Title: Buying a guitar...
Post by: pecenipicek on June 29, 2006, 02:43:05 pm
Well, i've decided to get myself an electric guitar, an Epiphone Junior, i've heard from some places its crap, from some its good, but nothing stellar...

it costs around $100, and from what i think, for that price, its an entry-level guitar, and well.. i'm just starting so i dont need anything better. any ideas or advices for me regarding it?

"The Poor can't afford to buy bad quality."

Ie. if you plan not to be a beginner forever, you'll be probably needing a better guitar after some time. Let's say that your first guitar costs this 100 $. Then, after a year, you have to buy another one because the cheap ones quality is not enough any more, and you find a nice guitar that costs 200 $, and buy that. After a while, you have to buy a 300$ guitar... and at that point, you have spent 600 $ on three guitars, when you could've gotten the 300$ guitar in the beginning - or better still, you could've gotten even a very good one for 600 $, instead of a cheap, a better and a good one at that 600 $.

I'd say buy a good guitar if you plan to be playing more than randomly. If you just want to play randomly, that'll be good enough as it'll take you years to actually learn to play by randomly plucketing the thing.  :D With a good guitar, it'll probably be more rewarding and more fun to be a beginner.

And if your interest dies out, you can sell the good guitar for as much as it cost you. Musical instruments don't lose their value, like, say, electronics does.

Don't forget what amplifier you're getting. I myself use a Roland Cube 30 but still using an entry-level guitar atm though.

the fact is, i cant afford a better guitar... :nervous:

i had an acoustic guitar on which i stepped on accidentaly about a month back. that guitar was made before 1914... or somewhere around that time. and it was in the family for all that time... sniff :(

its a better idea for me to get an electric guitar as my parents arent supposed to know i got myself a guitar, and well... when i'll have enough money, i will buy myself a proper guitar, but a priority is getting myself a set of drums. a better guitar can come later.

and Roland Cubes rock :D i got a friend who uses one, but i dont need an amp yet, my PC will do for now...

umm, i'll just plug it in my soundcard. my girl does it that way, and i dont plan any serious playing too much, i'll be happy if i'll manage to get to play it properly.

Well, half the sound of a guitar comes from an amplifier, but I don't know what kind of sounds you get with computer software

well, from what i heard of hers, it sounds pretty much as a clean, non-distorted guitar.

apparently SoundBlaster Live series of soundcards also has some effects... dunno...

Some software can record your playing and play it back as any instrument you want. Synthesized by the computer, of course. If you want quiet, an electric without an amp (or an amp/computer with headphones) is the way to go.

I'm actually looking for a nice Les Paul. How much did it cost and how is its sound?

[By the way, what's the genitive for "it"? "It's" is a contraction of "it is", but is it also used as the genitive?

Looks like a pretty nice guitar mate.

I play a nice Ibaneze acoustic / electric guitar. I'd been playing for a while before then, and knew I was going to continue playing so I invested a little more into mine.

But a nice sounding guitar is a nice sounding guitar. Good luck with it if you grab it! :D

New strings will usually always detune at first. You just have to wait for them to stretch in. :)

And damn that looks like a nice guitar CD... very nice. :D

My guitar looks very similar to this one:

Except it has warmer colour wood, and golden pearl machine heads. :)

I've been learning to play on and off for several years or so, first started when I was a younging because Dad plays, so learnt alot off of him.

I recently (end of 2005) decided I was going to get back into it and be more serious about it so invested in the new guitar. Mine was around the AUS $800 mark with hard case, stand, handfull of picks, tuner, strap, etc thrown in.
It's a really nice guitar and I've definitly had fun playing on it again. (godsend for stress relief during exams etc)

When I can afford to I'm going to nab some lessons at the same place I bought it from too. I want to catch up with a few people too, as quite a few people in the family play guitar or variaus musical instruments much better than I currently do. So I should be able to pick up a few things from them again. :)

Best way to learn new stuff in my opinion is jamming with another player. (who has patience) ;)
