the anti microsoft sediments everwhere are coming to a head including here. I soo may completely dump microsoft operating systems from all installations i do from now and and my home computers.
That means you will probably be loosing me as a programmer and a modder for the Volition Community, unless I can get a good enough emulation package so be able to run windows programs on Linux.
Microsoft has gone to far and it's time to fly the coup

Somehow I'm not sure your singular blocking of MS products is going to sway the tide of the corporation.
Still, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do - shame you have to drop it in such a way but hey, it's your call.
-
Just as long as you promise to make Linux programs, mmkay?

how? Freespace won't work on linux, so he could not test his progs.

i was planning on it

Did you know softimage XSI has started supporting red hat 7.1?
It annoys me alot because most m$ compilers are provided by intel teams and generally make for disproportionate benchmarks (P$ optimised vs. Athlon optimised) at least in linux if you dont like the way its been compiled you can re tool it for your system..even though i concede its a damn fiddly process.
I *WOULD* run linux, but the only niggles are;
Lack of software support..linux could benefit from something like API FX32 except for OSes (thats a program that recompiles code on the fly..40% performance hit but on todays' rigs non-native code should be usable)
Twiddly, programmy reputation.
Linux scares alot of people. I like fiddling with computers but only hardware - i dont like software programming and dont want to have to learn. Microsoft, ******* though they are, offer a more or less programming-free approach to computers.
Lack of driver support.
The only oxygen drivers are provided by Xi systems..i dont want to shell out £200 for a sodding winX server. Theres not enough support from hardware vendors sadly.
In favour of linux..
i) Its easy to use, beleive it or not, once you get the hang of it.
ii) minus the bad driver support as listed above, its more plug and play than windows ever was (or my experience with it was..)
iii) Its TWICE as fast as windows..almost. Soft XSI and Mentalray just scream under a linux distro.
iiii) You feel like you're supporting something worthwhile by running it. I dont like monopolies because they're anti-competitive and then you just get a slowdown in innovation, which is bad. M$ has been somewhat pushed into making XP because of the court case and also the linux distros snapping at its' heels. Competition is good.
I know this reads like an essay but thats just the mode im in..assignment due in tomorrow :P

there is no a lack of software support.. you just need to look around
delve through sourceforge's thousands of projects
-
there is..you can get any decent 3dlabs drivers at all.
And dont tell me to get a games card dressed up as a pro card, cause i cant afford an upgrade (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

I use my computer for three things: gaming ( so Linux= nope)
watching movies ( i suppose linux is no pb for that)
3dsMax (and I know nothing about Max working under linux, it's very doubtful).
So no Linux for me.
-
no MAX at all under linux. If theres one company that M$ and Intel collectively own its discreet, rather sadly.

Nice to have you around Kazan, I gave up on Windows a while ago... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

you still have to have window's core files for that

OBSOLETE OSes ALL THE WAY BABY!!! FORGET LINUX! YAAAAAGH!!

The only thing stopping me from popping Linux on this sucker is no drivers for my modem and video card. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

if you have a WinModem throw it away and get a real one
What is your Video Card?
(The ATI Radeons are only supported by XFree86 4.1.0 with the DRI addon)
-
Ooooo, did the Linux thing for a while, but found it wasn't really useful once I stopped dabbling in programming. I still use 98, and until it's completely outdated, I'll move to something else besides XP (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
I do understand what you mean, those damn monopolies (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)

It's what I used a while back, before I got my dual-boot working error-free... saves a lot of hassle (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Well, so long as Windows doesn't suddenly go terribly bad for now reason - I'll stick with it. It may have faults but at least I know it pretty much inside out by now.
-
why don't u have 2 pc's like me (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) and one on linux and one on windblows, u could for your first programming challenge is convert descent 2 to linux if no-one else has done it before, i would love to play it on linux

i have 3 puters in my house

Win98 is best (could see where it was going with ME and 2000 - I can handle crashes but I carn't hadle no support!!!)

I would throw away the winmodem, but all the stores around here sell are windmodems or the outragously high-priced 3-com modems. (sorry, I'm not paying $99 for a frelling modem!)
btw, my vid card is a 3D Prophet 4500 (Kyro-2 based) and the only drivers I've seen are for Windows.

I would probably find a XFree86 4.1.0 DRI X Server for it
anyway, this is the last computer in my house with windows. Windows will stick around till 2002 in here at the soonest conversion.. I need those all important drivers, and I still like my games.
-
well the Konqueror webbrowser is pretty cool (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
Kazan, the best advice i can give you is to just put up with windows, and just describe it an "necessary evil"
-
nothing is a a required thing.. microsoft is getting kicked out of my house
-
Good goin' man.
I would kick my Windows stuff, but seeing how I have neither bought one of Microsoft's programs nor used their tech support in years, I fail to see the point- Linux is just not gonna happen, OS/2 most likely won't work (I am researching that...), and there are damn few other ones. I r3ealize Dos and Windows suck, but I've gotten so used to them I expect a few HD crashes a day...
My suggestion though, you wanna make a point and annoy Microsoft, don't just kick their stuff, support a rival company- that's the reason I'd ger OS/2, if I do...

I think I got lucky, Windows rarely crashes on me....
-
Do you use Linux instead or something? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
-
heres something you could do to semi remove micro****e from your comp is create your own explorer.exe that way you replace the core of the microsoft operating system except for the dam kernal
-
Linux is happening, market share continues to increase and the statics show a heavy invasion into the desktop market
-
GO LINUX!!! Force that Gates character to release something worthwhile... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I told you that It ("http://www.homestead.com/jskgames/files/home.html") would be done by November, well, mostly anyway...

The Fact that's it's free wouldn't have something to do with it? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
Look, i'm using Windows 98 at the moment, and it's never given me and grief (there was that time though...) I'll just say this, NEVER, EVER, Ring up microsoft for tech support, i never had to, nothing good old FDISK couldn't fix.
