I signed up for the High-School Marching Band, and in addition to the compitions we do, we get to go on many, many parades. Monday, at least in the U.S., will be Memorial Day. I have to get up at 5:30 am or so to get ready to hold a 10 or so pound saxaphone, supported completly by my arms, while marching in-step for a mile or so. It dosn't seem like much, but try doing it in 80 degree weather (Farenhiet, obviously), while wearing big heavy dark uniforms. Last year, 21 members fainted while playing the Star Spangled Banner or while marching. Please wish me luck so I won't be an idio-- an idiot who faints.

God I hated doing that **** in high school. I resented having to give myself to the fascist propaganda machine in exchange for the opportunity to play in a musical ensemble.
Needless to say, college is a vast improvement.
-
Bah! I've been in the marching band for all four years of high school. I play saxophone too and it's not that heavy, just get a neckstrap. 80 F is pansy heat; we had parades and practices in 90-100 degree weather. Just be smart: drink a lot of water and wear a hat and you'll be fine. Only the morons who don't drink anything could pass out, which I don't see how you could do at all in 80 degree weather.

Seriously? A day honoring fallen American soldiers is considered a part of facist propaganda? Oh my, then...

If your arm dosen't get tired, you either stand funny or have a REALLY good neckstrap.

Man band was fun. :)
I play saxophone too sizzler. Do you play a Barri because I`m pretty my Alto doesn`t way 15 pounds.
good luck man.
(gives sizzle the respect knuckles) ;)
-
well yeah, it gets tired after a while, especially my right thumb. still, you could be playing sousaphone instead. ;)
EDIT: actually, I weighed my alto one time and it was about 12.5 lbs. Kind of a lot to be hanging from your neck.
-
I play alto. I'm pretty sure it didn't weigh that much, but I remember carring the case to school and not baing able to move my hand without hurting it for about 5 minutes after putting the case down. :)
Man, my case is HUGE (for an alto, at least).
What school did you guys play at? I'm at P-CEP (http://www.pcmb.net/). (yay!)

It's statements like these that make me glad I'm in the drumline instead. ;)
Good luck, sizzler. Sounds like fun.

It's statements like these that make me glad I learned the Oboe and am thus exempt from Marching Band. :D

We once had an Acordian playing. I think it was two years ago or something. Mayby that show about Gypses.
-
Say what?! ...Do ...Do you even know what an Oboe is?
-
I was in the high school marching band and I played trumpet :D I always wanted to play flute but those stupid school band admins said I didn't have the lips for flute :wtf:
-
What a coinky-dink. I almost decided on the trumpet, but then changed my mind and picked the flute. Also, I think your band admins were full of ****. I've never heard of anyone not having proper lips for the flute.
The downside, of course, is that I do put up with a certain number of "skin flute" jokes every so often.
-
YAY! I wasn't one of those kids who keeled over! Haha! In fact, my section leader was one of the first to go! Hahaha!! Other than my reed beaking, and my extra one falling out of the bell, I did good!!
Also, what is your parade uniform? Ours is pretty much the same as show uniform (black long pants, heavy gray jacket), except with a heavy red & blue jacket instead of the other one. No hats, gloves, plumes ( :( ), ETC.
Say what?! ...Do ...Do you even know what an Oboe is?
It's like a clarinet, except with a double reed. And more pointy.

*did well*

Those stupid nuts said my lips were too thick! What a load of rubbish. Anyway, I took lessons to learn Chinese flute later, which was a lot of fun :)
*Wondering how thesizzler is doing on the big parade day*
-
I can play saxaphone, learnt for a while, but I'm more a string or percussion player (Guitar, Bass, Violin, Keyboards, Tabla, Bongos etc). Oddly enough, never played in a marching band, though I did used to play in a rock band ;)
Well, regardless of my opiinion on the War, happy Memorial day, heres wishing as many people from all races come back alive and well as possible.

I can see the point, in that these types of things tend to work on the assumption, or to convey the sense, that all wars are just and all those who die die for a good cause worth dying for. There is a danger, perhaps, in military memorials wrongly giving the impression that said war was morally right.
On the other hand, the whole principle of the military is based around unquestioning subservience, and it's the politicians who really carry the can for sending people to die in stupid wars, so I personally don't object to it. I think every memorial day, every 11th November, should really be regarded as a call for an end to war (even though it isn't seen that way), so we don't need to have memorials.

If there's one thing I've learned about marching band, it's this...
Don't walk behind 60 horses while wearing all-white shoes and pants.
-
On the subject somewhat on another board I'm visiting one of the regulars (die-hard ultraconservative) is *****ing that Google doesn't have a "Memorial Day" themed logo and (though he's not outright saying it) implies it's part of some 'liberal anti-military' thing from their 'Do no evil policy.'
Seriously, these are the same people who ***** about frivolous lawsuits and oversensitivity and yet he's going ballistic over a company deciding to put up things like writer's birthdays instead of federal holidays.
-
Google is pretty much your average evil giant corperation. I agree that it is an evil soul sucking feind, but I think not having a memorial day logo is an extraordinarially moot point (they should have one for every single Japanese holiday.)

I'm just hazarding a guess here, but if Google did put up a logo, he'd probably blast it as flippant commercial exploitation?
-
Oh probably.
But I did manage to shut him down with this:

Well, I'm afraid to say that I must unveil the correct and patriotic search engine for the next millenium. That's right kids: Reeeeeepublic!
The search engine that will destroy the liberal scum threatening America once and for all! ...and will ensure that TRUE AND PROPER American holidays have their logo changes and not fluffly liberal crap like Sir Conan Dolly's birthday!
Their Editorial Bias? PURE ABSOLUTE 100% BEEF AMERICAN BIAS BABY.
Oh snap, they forgot their Memorial Day logo too.
It's one thing to ask for respect and remembrance it's another thing to be a jingoist dick. Moral of the story: the mech game community is the mirror universe to the space fighter game community :p

this is my only beef with singing in choir, except replace government music with religious music.
after awhile, you just kinda get sick of jesus, and some of the songs are just silly. for example: Ride on King Jesus. here's some of the lyrics:
"ride on, king jesus. ride on, king jesus. ride, ride, conquering king. i want to go to heaven in the morning.
if you see my brother, tell him for me, i'm gonna ride my horse on the battlefield. i wanna go to heaven in the morning"
i think i missed the part in the bible where jesus was riding a horse on a battlefield leading armies to glorious victory...
-
I was in chior in the 3rd. grade. I hated it. It sucked. Was the worst.
-
Turambar, I think that the song writer was a subject of that oh so fun game of:
We're going to replace his Bible with a Koran, and see if the family can tell the difference.
*30 years later*
"Ride on king Jesus! Conquer my man! Shake it baby!"
-
Hehehehe, it does seem to reek of 14th Centuryesque 'Burn the Heathen, steal their Women' type Church songs :)

My McKenna-class begs to differ with you. :p
