Title: THQ support :(
Post by: Warlock on November 10, 2001, 06:45:00 am
Well for those that know about the enternal war for support SW's been fighting for since ...what week three when V fell off the wagon,..THQ's been the bigger man and discided to merely cut off the SW VBB....which in my eyes is merely the start. Sad that the last time an Admin even made themselves known there it was saying 'We're going to start supporting SW. Oh and the leagues have been reset again, go start over." Then POOF they're gone and you can't get a reply from one of them if you sent in a million proofs of purchase and one cute blonde!

Not trying to start a rant here,..I know alot of the ppl here aren't even into SW or multiplayer much at all...but this kinna bugs the hell out of me.

Volition never gives the support they promise.

THQ buys Volition.

THQ ignores the players as well.

Now they simply start "pulling plugs" WTF buisness since is this? Do yall know just how many of FS2's online gamers have now sworn to NEVER purchase another Volition product and ALWAYS make sure to talk to person they see looking at one in the store and tell them how the support truely is? I know of at least 15 guys that work in computer and/or games stores and have stated they will talk anyone out of buying a V game now.

I mean its just sad,...they make a hell of a game...but act like 5 year olds when it comes to support.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

You know, I know of one (at least one) really pissed off and annoyed admin who would disagree.  Squad War failed because the people on it refused to play fairly, refused to not cheat, and refused to have any sort of decency or show any self respect to each other and other teams.

If you were running Squad War and saw the kinds of complaints that were streaming in, you'd let it die too.

Now WildWolf and I played SquadWar once...before we lost to the same group who used the lag bomb fire cheat over and over again and we were too honorable to complain about.  And thats the last time I played.

It was a great idea, but V just didn't have the resources to keep it going.  Especially not for free anyways.

So thats what I think of the situation.

my connection sucked so badly i tried playing online once with a ping of 5 seconds and didnt bother after that.

The ONLY place where people treated each other fairly was gamespy, and thats only because most of the people I was playing were semi-pro clan gamers.

The upkeep of game servers like that costs a helluva a lot..homeworld is a prime example.  The game would have taken the world by storm if sierra hadnt been a bunch of greedy morons and decided to stop anyone playing it by themselves on their OWN servers.

This is also the reason the quake/doom games were such runaway successes.

The moral of the story is -
Being posessive and greedy is bad. Period.

If Interplay/V had designed FS to be more openly multiplayer instead of only through THEIR servers, my guess is the scene would be far more alive and kicking.  As it is - its up to us to revive it and keep it on life support, it seems.

We all knew about the cheats,..but mostly all that was really requested from V was clearing of locked matches at times (I mean like my team has a math that's been protested and left for 4 months now by the other team that never even showed up in the first place lol)

But unless Volitions never had an online game in their lives they should have known ppl would always find a way to cheat when the word squad was first placed with the word war. Not dogging them...just saying cheats are, sadly, a part of online gaming  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

But the real kicker was when V Admin actually made the stateement "We fully intend to start giving SW more support shortly,..just please bear with us for a moment' (not word for word...sorry the thread was deleted like 8 months ago I think) but then nothing at all was done with the exception of once in a bit the leagues got reset with little to no advance notice...just POOF you've all got to rejoin. The real SW teams (The ones not running cheat hacks or exploiting holes etc etc) just wanted ...well SOMEthing. It was the entire "Screw you guys I'm going home" attitude that V gave towards the game that killed it. Once it become unerstood V had no itention of so much as even moderating their own BB most of the ppl gave up and all the kiddies went nuts.

You can't tell me SW wasn't a highly loved thing,..we've had teams that look upon others as family..we've got groups dedicated to not only making more TvT missions as well as CoOps,..but getting them Validated by Volition so not only did we get more missions but more missions that "counted" for the ppl wanting points and medals that they kept. We even attempted to set up a method by which to moderate SW between theteams themselves to free Volition from the task for the most part,..setting up an advisory group made from a majority cast from the squads that would look into a problem....then contact Volition with it's findings and comments and request of action so V wouldn't have had half as much BS to contend with. When contacted about it...we were simply ignored. 99% of the time ANYone emailed about ANYthing...they were just ignored.

I know I for one will NEVER again purchase a game that has the V logo on the box  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) I can already see the beginings of the downward Sprial with RF. It's prolly already begun with Summoner.

 (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) Just sad

I don't know about this.  And now that IW2 is out, I don't think I'll be modding anything else for a while after the FS projects I'm working on are done.

lag bomb fire cheat?

Post by: Warlock on November 10, 2001, 03:00:00 pm
It was more of an exploit certain pilots would use to cause multiple bombs to fire at once.

Drop 4 instead of two etc

Wild and I lost many a game to that particular cheat.  No matter how good I was at shooting down bombs, 16 Helios (spread through a few pilots) fired all at once is damned hard to stop.

Warlock, I do see your point.  It wasn't terribly well supported by Volition, but then it wasn't at all supported by Interplay(who gave everyone the collective finger and lies rotting in publisher hell) and its pretty hard to keep something like that running when you've got a relatively small team of guys and building two games.

The world aint fair I guess is the moral of the story.  If it were, SquadWars would be called Squar Wars 2 and we'd be playing FreeSpace 3 or 4 by now  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Yea I know. I'm worink with a few ppl just in case they do pull SW totally to see just what we can create user level wise. Be nice if V would unoffically or offically support the action.

It just kinna bugs you when you go so long not even so much support as a monthly locked match clear up or a little BB moderation,...then you get a "POOF you're being closed" note  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Yeah, I know, it suck when one of your all time favorite games ever written bites the dust because of lousey support.

But, it's to be expected I guess.  Except for a handful of fanatical community members (read: us  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)) the Freespace line has been dead for nearly a year now...

Having a poorly written sequel didn't help matters either  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)  It seems like the developers thought everything that I liked about FS1 was all wrong (probably because it broke so far away from the standard created by Origin systems so long ago, "Col. Blair to the rescue!!!") and decided to "fix" it in the sequel...

On the other hand, it's given us quite a bit of milage for our "Alpha 1, superstar" jokes  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I told you that It ("http://www.geocities.com/jskgames/home.html") would be done by November, well, mostly anyway...

any computer running FreeSpace can act has a game server
you go into multi player settings , uncheck PXO, enter the systems IP (even on that system) and then it can act as the server lister.. just leave it running

We knew this  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

But that's not quite the same.
