Title: Doom in Doctor who??
Post by: starbug on June 04, 2006, 01:49:20 pm
I have just watched the new ep Impossible planet from last nite (gota love sky+) and did anyone notice that it is very very similiar to the storyline of Doom 3! ie group of scientists find an ancient Civ with the Devil locked away = UAC in mars exploring ruins of the ancient civ that fought the demons. Also the bits were the Beast talks to one of the Scientists just like when Betruger taunts the marine in the game. Then when the station has power problems the sounds are the same sounds of the doors opening/closing in the original doom!

I have to say a good ep, can't wait for next sat! and the show has gone back to its roots a QUARRY!!!!

I completely agree, Its all good though, The doors sounding the same must have been done on purpose. BTW Scooty mc fit-bird (the one who ended up in the black hole) She was fit as hell.

Felt like it was borrowing from Event Horizon to me. Good episode. Worst sets I've seen in a sci-fi show in ages. Carrying on the great tradition of british sci-fi as Starbug suggests.

Starbug (obviously a dwarfer ) did you see Dr Who extra? It mentioned quarry once or twice iirc

LOL It's also carrying on in the fine tradition of Doctor Who backdrops ;) I'll always remember one scene where Cybermen are marching down a corridor, and you can see the silver foil on the walls wobbling in time with their marching ;)

Riiiiight. Because Doom invented the idea of accidently releasing a sealed-away ancient evil.  ::)

And 3DRealms writes their own catchphrases.

I'm putting my money on the Beast being the Master.

The trapdoor was similar in design to the one that held the Eye of Harmony in the '96 Dr Who movie. I reckon the blackhole is actually the Eye of Harmony. It would make sense for the Beast - who has nurtured evil since the dawn of time - to be a Time Lord. Outside the temporal and physical reach and knowledge of the Tardis would be a logical place to imprison a Time Lord. It would explain what happened to the Eye of Harmony. The technology required to wield the power the gravity-field is generating seems to be outside the reach of anyone or anything the Doctor has encountered with the exception of the Time Lords themselves, who harnessed the power of the Eye of Harmony blackhole.

It all just kinda makes sense for the Beast to be the Master.

Oh and in the 'Next Time...' trailer it has the Beast saying "You shall die, so I may live" - which was the Master's goal in the '96 movie; to steal the Doctor's remaining regenerations so he could recorporealise himself.

Yip i am a Dwarfer and very proud of it  :D  :D !!! and i love Dr Who, You can't beat British Sci-fi, with lines like, Lets get out there an Twat it! or Better Smeg than dead.

It would be cool if was the master, but i am hoping that it is Sutekh(sp) sum how survived the Pyramids of Mars( tom baker ep), cos the Beast refered to him self as Satan and a few others which is the same names Sutekh used to call himself and the guy playing the beast is the same actor who played Sutekh. Well thats what the Wiki says. Wonder why these shows kill of the beautifull women? and i though the sets were ment to look well crap on purpose in that ep from what i remember from the Drwho Extra on BBC3?

<Lister> Love is what seperates us from animals.
<Rimmer> No, Lister. What seperates us from animals is that we don't use our tongues to clean our own genitals.

And the ultimate ****ing classic:

"Busy, Dave?"
"Well, yeah. I am, actually."
"Oh, then you won't want to know about the two super-light-speed fighters that are tracking us."
"What?!"
"I'll leave you to your bubble blowing, mate."
"No, Hol, come on, come on."
"They're from Earth."
"Three million years away?"
"They're from the NorWEB federation."
"What's that?"
"The North Western Electricity Board. They want you, Dave."
"Me? Why? What for?"
"For your crimes against humanity."
"You what!"
"It seems when you left Earth three million years ago, you left two half-eaten German sausages on a plate in your kitchen."
"Did I?"
"You know what happens to sausages left unattended for three million years?"
"Yeah. They go all mouldy."
"Your sausages, Dave, now cover seven-eighths of the Earth's surface. Also you left seventeen pounds, fifty pence in a bank account. Thanks to compound interest you now own ninety-eight percent of all the world's wealth, but since you've hoarded it for three million years nobody's got any money except for you and NorWEB."
"Why NorWEB? "
"You left a light on in the bathroom. I've got a final demand here for one hundred and eighty billion pounds."
"A hundred and eighty billion pounds! You're kidding!"
"April fool."
"But it's not April."
"Yeah, I know, but I could hardly wait six months with a red-hot jape like that under my belt."

Title: Re: Doom in Doctor who??
Post by: an0n on June 07, 2006, 02:08:43 pm
Vague, ill-confirmed reports on the interweb.

It's been 'known' about for a while.

I'm guessing that was the general purpose of the whole 'alternate universe' thing - to let them bring back the Cybermen and Daleks even though they'd been thoroughly dispatched previously.

Still, it'd be nice if they put everything down to some AU Daleks. Like have the 'hiccup' that jerked the Tardis out of this universe being part of a greater arc showing the Daleks of the multiverse were beginning to meddle in things that previously only the Time Lords could.
Title: Re: Doom in Doctor who??
Post by: starbug on June 07, 2006, 02:35:14 pm
Russel t Davies said that the Cybermen have been confirmed to appear in the season finale, its has also been slipped the it would be possible that the doc would face a Dalek in this season, and Russel has stated that the season finale will have an epic cliffhanger. So it is possible the the Daleks fight the Cybermen with little old earth in the middle, that is one fight i have always wanted to see since i was a kid. (sad i know but who cares!)

With no one to counter them in this universe now that the Time Lords are gone it would be a fairly interesting idea.

Since an0n mentioned The Master though, I do really want to see him return. The Daleks remain my favourite 'Who bad guy but The Master came a close second and it'd be great to see a better modern day interpretation of him than the last film the Americans did.

(No offence to any Americans meant here, but it was a poor film).

I was confuzzled about something, actually, not being a particularly regular viewer; are there are also no Time Lords in the alternate Cybermen universe?

That's a good point y'know.. just because the Time Lords were wiped out in one dimension doesn't mean they were across the board..

The Time Lords might have been but I'm not sure the Daleks were... in the first Cyberman episode the Doctor made some comment about his people stopping that kind of thing from happening, repairing dimensional holes etc...

This is gonna sound kind of bad i know but bear with me it just popped into my head.... In the episode where Rose saves her dad, "reapers" (for lack of a better word) Appear and f**k everyone over until Roses dad kills himself healing the "tear" in time. They come about because someone interfered in the natural flow of time and things. Correct?

So why for Jeebus Cripes sake, dont the same thingies appear any time the Doctor stops anyone from getting killed? EG, Fist one of the new series with the dummies with guns in their hands?

No.  The Reapers appeared because two of the Doctor and Rose being in the same place at the same time had created a weak point.

I got the impression that the Time Lords were unique, in that they were the first and only race to master the higher order mechanics of the multiverse. Meaning they were the first (and through that virtue, the only) race capable of opening gateways to other dimensions.

They spread out to police the multiverse before anyone else and steered others away from that knowledge for fear of the havok they'd wreak.

So when Gallifrey was wiped out and the Eye of Harmony became kaput, and the Tardises lost the only thing powerful enough to let them skip dimensions, and began having to resort to draining energy from temporal hotspots to keep themselves fuelled for time-jumping.

As for the Reapers - they only showed up because a paradox was created. A few infact.

I agree, the whole Eternal demon about to be set free had a LOT of potential in DR WHo as i thought they might throw a half intelligent story behind it. But it all spiralled towards Doctor + Rose + love = beat the odds.

Rose 'dies' in the finale.

I say 'dies' because it's generally accepted that Rose will die, given what The Beast said about the 'valiant child who dies in battle'. But the producers have said it'll all be very vague and open. They've admitted that Piper is leaving, but Rose's exit - while technically a death - may not be a proper Death.

My guess is that the Time Vortex pops back up.

I say that because while I'm sure you've all noticed the 'running theme' thing this series is the mention of Torchwood in each episode (New Earth excluded) - I doubt many of you noticed that last season's theme of 'Bad Wolf' has also been popping up, indicating that the Bad Wolf (merged Rose/Vortex) may have made more changes to the timeline than simply wiping out the Daleks.

The two most notable references were when the werewolf said Rose had 'something of the wolf about [her]' and in the latest episode where the Torchwood database's information on Rose had been corrupted by 'the Bad Wolf virus'.

So I'm guessing the Bad Wolf made some connection with Rose in whatever timeframe the finale takes place and her 'death' is something along the lines of merging with the vortex permenantly.

Um, the story is on the bbc website.
And I've not read that either. I want to see it happen rather than read it then see it... for the same reasons I don't read the Lost spoilers before the series is aired over here.
