I'd thought I'd have one more go at it and...
Here it is: The new, and improved, subspace effect!!! (http://www.filelodge.com/files/room19/512545/SubspaceNew.mov)
And here are the JPG images: http://www.filelodge.com/files/room19/512545/WarpMap01.zip
Yes, that's right. One of you is going to have to convert them to .DDS' and make a .EFF.
...
Crud, just now as I am writing this post, I just remembered that I need to make a Cyan one for the knossos.
Well, just work with that one for now. I'll get to the knossos later.
-J.P.
-
It's all corrupted, try uploading again. IMHO you need to get another file host.
-
Ok, I made a .RAR this time.
http://www.filelodge.com/files/room19/512545/WarpMaps.rar
I added the cyan one too this time.
-J.P.
-
Still not working. The file I'm getting is 8KB, effectively too little information to even be a valid RAR
-
Man, I clicked on the link and it says it's 4.13 mb.
Got a filter on your computer? That sometimes stops downloads after it downloads a bit.
-J.P.
-
No filter, but oh well. It's all good. :pimp:
-
okay can one of you convert to dds and make an eff for us heathens ?
and should these be in dxt1a or dxt5 ?
-
I'll post a VP of the EFF/DDS combo shortly. And these files should be dxt1c. :)
@J.P.: I know it makes for smaller files, but please avoid distributing new media in JPG format. Even at the highest quality setting it has compression artifacts and those only get compounded when they are converted to DXT compression. Use either PNG or TGA format for the files so that conversion to a lossy format doesn't have to start with a lossy format.
Oh and the warpmap is one of those very few effects that can actually benefit heavily from being 1024x1024. Would be nice to have the two size versions so that the adv_effects mediavp can include the larger versions.
EDIT: http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/misc/a_warpmap.rar
-
So how do I use this? Just put the VP file in \mod_name\data\ folder?
-
Just \mod_name\ folder.
-
one day, in the distant future, we'll be able to have a static warp image, and have a super cool ripply render-to-texture effect doing all the distortion
imagine how awesomely cool that'd be
-
Quake 4/Doom 3 used rendered textures + bump mapping, on quite high poly models to give the appearance of higher poly models iirc.
-
I copy the vp the the other mediavps but i have to admit i don't see any difference between the "new" warp effect and the effect in the newest mediavps
maybe someone could post a screenie to compare.

Yeah, I thought about that one real carefully. ;) The filename makes it so that it will still get the warp effect out of the MediaVPs. Just rename warpmap.vp to something like a_warpmap.vp and it will get loaded properly then.
-
way ahead of you, taylor ;)
-
Sooo, could I see a screenshot, please? :D
-J.P.
-
It looks really good, definately noticable as better on the larger ships. Good job.
-
me likesh
-
There we go, now that's a warp effect. We should stick with the cyan one, i think people know what i mean by getting tired of the blue one :)
-
No, i disagree. I think the blue one looks more powerful and just, well, better.
-
We have to go with the blue one anyway because that's what :v: started out with :D
-
Don't suppose we could just have both?
-
So exactly how do I install my subspace graphic? Just re-installed freespace 2 and the scp.
EDIT: Also, now that I've installed the latest mediavp's, I'm getting this error.
Error: mv_music-mus.tbm(10):
Error: Required token = [#SoundTrack End] or [$Name:], found [+nocreate] .
File:parse/parselo.cpp

EDIT2: Actually, I get way more errors than that if I keep clicking the "OK" button.

You are using very old builds (like 3.6.7 release build) try getting more recent builds like the 3.6.9 RC1.
Then you can install your graphic by for example downloading the set taylor converted to dds and then renaming the file (warpmap.vp) into something like a_warpmap.vp and placing it to your mediavp directory
-
Ok, I did that. But now it says it can't read the flag file everytime I open the launcher.
And the game still won't run.
-J.P.
-
It seems you havent yet installed OpenAL... try getting it from here http://www.openal.org/
-
Alrighty, thanks a lot! I got it working. I'm satisified now with the graphic.
-J.P.
-
I would still greatly appreciate a TGA version of the new effects if you don't mind. The JPG ones just have too many artifacts in them and it only gets worse when they are converted to DDS.
-
If you can't convert to DDS, you could always just zip up the .bmps or whatever the original format is and post 'em, I'll convert them for you if needed :)
-
Alrighty. Made targa's this time.
http://www.filelodge.com/files/room19/512545/warmap.rar

-
what are you using to convert to .dds
whatever it is, make sure its the newest version of it. compression and quality improve with newer versions
i could do it if you like
-
By all means, you probably have more experience at it than me, and my Photoshop plugin seems to behave a bit 'oddly' at times :)
-
I already re-converted them. I'll upload the new VP when I get back home.
-
AAAhh yes. You have mastered the fat man's ripple, applied it to the subspace effect, and converted to dds. Ingenious ;)
-
much better. I too noticed the artifacts.
-
Same as before, just converted from the TGAs this time: a_warpmap.rar (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/misc/a_warpmap.rar)
-
I was looking at the jpeg ones, very nice, i didn't see any artifacting, unless you guys actually used it for a subspace effect yet :)
