Title: Freespace vs. Galactic Civilizations II
Post by: bfobar on May 26, 2006, 05:06:57 pm
So lately I've been hooked on GalCivII, but freespace is always a long term love of mine. My modding question is this: Has anyone started porting freespace ships into that game for use? GalCivII supports modding for ships and a lot of Star Trek, Star Wars, and Babylon 5 ships are showing up. I've been looking all over the net to see if anyone has started working on modding the Freespace models for GalCivII yet, but have had no luck. Anyone here have any leads?

P.S. Holy crap there's a search button now! Still no leads though.

It's been suggested, but no-ones bothered to do anything about it.  All there is at the moment is some species icons.

I think someone should try Freespace ships. If I knew anything about moddeling (aside from extrude from Blender, some time ago) I'd make them.

Well, the resources are out there and available, and there are undoubtedly tutorials up for grabs, so what exactly is stopping you from learning.

I've tried learning, but modelling and me don't agree (I can barely make an odd square while trying to make the blade of a sword over a two week period, let alone anything remotely approaching anything resembelling a freespace ship. I'm that bad at it).

I haven't found ANY civ/space empire buildign game that I really liek enough to bother to learn how to import models into.. (with teh exception of SE4, no models required it;s all text and bmp's)...

I just got Space Rangers 2 from work and it's CRAP! oj it;s 3d alright but gameplay looks 2d and low quality.

The latest game that looked any good was not a "Empire Builder" type, but a fleet RTS called NEXUS...

I have high hopes at the moment for Space Empires 5... The Developer indicated he wants to get into the 3d world and make it modder friendly.

Ah, yes. Nexus: The Jupiter Incident, while not the greatest game ever, it's one of the best damn looking space-sims i've ever played. It's worth noting that the style of conflict within the FS Universe is really not suited to the style available through Nexus, so a faithful and enjoyable adaptation would be nigh-on impossible without some serious thought put into making it work.

Space Rangers 2 is awsome game. I take it you expected it to be a space shooter? The combat feels strange at first, because it's turn based and you don't really do anything but assign a target and watch. Its more like a space adventure thing. Theres combat, real time strategy, elite like merchant action, and text adventures. There's lots and lots to do. Sure it has flaws (name even one game that doesn't) but it's definitely not crap.

Space Rangers 2 is bloody brilliant. The RTS stuff is a bit dodgy but other than that it's superb.
Needs way more recognition.

I'm glad you like it but ATM I can't justify the space it's wasting on my drive.. More so the newest "crap" to move in from the reject bin to my comp... DARWINIA...

It's a nice concept and all but it feels like a giant step backward from the types of games I am used to. Imagine a 360 degree LODE RUNNER but you are fighting viruses, That's Darwinia in a nutshell...

Ok that's 2 for 2 and I am wondering if CinemaWare will ever release a game I like lol!

Oh yeah Nexus:The jupiter incident. Heres one jewel of a game. I loved it. Even played it twice. But in order to make a mod for it or an adaptation based on FS2 or viceversa would be quite hard. That doesnt mean it wouldnt be great !

Maibe but imagine them all over the HLPBB and soon after all over the BB in america. Then Japan.

Then Europe and Asia.

*sadistic laughter* The bunnies are taking over the world and there is nothing you can do about it! I already conquered 2 BB here! Or rather i'm on my way to conquering them!

Actualy now that i think about it the Bunny has already taken over some major publication such as Playboy...you know with the whole bunny thing they have. Also remember the apple omputers with theyr apple loggo.....apples ae a major component of the bunny's food diet. It's second after carrots if i'm not mistaken.

This sugest that the Bunny has been working on taking over the world for far longer then anyone imagines.

Nexus looks really sweet, but i was curious what type of gameplay is it? In other words is it gameplay that's like starcraft, or gameplay like fs2?

Sort of like a naval battleship simulator, But in space....... ITs one of those games thats pretty unique, Thats the simplist way i can put it. I'm sure theres a demo somewhere.

umm actualy i played through the whole game its sort of a space combat/rpg/fs kind of thing.

some of the effects there ar absolutely marevelous.

I could never find the patience for Nexus after it kept killing me on one mission no matter my efforts; I got particularly annoyed after discovering the majority of online walkthroughs didn't seem to match my version.

I probably ought to go back and give it another chance, I suppose, but I don't know if I have the space left on my HD anymore...

I've finished it too, .......
I call it a battleship simulation in space because you never directly control any of the ships, (but its not an RTS) you just assign orders to the ships in your fleet and they act according to selectable behaviour ie aggressive, defensive.

The last mission is visually stunning and iff your PC anint up to sped then theres no point playing it with features turned off......

Defending the Colossus while Admiral Condescendingly Incompetent goes off and gets his butt kicked. I came very, very close the first time I played it; but the Angelwing got blasted by the opposing battleship moments before I would have blown it back to the Stone Age.

Successive attempts I did progressively worse each time. Which makes no sense, but that's what happened.

EDIT: It's oddly like my continuing attempt to beat XCOM-2 in that fashion. I've got very technically competent at the game by now...but the game still defies me because it reacts to players of my level of skill by upping its level of difficulty even more.

Tell me you rushed one of the little destroyers power their siege cannon before they actuallt fire the thing

I did; unfortunately a little too slow and the shield on the Colossus went down, so I finished blasting the destroyer and turned on the battleship to keep it away from the Colossus.

Successive attempts have gone to hell much earlier.

Are the Brutus and Sparta still alive and kicking?

also try and upgrade the guns. I have no problem what so ever taking down enemy battleships with the angelwing.
Dont relly too much on missiles cuz well you run out of them.

also increase the speed of the angelwing to actualy get to the destroyer faster. the slow it to normal and overload your guns.

It should work. Also are the Brutus and sparte still alive and kicking? Did you upgrade the destroyers and the colossus?? What about the engines shields battery pack generators of the angelwing??

At the Colossus mission, you can only upgrade the two destroyers though IIRC. The Avalanche is your ***** but not your willing ***** :D and the battleship isn'ay part of ye' fleet.

Doh....forgot about that was thinking something a few missions after this one. Sorry though. But still that mission is relatively simpple. No ofence please cuz there was non intended. Its been a while since i looked over the Nexus but still remember some things. Regardless you can actualy stick those two destroyers to help protect the Colossus and the Avalanche and go on ahead with the Angelwing or with both angelwing and avaanche. I remember gooing at first with the angel wing then after taking out a destroyer i think wen ahean with the avalanche.

Oh and dont swet it this is one of those easy missions I cant wait to see how you get past some...ummm....dificult missions. This is not spoiling its just a warning.

Umm never managed to get that working though cant figure out why??!!!

It doesnt matter what matters is the fact that I would love to see a mod of FS for Nexus i mean with the whole beams and stuff. That would be like so awesome.

*starts drooling and daidreaming*

gooing to nag a few people here if sposible! *hopes he doesnt get fed to Carl for this*

The mod set is pretty cool to do, the weapons are handled in an excel spreadhseet, and the models are .lwo.

I cant handle the stress of managing a whole mod, but if anyones interested?

well i would be more then happy to help but alas mi modding sucks big time basicly i'm useless at this!

That doesnt mean I will stop nagging people about it!

Oh and it certainly doesnt mean i will stop learnidn how to create models.
Title: Re: Freespace vs. Galactic Civilizations II
Post by: Colonol Dekker on June 09, 2006, 06:15:50 am
All the models exist already, Its just conversion and assigning light points to them (i believe thats how subs are positioned in LW/nexus engine) Then generating an AI Script for each ship class, + The missions themselves.

Anyone with the game, just read the editor instructions, its got all youve ever needed..

Post by: AlphaOne on June 09, 2006, 07:36:05 am
umm why not put the models in the Original campaign?? I mean create a duplicate then replacing the ships with the FS ones.

Oh well C D would you like dooing a conversion of the Fs to Nexus??
