Title: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Mobius on June 23, 2006, 02:31:17 pm
They are the most important things in a campaign, but i still don't know how to use them, and expecially where they are!
I'm not interested in granting medals, which may be impossile to use except in the main FS2 campaign, but SEXPs like tech-add & Co. are a must!

Change->Mission & Campaign. For a full reference, run FS2 with the -output_sexps commands line, which will create an HTML file in the FS2 directory listing all existing sexps for that build in their appropriate categories.

If you haven't already I suggest you should read the walkthrough that is available from the FRED help menu.

Either way I suggest you take a look at my FAQ. The FRED sections covers stuff like medals and adding ships and lots of other tricks and tips you'll find useful sooner or later :)

Is this refered only to FS2 SCP or it will work anyway?

That's an SCP only option AFAIK.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?

Considering that my MOD doens't work with SCP...How can I do?
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Shade on June 24, 2006, 03:58:37 pm
FRED section of the wiki has a list of all retail SEXPs, also arranged into categories. They don't all yet include the description that -output_sexps would give you, but some do, and it will at least show you where to find them.

You don't know what is my problem exactly....
There don't have action SEXPs when i open FRED 2!
For example,in the conditionals section I have only when, not when-argument etc.
I don't have SEXPs like force-jump,which are very important!
Neither actions SEXps,like tech-add.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Shade on June 25, 2006, 09:27:23 am
Ah. I see the problem. I think you may have simply misunderstood the structure of an event.

It is as follows:

* Event Name
     -op <conditional SEXP>
          -op <logical or status SEXP>
-op <action SEXP, several of these can be added to one event>

What you're trying to do is add action SEXPs where you're supposed to add conditional, logical or status SEXPs. You simply have to add the action SEXPs in the right place and it will work.

Neither actions SEXps,like tech-add.

Force-Jump is an SCP SEXP. You're not going to see it in Retail. As for tech-add that's hidden in retail. Something I covered in my FAQ.

Ah. I see the problem. I think you may have simply misunderstood the structure of an event.

It isn't possible because I have already created 50 missions and they work properly.
Now I have created a modified ships table file for my campaign...Action SEXPs are required...
I repeat:no sign of tech-add!

So it would seem. I forgot the fact that he's using retail again (nobody ever uses retail though, so I think I'm kinda excused) so it's good that someone didn't... too bad it had to be the invisible bloke though :p

I wouldn't mind but I did answer the question several times in the thread.

Anyway maybe I should be more explicit. The answer is here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/fredretail.html#Medals)
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Mobius on June 26, 2006, 02:15:17 pm
I checked your FAQ.
You say that I have to insert these SEXPs manually(with edit data,I think)but it isn't possible.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Shade on June 26, 2006, 02:18:34 pm
It is for SEXPs that exist in retail, such as grant-medal. You can't do it with SEXPs that are SCP specific such as force-jump, as they simply do not exist in retail FS2 - Even if you went and added them in using notepad, the game would not know what to do with them.

If you wnat SCP specific SEXPs, the SCP is your only option.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Mobius on June 26, 2006, 02:31:49 pm
At the moment force-jump isn't a priority,what I need is tech-add-ships!
I checked Karajorma's FAQ for this,he says that I have just to rename the do-nothing.
But I can't rename SEXPs!I remember I could do this one or two months ago but now I can't!
Maybe it depends from something...
Uhm...I don't use always the SCP,only when I play the main campaign and other no-mod-present campaigns...
But I leave the mediavps folder, the dataold folder with freddocs etc..I simply start FS2 with the normal launcher instead of the SCP launcher. Is this the problem?I should move out all SCP files?
What can I do to make my modified ships.tbl usable with the SCP?(It requires created models too,it's not a simple parameter changing)
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Shade on June 26, 2006, 02:40:50 pm
To rename a sexp, first select it with one click, wait a few seconds, then click it again and you should be able to edit it.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Mobius on June 26, 2006, 02:51:45 pm
Thanks a lot.
And how about the second question?I'm still using the old retail because mods don't work with the SCP...I checked for a SCP compatible version of Inferno and I found it,which means that converting mods is possible. What I wish to do instead?
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Shade on June 26, 2006, 02:53:46 pm
I'm not much of a modder myself so I'm really not qualified to answer that. Hence I didn't. So I'm afraid I'll have to leave it to someone better informed.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?

Check the guide on how to install mods in my FAQ. It's just as applicable when you are the modder as when you're just a player.

The question of how to get FRED to access the mod isn't that hard either. Make a shortcut to FRED. Rightmouse click on it and choose properties. In the target box add -fredhtl -mod NAMEOFYOURMODFOLDER after the path to the FRED exe.

Run FRED via the shortcut from now on.

I just asked this:how to make mods compatible with SCP.With FRED are always compatible!

That's how you install a mod to make it compatible.

What exactly is the problem with using your campaign with SCP? What error message does it show?
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Mobius on July 01, 2006, 05:39:42 am
NAMEOFYOURMODFOLDER can be the mediavps folder? I tried it and seems to work, only with the Scorpion and the Shaitan took from Inferno, a mission crashes when the GVDr Scarab come, but maybe it's just a problem of the Typhon docking bay.
Let me explain,if I can solve a problem here why not two?
In this mission you escort a Vasudan convoy(2 Bes,1 Anuket,1 Ma'at,1 Satis, docked with cargo) to the GVD Inarus(Typhon class). The Inarus arrives when the convoy has done its waypoints.Wings of Astaroth,Shaitan and Scorpions attack the convoy but all proceed as planned, nothing bad with SCP.When the Inarus arrives, more Shivan bombers jump in. The freighters enters its docking bay,the Anuket simply docks with it. The Inarus then launches the GVDr Scarab drones, and then the game crashes. Before playing the mission there aren't messages like(I can't find <nameofthemap>).I think that maybe the cargo units remain inside the docking bay but don't vanish as their freighters. So, when the Scarab are launched, they find this obstacle. In fact,I see just two drones coming out from the fighterbay, instead of 4,just a bit before the game crashes.
What should I do?Set a departure cue for the cargo units, with the Typhon as target?
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: karajorma on July 01, 2006, 05:53:36 am
The easiest way to check what is causing the problem is to make a dummy mission which just has a GVDr Scarab in it and see if that crashes. Then make it appear from a Typhon and check again. Then make it a whole wing and try again.

The problem is that you keep describing your problem with the mission in detail but you never explain how you've got your folders set up. All I know is that you're using mods and that one of them is causing problems. But without an idea how you've set things up I can't tell if you've done it correctly. I need to know what files you've added to a basic FS2_Open install and where you've put them.

The only thing I can gather from what you're telling me that you've installed your mod in the media VPs folder (which is ABSOLUTELY the wrong thing to do if your campaign uses mods).
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Mobius on July 02, 2006, 08:27:42 am
I put all tbl files in the mediavps folder...
At the moment, only the Scarab gives problems, only in this mission at the moment.
I asked for another thing too:a freighter docked with a cargo can depart inside a docking bay?
The freighter vanishes while the cargo remains there. It isn't realistic.

i checked and that's what I put inside:
I added:the Scorpion and the Shaitan from Inferno,a reskinned Iceni(looks Shivan),an Iceni without reskin.I modified the GTD Hades parameters and weapons,I added the scorpionII from a mod changing its name....
The message tbl is almost the same,i just changed the head ani of command(to CM1)
The Species tbl has another text.
THe icon tbl, with the Iceni icon added.
The hud tbl from the ScorpionII mod.

Why not putting mods in the mediavp?Except the Scarab all seems to work well.

What exactly is the problem with using your campaign with SCP? What error message does it show?

Nothing, nothing before the mission and nothing when it crashes. For this reason I thinks its a docking bay problem...

One more thing:I'm using FS2 SCP,but FRED is still not updated.
(In fact many missions I receive don't work)
May it be the problem?

Monumentally bad idea. By doing this you've basically prevented yourself from being able to play standard FS2 missions without them using your tables and you've also hugely increased the chance of breaking any other campaign you install.

What you should have done (as I stated earlier) was to put your mod in it's own folder and then used a mod.ini to point at the mediavps folder. Combine that with a shortcut to FRED and you'd notice no actual difference in the way FS2_Open worked with your campaign will not hideously crippling your own install.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?
Post by: Mobius on July 04, 2006, 11:02:23 am
I played a mission with the Scarab, arriving from subspace. No crashes. So the problem were the freighters' cargo units...
Mod.ini?I have a mod.ini but it's RAR and I'm not able to open it at the moment(I tried to install WinRAR from a CD but no sign of the program, maybe the cd was damaged...)
Another problem emerged yesterday:after downloading the new vps(v.3.6.8,I used the 3.6.7).I placed them into the mediavp folder...
Result:I can't play FS Open!
The tipical messages and the game doesn't work.I read somewhere that replacing new vps requires also a setting change in the launcher.
I checked the FS Open readme, but I didn't found clare references. So,Karajorma, help me another time!

The problem is I can't help you much because I don't understand where you've put all your files. All I know is that you're doing everything wrong :p

Read my guide on how to install FS2 and FS2_Open. Rename your main Freespace 2 folder and then copy the files back over obeying the rules in that guide. Then upgrade to 3.6.9 RC 4. Once you've done that I can help you with problems but while you're installing files in the mediavps folder which have no business being there I can't track down what is the cause of your problem.

li??
The readme said simply "put these new vps into your mod folder, replacing the old ones".I read also that some settings are needed to be changed, more informations were presenton the main FS Open readme but I found nothing.

"Note that some features may require special commands to be activated; see fs2_open documentation for details."

The folder is the mediavps folder.I followed everything to the letter! The games crashes even if I don't put mods in the mediavps folder!
I taled about it with other two italian members-we have the same problem-but at the moment only I tried to solve it.
Ca you give me the exact link to dowload the 3.6.9?Why I cannot resolve the problem with the 3.6.8?

It's not the media VPs that are in the wrong place. From what I understand you've gone and installed your own mod in the same folder. There's absolutely no way I can troubleshoot that kind of set up.

Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?

It's definitely solvable, but without access to your computer all we can give you are tips, not step-by-step instructions.

I posted this in the Release Candidate 4 thread, but I'll post it here too:

Quote
It sounds like you're flailing around, demanding help but not willing to put in the time required to actually figure out what the problem is.

Stop flailing, stop ending every other sentence with an exclamation point, calm down, and think.  Don't post anything for a couple of days.  Read and study karajorma's FAQ; read and study the Wiki.  Use Google, and use the forum search.  Try to work through the problem step by step, calmly and patiently.

If you study your mod setup carefully, keeping in mind everything you know about installing FS mods, you'll have no trouble figuring out the problem.  This isn't rocket science; all it requires is a little thought.

That's how we all became experts on Freespace: we taught ourselves.  If you don't do your own research, you'll never learn anything; and you'll be flailing around all over again the next time you need help. :)

So basically we're trying to solve a problem with the FS2_Open 3.6.9 RC 4 + Zeta Media VPs right?

Cause so far you keep mentioning problems with the scarab and inferno ships and completely confusing me. I presume those have now been purged and we are only dealing with SCP released material.

In that case state your problem again as clearly as you can and I'll give it a go.

Sorry for this.

However, the problem remains, but it isn't a priority at the moment(I found the 3.6.7 mediavps in a remote folder and now I'm using them).

Ok,I have downloaded the 3.6.8 mediavps.I have the 5.3 launcher.Give for sure that I'm not using mods.I put them into my MOD folder(INFR1 or mediavps)but the game crashes when the Freespace 2 SCP view appears. The most common problems regard music soundtracks, textures and advtextures.what I need to do?The 3.6.9 has the same problems? Can I update my 3.6.7 to 3.6.9 directly?

To be honest by this stage I'm completely lost as to what you're doing.

You're going to have to post screenshots of your Freespace2, Freespace2\Mediavps and any mod folders you're using for me to have any clue what to reccomend.

I was saying, problems(or bugs?)like this are common or not?
Other two Italian members had the same problem,I can't believe it's a language setting.
Just tell me,without post a thing, what kind of obstacle we could have.
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?

FS2_Open has got a lot of bugs. It's a symptom of the fact that we don't have enough programmers to stamp them all out and that we often get little help in spotting and quantifying them from the rest of the community.

On the other hand FS2_Open is stable enough to be playable if you do everything right. We're working on improving the programs stability as much as possible. I've certainly found it works well enough that I can play whenever I want. The problems with FS2_Open are down to user error almost as often as due to a bug. That's why I'm trying to get everyone to install everything in one way. The more uniform everyone's FS2_Open installs become the easier it becomes to seperate what's a bug from what isn't.

That's why I've been telling you throughout this thread that you have to install FS2_Open properly. If you don't, if you think that sticking mods in the mediavps folder etc if a good idea then you basically make it impossible for anyone to help you.

Um. What happens? This thread has dragged on so long that it's hard to tell which complain you're making now.

If you're certain that you haven't got any mods interfering with the contents of the main FS2 folder you can try this for me. Run with no mods from the launcher. Then tell me everything that goes wrong.

The most common problems regard music soundtracks, textures and advtextures.what I need to do?The 3.6.9 has the same problems? Can I update my 3.6.7 to 3.6.9 directly?

Everything that you've downloaded with an MV prefix should go in a folder called mediavps. This folder should include, if you've downloaded the entire pack:

mv_core
mv_effects
mv_adveffects
mv_music
mv_textures
mv_models

If you've got anything else in that folder that does not start with mv_, then it has to go. That's what might be causing some problems. Name this folder mediavp.

The Inferno R1 folder should include everything that you plan on using in your mod (changed tables, Inferno VPs, etc.). No media VPs should be put in this folder. Name this folder Inferno.

Open the Launcher and select the Features (or Flags) tab. Under custom flags, copy/paste this exact command:

-mod Inferno, mediavp

Run FS2, and see if you still have problems.

If you're trying to use the 3.6.8 zeta media VPs with an old build it's not going to work. You have to use the corresponding build.

Use 3.6.7 VPs with 3.6.7
Use 3.6.8 Zeta VPs (basically the 3.6.9 beta VPs) with 3.6.9 Release Candidates.

You can not use VP files with an earlier version of FRED on most occassions. That's pretty much what I just said.

As for the SCP launcher you'll find v5.4 in the recent builds forum. You shouldn't be able to miss it. :)

Okay I have downloaded 3.6.8 Fred 2 Open and FS Open from the 17th May CVS thread.
I selected this because I found a link where I downloaded the 3.6.8 mediavps(DUDE-3.6.8 Zeta).I also have the two alpha patches, but of course I need help. How I install them now?
I tried with something fast-and-not-much-effective,but the game reported a dds compression error and all is white.

By now you really should be getting the hang of how to install a build and VPs.

But this sort of thing isn't going to help cause at the moment you appear to be choosing components at random, installing them and then wondering why things don't work.

AFAIK you can only get the alpha patches from the 3.6.9 RC threads yet for some reason (despite me telling you that you should use a 3.6.9 RC with the 3.6.8 Zetas) you've chosen to download the May 17th build instead (which is probably the most bug filled build in the last 4-5 months).

Have a look in my FAQ. I describe exactly how to set up FS2_Open properly in a large amount of detail. Read it. Par your folder down to a basic FS2 Retail install as described and then install only FS2_Open 3.6.9 RC 5. The corresponding FRED2_Open build and the launcher. Nothing else.

If that doesn't give you problems then and only then should you add the mediavps to the mediavps folder.

I don't know...Is there at least a single woman who likes FS?

Yes, there is at least one. My sister.
She offered to test the Steadfast missions. Unfortunately she's only 10...

Ferret does.

Really? I always thought Care-uh-Joar-Muh, but that just comes from everyone abbreviating your name to kara I s'pose.

Well I did invent the name. I can pronounce it how I like :D

Might be nice to get some more female players. We have a few women in the community but not many who actually still play the game.

We want women,so we can talk about beam cannons...uhm...with another point of view...

P.S. Edivad ti consiglio vivamente di diventare un Fan di Karajorma, basta che tu inserisca quello che è scritto qui sotto nella tua firma.Vai a members qui sopra, poi a sinistra cambia la tua  firma e scrivi "Karajorma Fan Club Member"...così siamo in 2!

uh huh... so you think that fixes the problem? I'm still without FS2 because ZmaN's DVD was corrupt, and upon last email, he hadn't gotten the box with more discs to burn it on.

Why you're using this old post?
Title: Re: Action SEXPs?Where?

Why? Because someone posted in here about the intro... and I never got an intro (Kara was the first person to respond to my first post).

Anyways, I'm on nycap RoadRunner from Time Warner Cable. Nycap.rr.com

Ok we won't post much in this old thread.

Uhm,a Karajorma Fan Club member should never say that abbreviation of the nick Karajorma...
In Italian means dear, darling and it's only refered to a female(I posted this sentence 4 times).
We are the only members that will always write the entire nick,so please edit your post.
(Karajorma doesn't care about this,but I do).

Wow,another site that requires donations...
You don't use only Karajorma at all...
Then I have many other nicks...
Leron Anarloke(High Elvish=Francis Sundragon);
Meneldur(High Elvish=Sky Lover);
Superior(Latin=Superior);

LieutenantGeneralMobius is used only here and in GW-Italy,they both talk about wargames.

KoL is probably the only place I don't call myself Karajorma. And donations are 100% optional. You can play the game without ever donating.
