ShivanSpS on May 11, 2006, 01:42:33 pm
whooo, is very easy to use :P is the same company of the installer factory... well, basic, the TrueUpdate Program, whatthey do is, first check your vercion file which other vercion files in a server, and if dont mach they start to download a .exe from a server when finish, they run it, well, combaining the setup factory and true update i can make a Auto-update program for windows users... what your opinions?

Well its works, that for sure, anyway, everything depend on how far away is taylor to finish its launcher, and if I use this updater... will be no now. no until I release a new big file, which new Vps... (the updater is good for small modifications, CVS, add new HTL things, but not for a whole VP update...
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: Mars on May 11, 2006, 02:20:27 pm
Yeah, I thought there should be an updater because I get the impression that some folks are downloading the whole torrent over again whenever there's a new build, and there just has to be a better way.
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: neoterran on May 11, 2006, 02:25:14 pm
just include the updater in each torrent as a seperate file. you can download individual files in torrents if you just want to grab the updater out of the package you know.
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash

Isn't the whole point to provide one full SCP download, as opposed to many scattered peices.
Title: Re: FS Port 3.0 on FreeSpace SCP 1.5 crash
Post by: neoterran on May 11, 2006, 02:47:51 pm
I don't think you understand, one torrent can contain many seperate files. Most good clients (like www.utorrent.com) provide easy way for you to, once you have the torrent downloading, select only the files within the torrent for download. So you can get a 512kb file within a 1.72 GB torrent consisting of the main freespace rar and a smaller exe updater, for example.

I have made a decicion, I will not give any auto-updater, first, Taylor is already working on one, second, my original idea is make newbie life a lot easier, so this is considerer a "starting pack", and third, if I do everything for theirselves, their will never get intro the community... affer a  few days here you should know to update yours CVS and add HTL stuff...

I back to the original idea, 1 big pack everytime that a stable VP set is released.

The 1.5c torrent will be replaced by the 1.7 vercion when the new stable CVS which mapping come intro esene, the Direct Download will have an update file from 1.5c to 1.7 in that moment... (I not going to upload another 2GB of data so earlier :P)
