Title: My First Fighter...Again...
Post by: Tyrian on May 21, 2006, 04:33:38 pm
This is my first render in over a year, pardon if it's a lttte...er...really...rusty.  Also, the colors are just off a pallette.  Where can I get some good ship textures?

Here's the ship:

GTF Super Carrot

The GTF Super Carrot is the pinnacle of GTVA vegetable engineering.  Highly manuverable, it carries two frontal hardpoints capable of mounting any mainstream armaments.  Also, the pilot never needs to worry about running out of food, as the ship is readily comsumable.  The only dangers to the ship are space-faring rabbits.

-----------------------------------------------------------

It's cartoony, I know.  Whenever I attempt to do something realistic it ends up suffering from the dreaded AC Silliness.  So I just make my renders intetionally humorous...It saves time during the creative process...  ;7

Also, sorry if this is a double post.  HLP burped and said I already posted this, but couldn't find it anywhere.

You live up to your name Tyrian. Try putting on some of the grooves that were on THE Supercarrot.

Are you going to do the USP fighters? They were always my favorite astheticallly (too bad they sucked)

I'm not sure whether I should laugh, congratulate you, or both. :D

@Mars -- Oops...Forgot about the grooves.  I'll add them later.  And I might do the other USP fighters too.  But first I would need some good ship textures.  Know where I could get some?

@Cobra -- Do both.  :D

Now I just have to texture and make tables...Gonna try to put it in one of the campaigns I downloaded...   ;7

Oh dear Rind in heaven.........that brings back memories.

If anyone can make the banana-blast it would be perfect! :D

I pinched and redesigned the Gencore ships for my own sci-fi setting years back. They're deadlier and sleeker now. :) And very, very British!! :D

Not to be anal, but no one has answered my question...Where can I get some good textures for FS2-esque ships?

There are free texture repositories all over the internet, just do a search, many of them state that you can use them for anything. The textures in the Freespace VPs can always be recycled. I've never actually done any modding, so I can't garentee these are useful resources, but it's alway worth a look.

LOL @ Carrot :D

I find it's best to learn to make your own textures, that way you have complete control over the look of the ship, but the best bet if you're looking for something 'FS2ey' (Obviously not on the Carrot?!?) then use the FS2 maps as a base set :)

HAHAHAH I'd love to see "Shivan gets owned by a carrot"   :drevil:

Btw also check Descent for textures, theres quite a few good detail ones, also check 3d Cafe has free textures (and models) http://www.3dcafe.com/  and Turbosquid http://www.turbosquid.com

As for building your own textures, if your like me and can't really, also consider "building" textures from existing textures layered.

I've looked for textures on the Internet and couldn't find any I liked.  They were mostly too low resolution.

@Flipside -- Not on the Carrot, of course.  But they will be useful if I decide to do the other USP ships.  Also, how would I go about making my own textures?

@Scooby_Doo -- I plan on texturing this, making a table for it, and releasing the package.  But first I have to finish the model...  I injured my hands at an archery practice, and computer work is still painful.  I should be able to work on it again after Memorial Day weekend.

Updated the image of the finished model.  Couldn't get the grooves in due to a shaping problem.  This is the final then...maybe.

@Scooby -- If anyone makes a campaign using my foodships, it would be...odd, to say the least...

Oh my, I remember that ship... (the supercarrot)

That was one fun (if slighty very mad at points) game.  Too bad I only got the demo.  Proberly doesn't work under XP either ::)

@Raptor --
1.) Go to SourceForge and look for DosBox.  Download it.
2.) Then Google Tyrian.  Its the first site on the list.
3.) Under the downloads section, find Tyrian 2000.  Download it.
4.) Install and follow the instructions in DosBox.
5.) Enjoy a full version of Tyrian.
6.) Repeat Step 5 as needed.

@Cobra -- We could make the Carnians (Shivans) versus Veggies (Terrans) and the Fruits (Vasudans).  The Collosus would become the GVFA Kumquat.  It's Carnian counterpart could be the CJ Ribroast.  They could blow up the Kiwi star, sending green goo throughout the Kiwi System.

You put way too much thought into that, man.

Actually you don't need dosbox. I found a version of tyrian 2000 that the music worked, but half-tempo. But anyway, I am thrilled that people actually still play this. I thought I was the only one... *sniff* still obliteration *sniff sniff* guys with a *cries* fully upgraded Zica laser. *cries more*

There is a whole "Food Empire" mod set with many variations of ship desgns for Space Empires 4... Of course you'd only get the tile pics but you could use them for Inspiration...

Not that I particularly go for that sort of thing but here's a link.

I seem to have hit a MAJOR roadblock in importing this model into FS2...  I am using a tutorial that explains how to convert a Rhino file into *.dxf which can then be moved into TrueSpace.  Only problem is that the tutorial calls for TrueSpace5.  Apparently one of the tools I need to make this model work is in TS5, but not TS3.2.  It's called Invert Normals, I believe.  I need that tool, because when you import the *.dxf into TS, it inverts all the normal surfaces.  The tool is needed to unflip them.  Since I don't have TS5, can someone give me some advice on how to get around this huge stumbling block?  (I did manage to get a full version of Rhino from my school, at least...)

You can use blender (http://www.blender3d.com) to invert normals
