Title: To all you veterans.....have I missed the cutscenes bus for FS2??
Post by: Nik on June 12, 2006, 06:29:42 am
It seems all the links I have tried don't work.....I got FS2 from Underdog, and I really need the cutscenes but the main link (freespace oracle) where they are meant to be has exceeded its bandwith! Could any of you guys help me out with getting the cutscenes??? would be really appreciated. I really hope there is still a way to get them cos it would be a shame to miss out on the experience.  Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome Colonal......I stumbled upon FS 2 literally a few days ago.....am ashamed callin myself a long time gamer and I just found this gem....

I used to love X-Wing back in the day, but just from the tutorials on FS2 I could tell this one is smthing special.....so I simply cannot start playing the game proper without the cutscenes!

Most of the good stuff is ingame anyway,
In the meantime, Download the FS port from the main page (http://www.hard-light.net (http://www.hard-light.net)) youll find a link to it,  And play through FS1 (no cutscenes needed) itll walk you into FS2 nicely.

Glad to be of help, however, you don't just unzip them, you have to either mount them as virtual drives (?? i don't know how, but there are way??) or your hard drive or use nero to burn IMAGES to cd's. Note i said Images, not just the files. You may have to convert them to Bin files or from BIn files to ISO's, can't remenber which but I downloaded PowerISO to do this, a free little app, that requests registration, I chose Register later and it all seemed to work fine!

ok so by Images I can just burn these to cd using Nero....after unzipping the files yeah......I suck at this kind of stuff as I was telling Dekker.....I hope this is not too complex a process!  :D

Yeah pretty much! I'm pretty hopeless at this stuff myself, (I searched ages for a site to download the images, until I found that site, Bit torrent wasn't an option for me either). But if you have the latest version of Nero, it shouldn't be a problem. If it complains about file not recognised, (I think my version of nero complained that it required an iso file to burn an image) and what you have is a bin file, you'll need something like PowerISO, which will convert the file for you. I hope you have plenty of HD space, you'll need 1.7gb just for the files your DL'ing then you'll need another 2gb for the conversion process

Good Luck

ahh cool thanks a lot mate....still a bit shaky abt what an image is as opposed to just burning all the files I unzip....sorry abt the barrage of questions, last one i promise!  :)

A lot of the links don't work because we changed servers a while ago, so some of them are dead.

Does anyone know if ShivanSPS's torrent had the cutscenes included?

Read the help files that come with Nero about Cd images, that could prob explain better than I. In fact i'm not even sure you unzip these files? I think they are in BIN format, (a packed file like a zip,rar or cab file), they just need to be converted to ISO format. and then the images need to be burned to CD, like I said, read NERO's help on this, I'm at work, not on my home computer so can't really tell you how at the mo' something to do with an extra button on the toolbar that says burn disk image or summat?

I'm sure it did Flipside, however never used it myself, but I seem to remember it stating it did.

By the way how come I never, ever got a welcome to HLPBB

I cannot believe that all these replies, and no-one has suggested getting shivan's 1.8 torrent. It has all the cutscenes, the FS1 Port and the FS1 cutscenes, along with some of the better campaigns. And it has the Source Code Project upgrade, which this person has not said anything about and he really needs to use if he's just playing FS for the first time, since it makes the whole game look up to date.

BTW Nik, I recommend that if you want to play freespace1 you use the Freespaceport 3.0.3 and the Freespacemissions.vp, just put these in a seperate folder in your FS2 folder and choose them as a Mod

Neo, it seems that Nik is unsure of Bit torrents like myself therefore I didn't recommend Shivans torrent, although this is the best route for a newb I suppose. Can anyone post a link to thread for him to check out! And maybe explain bit torrents for him, I know its summat to do with Emule or summat.
Title: Re: To all you veterans.....have I missed the cutscenes bus for FS2??
Post by: Flipside on June 12, 2006, 09:45:08 am
It's certainly worth getting, but you need to be aware that it's a P2P client, some paranoid types will assume that just because you have it installed that you are using it to download such things as copyrighted movies, music and games, though that's not what Bit Torrent was designed for, that's mostly what it gets used for.

There might be a way of simply getting the movies that I haven't thought of though, and the Torrent would take a good few days to download, it's not as fast as an FTP transfer. Your best bet is to get the Torrent rolling and then, if you get a better option, you can always cancel the download.

See sticky thread at top of page ;)

if you just want to mount the images, download daemon tools, way better than poweriso or nero's virtual drives...

Well, wait till some of the other guys get on, which'll probs be a little later on, hopefully someone will be able to give you a faster way of getting them. The advantage of the BT version is that it contains just about everything, and most of it's the latest version. Though you'll probs need to get the latest version of the .exe file when it's done.

If you have any problems, feel free to ask :)

Look if he really doesn't know much, all he has to do is go to www.utorrent.com and install that (a bit torrent client for windows) and use that to download the torrent, which can be found on this website somewhere. that will solve his cutscene problem, freespace 1 problem, not understanding how to upgrade freespace 2 to SCP problem and it'll make everything look awesome too ;0P

GAAAH!

@AlphaOne, if you haven't seen the FS1 movies,
http://oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/FS1movies/
Take a look at hallfight.avi   Say hi to Carl for me.
FYI FS2 movies are here:
http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/
These are usefull if you're using SCP and don't want to have to have your disc w/you when you play.  Put them in \data\movies if you want to use them.  Also, I wonder, do you use FSPort?  If you put all the FS1 movies into \FSPort\data\movies , then they play when you run the Port as a mod.

Why didn't u use the search function?

EDIT: kara's got'em rared (or has links to whoever did, anyways).  Had to follow my own advice and use the search function.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/movies.html
EDIT2: & he's right, http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/ doesn't work.  I think that's where I picked 'em up from, but it doesn't work now.  Oh well.
