Title: Creating a Campaign
Post by: diceman111 on June 10, 2006, 03:02:39 pm
Well I have just finished my mission in the FRED acadamy and now I want to try and create a campaign....
I guess its written somewhere here in the forums how to do that with .vp files and all that but what I am wondering now is what is the best order to start.

For example I have already written the story and 10 missions or something in a word dockument, is it best to start fredding them or is it best create the .vp files and so first.

Since I most likely will use ships from the inferno mod (guess I will have to ask nicely first) as well as others if I find any I am guessing that I will have to create the .vp files first but I am not sure, has anybody a suggestion on what to do first............

I keep forgetting to test that mission. Sorry about that. Real Life has been keeping me busy lately.

VP files have nothing to do with campaigns actually. They are just a container file to help keep things neat and tidy, plus improve load times slightly.

What you need to do is first make the missions, then string them together using the campaign editor in FRED. This editor creates an .fc2 file, which is what tells freespace that your missions are in a campaign and how they are interlinked. Once all that is done, you can then pack the missions and the .fc2 file into a VP if you like, but this part is optional - Though certainly recommended if you plan to distribute it.

Good luck :) If you haven't used the campaign editor before, its use is covered quite well in the FRED documentation. If you don't have an original installation, you probably don't have that, but there's a link to an online version of the documentation and walkthrough on the FRED portal of the Wiki.

I have both the Retail Original And SCP.
I have also used the campaign editor, needed it in order to advance in the Revenge: Final Conflict campaigns, its a really good campaign but lots, lots and lots of bugs everywhere and alot of german in the Missions(When Opening them with FRED) luckily Swedish and German are quite similar and I have studied German in high school so I can generally gus what is needed to change in the missions in order to make em work.
