Title: Problem
Post by: iYRe on May 21, 2006, 01:38:56 am
Hello, relative FRED noob here.

I've installed TBP 3.2, 3.3 and 3.3a in that order, i also have openAL.

Problem is, i cant get the game to launch with ANY build except the 367 build. And when that launches, i have some serious game 'hangtime' as one user put it who had a simular problem. What i mean by hangtime is that the whole game lags up for about 30 seconds to a minute, even 2.

When i try and run ANY recent build through debug mode, it stops at the openAL.. and then i get the whole "has encountered a problem and needs to shut down."

I spent the last 2 hours trying to figure it out, i searched through your forums for any problems related to mine; only finding one mention of the mouse 'hangtime'. That user seemed to fix it by choosing another build, i cant seem to get any of them to run.

My specs are

AMD 4400
nVidia Ge Force 7900 GTX 512
Win XP Pro

I do have the Freespace Open Build installed, but since TBP is a standalone, i dont see why there would be a problem on that end..

any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Right. I can tell you what's causing the hangs on 3.6.7 right off. I'll bet that's the old Processor Affinity (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,37237.msg760154.html#msg760154) bug. If that fix works at least you should be able to play the game.

Now let's deal with the CVS builds issue :)  You have OpenAL so it's not the lack of that which is causing you problems. Do you have the right version though? There is an issue with running the Creative OpenAL drivers on nVidia nForce boards or visa versa. There's a bit more advice on that problem here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39842.msg811647.html#msg811647). If that's not your problem tell us what sound hardware you have as this does appear to be an OpenAL problem.

BTW You say you have FS2_Open installed elsewhere. Which build?

Thank you, i'll try those suggestions immediatly.

I have onboard sound from a DFI motherboard, i hope that isnt the problem =\. Default sound is 'Realtek 97'. Though i dont have any audio issues when i try and run the game, audio works fine.

Though if this IS an audio program, i'll have to buy myself a soundcard.....

Also i have FSO SCP, which i downloaded from this site as well. I havnt encountered any problems with that build, however it did crash out on me at one point in some random mission. I dismissed it as purely a random occurance.

It has to do with having the right OpenAL version for your chipset. Check your device manager to find out what it says about which AC'97 type controller you have, and then see what you can find. Thing is, with so many different versions of AC'97 sound from all the different motherboard manufacturers, it may be something that can only be resolved by getting an add-on card.

Yea, its looking like buying a new soundcard will have to do.. However, the previous affinity processor suggestion has worked for me. So at least i can play on 367. Thanks alot for the assistance.

Just finished the earth minbari war, on the hunt for some more missions. :)

Post in the SCP forum. Taylor may have a better suggestion than buying a new sound card :)

A week later, i updated all of my nforce drivers, which included an audio driver.. Which replaced the realtek crap.

All of the builds work now. But thanks very much for the help :)
