Historical archaeology at Ft. Vancouver: (Vancouver, WA)
The first week of surveying is over. During the next month we'll be excavating the garden area to allow for a reconstruction of the site.
Some photos I took with my crappy, but dirt resistant, digital camera that likely was made in North Korea:

The one on the left is from Portland State, the one on the right from the University of Washington.

The second guy from the UW.

The one on the right is one of my fellow Anthropology majors where I'm going (Washington State University) and the man on the right in the boyscout... ermm park service... uniform is the head of the excavation.

Another pic of Doug, and Beth who is one of his assistants. Beth's been supervising the bunch of us for the last few days and this dig is part of her PhD thesis.

On the left is our sole person from Central Washington University staying here for a month. Very... very sharp person who I like. Of course she also can't keep a straight face when I'm around apparently :p
...and yes the pictures suck because the camera sucks ;)
...and no I'm not taking pictures of myself to show you, afterall you need to have some mystery in your lives...
-
Of course, you realise this will lead to oodles of "WHO IZ TEH HOT CHIK" questions, don't you?
-
OMG WHO SI TAHT HOT CHIK? ;)
Good job doing somthing worthwhile, I should try that sometime.
-
where's a hot chick?
-
Holy crap, I live 30 minutes north of there. Years ago I used to play at that park across the street from Ft. Vancouver all the time.
-

It's all in taste, and I was just commenting on Aldo's question. I'd watch out about saying that, for all you know that could be Ace's girlfreind (I'm not saying it is, I just wouldn't make negitive comments about random people in pictures)

Well if you come by in a week or two you'll see us all tearing up the area ;)
-
I swear I know some of those people...look like fun there. You bums.
-
I live about an hour or two from there.
So tell me, is WSU really the party school people make it out to be?
-
The Pullman campus is, because there's literally nothing to do out there save studying and smuggling beer over from Moscow (Idaho :p ).
You probably do know a few of them if you're a UW student.
-
Anthropology! y4y!

Try UCSD.
-
as I've never heard of Ft. Vancouver, what are you digging up there ?
-
Artillery shells, bricks, fiber-optic lines placed by Comcast that were supposed to be several meters away from where they really are, glass, parts of lead pipes (the one on the right in picture 3 decided to do a 'lick test' when we found it much to the dismay of those of us who knew that it was lead, not copper :p ).
Mostly small fragments from when the US military had a presence there in the mid 1800s. So that was a lead pipe that Ulysses S. Grant was drinking from :p

The place is surrounded by endless fields if I recall correctly. Pullman is a college town pretty much.
At least you can go to Portland down here if you get bored. :D To do what, I don't know...
-
I thought at first that you meant Vancouver BC, where I live... :(

*cue cheesy news music*
Update from the field! (with more crappy pictures, yays!)

The invasion of Portland State University.

The person with the camera here is a filthy dirty member of the treacherous Alliance scum. A Gnome no less. Your noble Orc refuses to give ground to Alliance scumbag! (this individual got permission to stop raiding for a while to go to field school. Kids, hard-core WoW and archaeology don't mix...)

A shot of a nearby excavation unit. (white tent)

An attempt to look serious and busy.

My blackmail image, so when he makes fun of the woman in image 9 about having a 'moustache' of dirt... well... mwuahaha! ;)
-
Sounds like fun. :)
Looks warm there too. Always a bonus. ^_^

Clearly this thread's sole purpose is to show that Ace can both roll Horde and be cozy with females IRL (even if they are the North-Western Hippy Variant.) And with good reason too, because I know I am surprised.
:P
-
Which is the true reason why all of the pimply young men of Terra Firma scream: "NERF SHAMANS!"
But seriously though this one person is such a WoW fanatic that it's... scary... Which is why I avoid the topic and stick to esoteric anthropological debates :p
...and what type of woman would be better, now KT? A southern belle who's only appreciation of cooking is how much barbecue sauce is on it? A Californian with a cellphone in one hand, starbucks in another, another phone set eternally on vibrate, and bubblegum in the mouth all while eating a vegan dish? Or even worse... those damned... wild... Canadian women!

You sick... sad bubblegum fetish man...

Ze bags!

Florida water, circa 1840s. Yes that's right those shmucks had bottled water too... You think you're so freaking special now... pfeh! and double pfeh!
-
The question is - Why would anyone want bottled water from Florida?
-
Ahh, but did they have sliced bread, did they? DID THEY?
