10 Things your ipod wont tell you.
And thats exactly why I bought a creative zen.
Opinions?

Why would I buy music when I can get it for free?
Also, my mobile phone plays everything from mp3's to MIDI's and I can freely put on it or take off it any songs I want whenever I want.
-
And I thought I was the only one... *sniff

Got a Zen Micro myself...for many of those reasons that I already knew about personally. I'm not as hip with the Zen but I've got a replaceable battery and no fancy iTunes related garbage on my computer. Just Windows Explorer which is a necessary evil.

You know, just because you use an iPod and iTunes doesn't mean you have to buy from the iTunes music store. I have about five gigs of music on my iPod and not one track is from the online store. Not using the online music store also means you're free to move the files wherever you want, as long as you enable disk use on the iPod. What it comes down to is that online music stores are a generally ****ty way to buy music. Just buy CDs and rip them and you've solved a couple of those issues.
6. "I'm destroying your hearing."
That one is retarded. If you turn your headphones on any device up to full volume, you're an idiot.
8. "I've sparked a crime wave."
So it's bad because it's valued? That's very... Buddhist.
-
I have a nano but I don't dare use iTunes for the simple fact that .aac is a crappy format before even considering the "digital rights management" (pfeh!) angle.
-
Why is there even a necessity to go "Anti-ipod"? It's not like ipods are threatening your way of life. "Anti-ipod" is just screaming "I wish I was popular, I'm a loser".
-
There is no ****ing point to having an out-of-the-box volume level equal to that of a jet engine. There's a nice little chart on this site: http://www.glenbrook.k12.il.us/GBSSCI/PHYS/CLASS/sound/u11l2b.html
All it takes is for the volume to be accidentally adjusted higher. Maybe the iPod gets yanked somehow, and in the process the volume is turned up and the earphones unplugged. Then the earphones are plugged in...
-
Just don't use PDA and iPod in the same sentence or else people will pop outta the woodwork and bash you for it.
Seriously, all digital audio devices have thier place. iPods are fashion accessories, like Motorola brand mobile phones. They have the same functionality from others, and lack certain key elements from being truly stand-out products, while at the same time being symbols of glamour, and possibly status. If you want something truly functional, you have to look elsewhere. Get a Pocket PC with a 4, 6, or even 8 GB microdrive and put your DRM-FREE MP3's* on it, put your DRM-FREE Divx encoded videos on it, and you got yourself a handy all-in one solution that spanks any other audio/multimedia device out there.

the only thing that made me get an ipod over another player, was the fact that it can play video. it turns out the video playback is rather good, but it eats your batteries. it also seems it cant play movies over 50 megs. i tried putting a couple movies on it, but they tend to freeze up if theyre too big. itunes is rather pathetic at transcoding your videos, so youl want to use a 3rd party proggie (videora ipod converter seems to work well). you can play movies if you want to break them up with video editing software, but chances are your battery would die before you finished watching it. so all in all i was diaspointed. but the ipod still does its thing. the photo thingie works well too, i keep all my mod screenshots so i can show off my graphic design skill, even put on some of my fraps videos. i very much doubt it will last long enough for the battery to fail. you can recover your mp3s and videos through the file system, but all your file names will be shot, your tags on the other hand will stll hold their data. the ipod plugin for winamp, while it only really works for 2nd and 3rd generation ipods, should stil be able to recover your mp3s (ive not tested it so let me know if im wrong) regaurdless of what gen ipod it is. there is also ipod linux, which i hope, will expand ipods features (idoom :D). as for itunes, it really has but one purpose, to copy my mp3, mp4s and photos to my ipod. untill you can buy mp3 or ogg files off the net, i refuse to partake in any service that doesnt use one of those formats. its not like they loose money that way, 95% of people arent smart enough to back up theri files anyway. what id wish theyd do is put the ipod hard drive into a pda. it would be far superior than anything on the market and youd also have its other features as well.

Why wouold i spend money on an ipod, when you can get a half gig generic brand mp3 player for about £35, i use my phone anyway...
http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=80 (http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/details.jsp?globalObjectId=80)
Its i believe the only differences between this and the V3 are screen size and 3G, i may be wrong but i cant see much difference apart from aesthetics and a few features..
I've had this phone for about 8 months now, I bumped it with a gig transflash card, It can play mp3s mp4, I can even use nero and 3GP converter to recode dvds, I got 8 episodes of family guy on it :D
But my psp is slowly taking over my mobile fun time at the mo.

Because maybe one or two people may figure out that there are better products on the market that don't have the iPod name attached to them and that consumers should be drive to find the best MP3 player on the market...not necessarily the shiney one that everyone knows about. If you know all about the best MP3 players on the market and still select the iPod...well then at least you've made an informed decision.
-
End of the day, people have to buy what they believe is right for themselves.
Ipso Facto,
Anyway IPODS Smell.............
-
lol I'm not even going to try and protect IPods, I know I'll get flamed from some biased mind. At the end of the day, I have an ipod, I have iTunes, I love them both for style and so far I haven't had a problem with DRM since its all MP3's that get converted over. WMP has just as much DRM as iTunes anyway.
-
IPODS Smell.............
Damn straight :pimp:

I'm not an iPod fan; don't have one, don't want one. But I feel obliged to point out some flaws in that list o' ten.
1/ arguement against Apple DRM and iTunes rather than the iPod itself.
2/ fair point, but no comparison with other companies services
3/ again, no comparison with other products to verify this is 'bad'. also cites only one or 2 quotes as if some sort of definitive proof.
4/ See 1. also, related to music industry and DRM more than Apple itself, and offhand would apply to other online music stores.
5/ see 2 again.
6/ see FPs' earlier reply. Utter stupidity.
7/Rather stupid, again. Criticises, in effect, consumer demand rather than the quality of individual products. One the one hand, is criticising the iPod for being fashionable and leading to older unfashionable models - yet not criticising the competition for being, well, less fashionable (and thus in less demand).
8/ See FP again. You can't blame theft on the object being stolen; that would make Ferraris ****, because they are desirable. Money is ****, because introducing it created theft of money. Etc.
9/ Again, really criticising the market rather than product here; why don't they just out and out say 'overpriced'? amuses me that AOL seem tobe attacking on value for money, though
10/See 1.
It's basically a long attack on itunes more than anything else, IMO. And do AOL have a competing music sales service? why, of course! Advertised in the article, no less. It's all meaningless. You don't want an iPod? Fine. I have a creative Zen - it's cheap, but pish usability. But don't make it into some big arguement of lifestyle choices; there are far more important things in the world to worry about.

Like whether the giant subspace chicken "BuCKAAW!!" is still clucking.
I wonder what happened to that guy, Maybe he OD'd on Shivan space crack.........?? :eek2:

Ah more unnessesary iPod hate.
I have an iPod and love it to death. When I went to buy my MP3 player I know I wanted one with a very large capacity and that was cheap, I opted for a 20GB iPod Photo and now I can't even leave the house with it. It's speed and battery life are just awesome, the only problem I have with it is that it destroys sound with high bass levels, but that's just audio compression for you anyway.
Also for anyone that likes that kind of stuff, the iPod development and third-party software in the form of iPod Linux is nothing short of brilliant.
All of these people saying the iPod is a fashion statement and that's why it sucks need to kiss my arse. I personally couldn't give a **** what using an iPod says about me, when I'm listening to it, it's hidden in the bottom of my bag and all you can see are these headphones coming out of the corner. (Not the original ones.)
Come on, mobile phones are way more fashionable and mine is about 5 years old still bleeping away with it's monochrome screen. If it sends and recieves calls it's good enough, hence why when I bought my iPod I wanted a music player with a large capacity. Even though I'm about a couple of GB from maxing it now. =/
As for iTunes, what the hell is up with iTunes? I've not once bought a single song using it and I class the syncing feature as nothing short of a godsend, it's so easy to categorise my music exactly how I'ld want to using it's library. On my PC it only serves as my iPod syncing software, I don't use it for playing music and it's never doing anything else. Plus if you don't like iTunes there are scores of third-party syncing software.
The most ridiculous arguments I've heard are from people who go all "Oh Mac sucks I hate Apple." Oh yeah, that really has a lot to do with the iPod. Both products coming from totally different deptartments of what is a huge organisation, gimmie a break.
Anyone else?
-
and now I can't even leave the house with it.
Realy, why is that? ;7

Because music is such a huge part of my life that I have to be listening to it for most of the day and my iPod is a million times easier to use than my MP3 CD player ever was.

I'm guessing you mean to say 'leave without it'? :)

ive got a nice iriver
its small, its got 1gb of flash memory, it was $80, and i havent even filled it up. it plays .ogg files, so i recompress everything, and everything works very smoothly.
i'd never get any sort of ipod, mostly because the engineering is on a par with dell laptop hard drives and american cars.

Ach, you know you love it.

the main reason i go with an ipod is its interface, how else am i gonna navigate my 5000 song archive, thing also has enough space to backup everything of importance on my computer. of course they lie their ass off about the things capability to hold 15000 songs, if i didnt use it for backup i could probibly cram in another 4000 songs on it, for a total of 9000. i also didnt like that they didnt put on any new games, the text file reader still only supports 4k files, and the video playback isnt what i had expected. also with a bigger screen they couda displayed more tag information, like release year, i discovered it could read the lyric tags, which is nice. itunes is even crappyer than before. its slow and ineffietient compaired to winamp (hopefully in the future it will support 5gen ipods). the real reason i went with the ipod: the evil you know.

Ive had a 30 video ipod for about 2 months now and I have been thrilled to death about all of its features. I have 5 gigs of music and piles of videos (simpsons, family guy, southpark, scare tactics etc) that i converted with Videodora and they work great. The video format is similiar to Xvid, so the movie sizes are small and you can fit a literal metric ****ton of movies on it. I was yet even more amazed when i found out you could plug the ipod into your TV via A/V cables and stream movies from there.
About Itunes: i think it is more than sufficient for sorting and sync-ing my music. The check/uncheck system works great.
Itunes store: I pretty much ignore this except when I want to buy seasons of TV shows and its easier to pay 10$ than spend hours finding, downloading and converting them off of bittorrent.

OT: Why did BlackDove get monkeyed?
OnT:
iRiver Clix is the best flash based mp3 player out right now. Too bad it's only 2GB though, but it still is about as small as a nano, though thicker, has video playback capabilities, and a bigger screen than the ipod video. It also has FM radio, recording, etc. All features Apple seems really reluctant to put in...
-
recording, etc.
Yeah that's a weird one, iPod Linux can record, why Apple wont put it in thier firmware is beyond me.
-
you have to enable recording through the options menu, but then you gotta spend $30 bucks on a $0.50 microphone in $1 piece of molded plastic with a $2 proprietary ipod connector on it to use it.
-
Fukc that.
