Of course it's historically inaccurate, but I'm just going for the air combat scenes :)
-
Looks good :)
Admittedly, about 80% of air battles in WWI involved a bit of dogfighting till they ran out of ammo, a quick wave to your opponent, and off home again, Air didn't play a particularly big role till late in that War :) But yeah, the combat scenes look good, and I love Bi/Triplanes :)
-
Looks like a good action movie. Hollywood has basically ran WWII into the ground, and some WWI dogfights look interesting.
-
Excellent. Sometimes it seems that WW1 was forgotten. I just hope this movie doesn't end up sucking.
-
All the stories I've ever heard about WW1 aviation were the ones where most of the kills were made by the guy with the 303 in the back seat.
-
That's not true Black Wolf, WWI brought about the advent of the forward firing machine gun and interruptor gear, which allowed the gun to fire through the propeller arc. While early aircraft were mostly tailgunners or just used as observation aircraft, as the war progressed they were used against each other.
-
Hello kids. Today we'll be talking about: What aceofspades Knows About World War I.
-vimy ridge.
-dutch/canada thingie.
-trenches.
-Manfred von Richtofen ( =the Red Baron) and Billy Bishop.

Heh. Let's not forget the early tactic of just using bulletproof propellors........

While it looks like it will be a fun movie...its not likely to be very historically accurate. The planes look great but manuever all wrong...there was only one red Fokker Dr.I flown by a certain ace. Its also odd that some guy is running along a Zepplin like that. I'm sure he's carrying a parachute and manages to survive or something. What I REALLY hope is that we don't end up with the Americans winning yet another war or battle...like U-571 or like what they were going to do with Tom Cruise and a new Battle of Britain movie.
-
Tom Cruise and a new Battle of Britain movie.
Is that the one where he plays an American pilot who crashed his plane on his first flight?
EDIT; slightly unfair. A cursory check reveals he might have shot down a bomber and crashed on his second flight.
-
Damn... that looks like it could be really, really good. Any word on when it's coming out?

Thats the one...the guy he was supposed to play...was one of I think two Americans involved in the RAF doing actual fighting during this time. The guy may have shared a kill on a bomber and later crashed his Hurricane on landing. He died in the crash. Just not the sort of thing that Hollywood would want to make. The guy was one of thousands of unremarkable pilots who died during the time period. Not that unremarkable is bad or that their sacrifice is to be forgotten...just its not something you tend to make a movie about.

Not true, everyone seems to believe it though. In actuality, when Richofen found that the British were gunning for him, he had all of his squadron member's aircraft painted bright red.
-
It's kinda funny too, if you consider that by all accounts Richtofen wasn't impressive in training. He was a mediocre pilot, apparently, but his gunnery could not be matched.
-
Will the movie have Snoopy as the Red Baron? No? Then it doesn't get my money.
-
Snoopy's never been the Red Baron. :wtf:
-
Looks s***. I forsee that it'll likely demoize the Germans for no apparent reason, it'll glorify the hell out of both Americans and WWI Pilots in general when they were shot at by both sides regardless and really didn't do all that much, and having a guy run along a ****ing Zepellin while it's ****ing blowing up is just plain insulting to... well... everything.
Now, what's this Battle of Britain movie with Tom Cruise? It is a joke, right? C'mon guys, that's not funny. It is a joke, right? ...Right?! :shaking:
-
Well, what happened next is Xenu resurected the pilot as a Warrior for Scientology, and armed with the power of Bull**** he uses the Dark Side to overthrow Hitler and replace him.....

My bad, he fought the Red Baron. It's been a while since I read the comics.
-
That scene with the Zepplin looked really nice......
-
That's the way I'm viewing it. Seems like every movie set in the World Wars is 'Based on a True Story', which basically means 'Hey Guys! The World Wars are a True Story!', so I just wanna see the biplanes ;)
-
That scene with the Zepplin looked really nice stupid......
Corrected. :)
-
Thing is, you don't outrun a Hydrogen explosion. Not going to happen. ;)
-
This movie has potential... The only experience I have with biplanes is the game "Wings", ages ago... Never got trought it though, my Amiga died before that. :(
Anyone else remember Wings? It had (well done) dogfighting. The view was behind the pilots head. And when your plane took damage you could see bulletholes appar in the wings, and the pilot could get killed with a lucky shot.
Then there sometimes were these cool topdown bombing runs. Sometimes you just got a picture of the targets before the mission and then you had to remember it when the mission started. Those train beombings were a bit easier though...
And then there were these strafing run missions where the plane would move frome bottom right to top left corner of your screen and there would be a truck convoy or a train with bunch of jerries running around and shooting at you.
The pilot even had developing skills that effect how well the guy could fix his jammed guns during mission for example.
Between mission you could read the pilots (hilarious) diary, and see how the war effected the other pilots.
And even the graphics were awsome.

Well, don't forget Tom Cruise can control the mind of goats, so he probably raised an animal army to singlehandedly topple both Hitler and then destroy Communism, tax inspectors, and psychologists.
-
I remember Wings. It was a fantastic game with bags of atmosphere. Dogfighting was pretty intense since every time you shot down an enemy bip their was a fair chance the thing would go into a death spiral and end up coming back at you. If it collided with you. You died. No ifs. No buts. :nervous:
-
Anyone remember the old game "Red Baron"?
-
That is soooooooooooooo old, like eurofighter 2000 and FA18 hornet 3.0.
(which i of course owned both)
-
I'm getting two things:
- Interesting, WW1 makes a pleasent change of pace from WW2.
- Oh god, it has Americans in it. Sorry guys but I instantly fear this is going to be some gung-ho rubbish, particularly as it's from the director of Independence Day. ID could pull this off because it was a fictional yee-haw US vs the Aliens affair. This is different. I'd rather a Band of Brothers feel than Jawhead in WW1.
-
Well, it looks like typical Hollywood war drivel. Sweeping, dramatic music, inspirations voiceovers, bla bla bla bla. I've stopped caring. Why can't Hollywood make something original, something that has some substance to it, rather tha just the same style that has been used in two dozen other films.
-
They haven't done that since...well, for a full-length movie in something like fifteen years. I can't remember the title anymore, 'twas about the Battle of Britain. (Or was Memphis Belle more recent?) Although technically Band of Brothers is also more recent it's not a movie.
Funny you should mention Red Baron Kosh, I just came across my Aces Collector's Edition CD poking through old CDs. And reminded myself the bugger won't install under XP. Argh.

DosBox FTW.
-
I have DOSBox; it runs very slow, almost unplayable.
-
There are ways to tweak performance and speed. You might be able to speed it up.
