Title: SOUND PROBLEMS- Basic Freespace 2 Installation...
Post by: archangel35757 on June 24, 2006, 10:18:22 pm
  I recently purchased a "new" copy of Freespace2: Interplay 20th Anniversary Edition off of Amazon.  I installed the game today on my computer.  Everything starts out fine, all the sounds initially work.  When I go thru the doors to fly the initial training missions-- the briefing works and I hear the voice giving the briefing.  However, when I commit and begin the mission in the spaceship all game sound goes dead.  There's no music, no sound effects, and there's no one talking to me (like there should be...).  When the mission is over all sound remains dead during the debriefing.  When I go back to the concourse all sound is dead.  What the *$%! is going on?  Can anyone help me get my sound fixed and running properly?  This is a plain vanilla retail installation.  I have not installed any SCP mods.  SOMEONE PLEASE HELP

Machine:
Windows XP SP2
Pentium 4 CPU 2.6 GHz
1 GB RAM Memory
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 4 soundcard (configured in-game using EAX)
ATI Radeon 9600 XT graphics card
Saitek P750 Gamepad (yes- it's an old one.)

I switched to Direct 3D Sound as you suggested and everything works now.  However, my Audigy 4 soundcard supports EAX-- and so does the game.  The game detected it as EAX during my setup.  Like I was saying the sound initially works in EAX and then everything goes dead once I get into the mission and the sound never returns.

Is EAX sound much better than Direct 3D Sound?

I'll continue to play and leave it configured in Direct 3D Sound... I still would like to know if someone can tell me why the EAX option is acting weird.

Thanks again.  :)
