Title: White smoke
Post by: wolf on June 20, 2006, 12:18:39 pm
I get the following effect from places where something was shot:

Is it supposed to be so?

Yes, it's how that blending mode works.  It doesn't work with dark or black images.  A new blending mode has been added to fix this, but the effects have to be fixed too.

On this subject is it possible to have race specific "venting of atmosphere" or explosions?

Ie like in Flancer where the Rheinland craft blew up green,

Yeah, those sneaky germans are breathing methane that colours the explosions green.. :wtf:

I reckon it would be cool to see Damaged Vas craft trailing a light greenish vapour (i know they have been seen breathing O2 in the shiled cutscene from FS1 but  :P

Shivan craft trailing red / purple would be cool also........

And in the briefing cutscene. And the officer exchange program probably wouldn't have happened if the other side had to wear rebreather units all the time. So nothing would be colouring the explosions green. And nothing green would be leaking from the ship.

EDIT: I have seen green explosions though, in my FS1 days... Then I figured out that I had bent one spike from my monitor cable when I had fiddled around with it. The red colour was missing. :D

Well i dunno, the fuel or reacors could be slightly different, Any case it would be a neat feature for race specifics. Mods like B5 and Wing commander /BSG would appreciate it and the casual moder like myself would find a use  :)

It's the athmosphere that colours the explosion. Though I am no expert, but I dare to say reactor fuel has little or no effect on it. And even if it had, why would they use different kind of fuel (if fuel if even used)? Surely everyone would use the best one available. And before you bring up thruster colours, they can be explained by different engine design. Like the mechanics of producing the trust, temperature of the "flame" and such.

Multi coloured ship explosions look weird to me. Weapon effects are another matter alltogether, but for example a green ship explosion looks all weird to me, unnatural. Like in the B5 episode "A View from the Gallery" the alien ships make green explosions (explained by the athmosphere they breath). Sure it was colourful, but it didn't look right...

All that said. I agree that modder selectable explosion effect for ships would be useful.

The reason that we don't support multiple explosion effects is that they are big animations and take up a lot of memory, especially if there are 3 or 4 different types loaded in one mission.  We can tint the same explosion effect to have a different color, but that limits possible options and I don't think it went over that well the last time this topic came up.

@taylor:

Is there a simple way to disable the explosion alltogether for a specific ship ? (ya'know for shadows)

Cant we just set the explosion radius things to 0?

EDIT: sorry... i was thinking about shockwaves....

In fred 2 special exp settings, what about that?
Or is that shockwaves only???

Not sure.  I know that if you set a ship to vaporize then it won't create any sort of explosions when it dies, it will just spit out the normal debris pieces.  I thought that someone may have added something special for shadow vessels at one point, or maybe just talked about it, so there could be something else that I just don't know about.

If we could assign idestructible debris, then the crab model as a whole could be a debris piece. Though some complications might arise when it floats in to something... :nervous:

The vaporize thing sounds a good idea tho... If you mean that what fighters used to to. I imagine a shadow scream and a cloud of black little pieces would be quite an experience...
