You know, the original Spaceballs really wasn't that great. Sure it had its moments, but for the most part it was sci-fi parody as written by someone who's grasp of the subject consisted of having seen Star Wars. Airplane II was actually a better sci-fi spoof, IMHO.
Besides which, Mel Brooks peaked in the 70s. Check out his Director - Filmography credits on IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000316/). It's pretty much a straight downward slide from the glory of Blazing Saddles to the bland mediocrity of Dead and Loving It.
-
The Producers was made in the 60s. You lose.
-
Ummm... that in no way invalidates anything I said.
-

The Producers was made in the 60s.
You lose again.
-
Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein were better than The Producers.
So, like, **** you.
-
Dead and Loving it was great, I don't know what your talking about.
'
-
Oh yeah, it was just awesome. (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dracula_dead_and_loving_it/)
-

Eloquent.
Blazing Saddles while good runs out of ideas and falls apart at end when it's forced to go with the big fight scene ending.
-
well, given that mel has even more material to make fun of, this might be worth a viewing
-
Eloquent.
Precisely as eloquent as "You lose". And I didn't even feel the need to repeat myself.
I'm still scratching my head over how you think a big fight scene at the end of a western -- a genre practically defined by its use of violence to resolve conflict -- represents any failing of ideas. Does someone need to sit you down and explain what "satire" is?
-
It's not that it has a big fight scene but that it the film was so desperate for an ending that they had to have the cast break onto the set of another movie.
While mildly funny it pretty much shows that Brookes was unable to come up with an ending within the settings of the movie he had made. Not exactly a sign of greatness.
-
Hmmm, I guess you DO need to have satire explained to you.
Blazing Saddles is a deconstruction of the western. It constantly directs little self-aware winks toward the audience that indicate that yes, these characters know they're playing out stereotypical roles. It's full of anachronistic and fourth-wall-breaking lines, from "I must have killed more men than Cecil B. DeMille", to "You will be risking your lives, whilst I will be risking an almost-certain Academy Award nomination for the Best Supporting Actor."
And to top it off, near the climax of the film they build a fake town-- the metajoke being, of course, that the fake town they've built is using the same false fronts as the "real" town in the rest of the film. So when the camera pulls out from the fight scene in the fake town to reveal they're all in the middle of a movie studio -- that it's ALL fake -- this is nothing more than the logical conclusion of the film's overarching theme.
But hey, if you weren't sharp enough to catch that, your loss.
-
I'm well aware of the breakage of the 4th wall throughout the movie. It's just not that funny as an ending though.
Wasn't funny when Monty Python did it (http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/) a year later either.

Make up your mind, Kar. First you say it was Mel running out of ideas, now you're just saying you didn't like it. And now you're dissing Holy Grail as well?
If you're going to participate in threads like this, you need to warn people. Like, put "NOTICE: My sense of humor has a pole up its ass" in your sig.

*sigh*

So having a difference of opinions from you can only be responded to with insults? Sad ZB. Very sad.
Let me ask you this. Why would you end a comedy movie with a final 5 minutes that isn't that funny except that you couldn't come up with anything else?
-
If your budget ran out. :p
-
In some cases I can see that. Not in a case where it would involve hiring hundreds of extras and building new sets just for the ending though.
-

Correction - not funny to YOU. Speak for yourself only.
-
That the film peters out towards the end is a common complaint so it's not just my point of view.
Furthermore you miss the point. I'm not saying that Blazing Saddles isn't funny. I'm not even saying that it's not as good as The Producers. In actual fact I would be hard pressed to choose between them.
What I'm actually saying that there is little to choose in quality between the two and therefore ZylonBane's claim that Mel Brookes best films were from the 70s is a load of ****.
-
My god..... all this simply from a slight date correction. Was quite entertaining but could we please get back on topic?
(Note: In case anyone has forgotten, the topic is "Spaceballs II")
I for one don't think that it is a true movie being made. To learn why I think this, read this article:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceballs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceballs), specifically, the "Sequels" section.
