Title: Skybox packs....
Post by: Colonol Dekker on June 21, 2006, 08:32:45 am
Has anyone made/Released a skybox pack yet, I cant find any linkage through the search and i  thought it would be nice if there were a few choices available to the community.

Regards.....

Maybe we could collate all the available ones. I dont expect BSG or any big mods to release their work yet. But Nuclear 1's skybox is pretty cool i just wondered how many others were out there and if we could "pack em up for hLP use" maybe?

Just wondering...What's a skybox?  It makes it look like you're flying in the atmosphere / over a planet, right?

*Prepares to be flamed with "You're such a n00b" comments*

That's essentially what a skybox is. They're used all the time in Descent 3; your description is pretty accurate.

Not entirely.  A skybox is, in FS2 contexts, simple a textured cube that acts as a background rather than the 'default' of a bunch of positioned bitmaps.  I.e. rather than shuffling around individual nebula images, etc, to try and get the right background, you simply 'draw all of it'.  It's best/most used for in-atmosphere backgrounds, but not exclusive to them.

So, it's essentally a cube textured with a planet image?

Yes and more, Its used in a similar way to FPS games like HL2 and Q4 etc, But its not limited to a simple sky, Subspace is powered by a type of skybox also.

IF anyone could make a basic community pack in the meantime (with instructions how to use it properly) that would be great!
I for one need it badly...

At the base level, yeah.  Not just a planet image, of course; can be a nicely setup space scene.

I searched my HD and found an old release by Nico (something about an f-22). Gonna see if I can get this skybox thing to work...

you mean his ground test mission? It is quite ugly, but it shows us an array of possibilities :)

I don't think it used a skybox though, just a ground mesh.

it used half-box :) In other words, he used a half sphere to simulate a stormy sky
