Ok I have the Original freespace on disk and I just recently found this site.
And I have a couple of questions
1) what do I need to play freespace port? Can I upgrade from the original freespace?
2) is it multiplayer?
3) should I burn it onto a disk ?

Gunnery Contol, open fire!
:welcome:
We hope you enjoy your stay at HLP. Exits are located in many different places, however all of them are blocked so they're no good. In emergencies, flamethrowers are located under all seats, but due to budget cuts have been filled with holy water. Other weapons are stored in the lockers, which may only be opened by an admin, :v: god, or hyper-intelligent shade of blue. Do not mention the letters "FS" followed by the number "3", because this makes people very angry. Do not go crawling through any ducts, unless you have a strong urge to have a near-death experience at the claws of Carl, our resident Shivan. If you do meet him, throw him your lunch, he likes that. Thank you and enjoy your stay!
Answers to questons:
1.I assume you mean Freespace 1. Most everything here is used with FS2. To play the Freespace Port you need to ask someone other than me. The only "upgrade" is really the FS2Open engine, visit the Recent Builds forum to learn more.
2. There is multiplayer, but I don't know how it works. Read http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html) for more information.
3. All files available here require no disk burning. Simply keep them in your main FS2 folder.

Thanks I'll keep those things in mind and keep a couple head of Terrain cattle around for sombody's lunch, LOL
Another stupid question, where in the world can I find Freespace 2 at? I found freespace 1 at thrift store.

Please read Karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html). This is your BEST starting friend.
A very very brief intro.
FS2 is the continuation of FS1 but it really has a much better engine. When Volition dissapeared they published the source code of FS2. Since then, SCP (Source Code Project) crew has UPDATED AND ENHACED, (yes in capital bold letters), the game in an incredible way. So:
+ Get original FS2. Install it and patch it to version 1.2. This would be the final retail edition.
+ Get SCP and install enhacements:
- The launcher (latest version is 5.4). Allows you to set game options as example Graphics API (always use OGL although retail FS2 is a D3D game, D3D has no support nowadays).
- The FS Open executable. It's the new exe that replaces retail game. Pick 3.6.9. RC4
- The media vps. They're the enhaced effects, ship models, etc. Latest is 3.6.8. zeta
+ Get the mods you want. Port is an example. It takes FS1 missions converted to be played within FS2.
+ Play, play and play. If you find errors ask for help but remember that they can also be bugs. Post them in Mantis (http://lore.maxgaming.net/~scp/mantis/login_page.php)
I insist, please read Karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html). FS2 open can be a little tricky at the begining. But this game is the best space combat sim ever made. So it's really worth to spend a little of time at the begining till you get used to it.
Enjoy it and ask your dudes without trouble, (but please try searching a little in the Fourms first, take notice that SCP gurus are sometimes fed up of answering the same question again and again). And as previouly said you can ask about anything but FS3 (although with SCP work, Derelict, Inferno and much others, who misses it?)
-
Ok call me a stuipd old man, but I can't find anywhere on teh net to purchase freespace 2, so will the demo and the 1.2 patch work?
-
You question is answered in Karajorma's faq.
-
I musta missed that, I'll go read it again. Thanks for all the help so far guys.

OK I searched teh internet till 3 this morning LOl ( yea, stupid, I know) All I can say is that when I either find the entire file, or finish teh 3 weeks of downloading torrents and combining them, I'm burning this game on a disk and keeping it in a safe place. ( just in case the opporunity to help somebody arises ya know)
-
How the crap are people thinking asking 89.95 or higher for this game is in any way "cool"? That's _well_ over it's original retail price by such a margin as to not even be funny. It'd better come with a lifetime warranty on the cds, latinum pressed box and a fully interactive and indestructable manual. Oh, and a free joystick. Or _something_.

I've seen far worse prices than $90 for FS2.... eBay (enough said).

Don't worry, I used eMule and it took me 4 days...

No the worst part is that a year ago at wa; mart here in Va Beach, I found a set of computer games in the (.(5 rack that contained FS1 and FS2. But at the time I was getting really heavy into targetware ( WW2 multiplayer combat flight sim) so I didn't get it, kicking myself in the arese now, cause after finding FS1 and playing it, dling the FS2 Demo I want he whoe ball of wax game LOL
For some reason teh space games have more intrest than WW2 to me. Probally cause of my age.
-
Ok You guys here might know the answer to this question since the other game I play their all clueless.
I have found a place to downl;oad FS2, but its in 3 rar parts about 688meg a piece. Now I know I need teh disk in teh cdrom drive to play the game, but in stead of a cd is it possible to burn all 3 rar parts onto a dvd in stead, that way I can have everything on one disk?
-
I don't think you should need to burn anything to a CD. Just place everything in the FS2 folder...
-
Oh really? even though their all 3 bin and cue files? This FS2 thing is really starting to get intresting just finding it all, but I'm gonna tell you all right now I played FS1 for a while and its WAY better than the WW2 combat flight sims.
-
You can run .bin and .cue files directly using something like DaemonTools. But it's helpful to keep actual CDs around.
I don't think you can put them all onto one DVD directly; I think you'd have to extract them and move stuff around first.
-
I just got an email from the place I downloaded them from, He said I need to set up a virtual drive and run them with daemon tools. ok I can do this I got a bunch of programs on here that just sit waiting for occosians like this.
But I am putting the bin's on disks to keep safe.
-
Well so much for setting up a virtual drive, computer does not like that one single bit! Guess its time to continue the holy quest for FS2 on a disk like it was in stores
-
Well, I guess try eBay, but keep in mind it'll be somewhere around $80-$100.

Dude... you can burn the .bin/.cue files to CD.
-
I know that, I have them on rewriteable disks right now, only problem is theres 3 seperate disks that are 688 meg a piece, and neither aolchol 120 or daemon tools will work properly on my computer. And without a virtual drive I can only run 2 disk drives at one time, while 3 driver are needed.
-
:wtf: You don't need all three disks in the computer at the same time. Just burn them one at a time.
-

<more like try thrift stores and pawn shops around here. I found FS1 in cash converters for $2, I'm sure that somewhere in the Hampton Roads area theres a store that has FS2

Ok so if I burn all 3 which one do I need in the drive? And where do I keep the other 2 ziped bin files at?
-
You burn each of the three to thier own cd. Then you start with disc 1 to install, go through all 3 discs to install and start the game with disc 1 (or is it 2??)
-
You start the game with disc 2, and disc 3 later on. Disc 1 is just an installation package.
Not that it really matters if you get FSOpen. That will run without any discs in the drive at all.
-
Well gentlemen thank you very much, I have the idea now, and I got daemon tools to work on my system so right now I actually have FS2 up and running :) not bad for an old man huh?
I tried burning it onto 1 dvd, but all that did was make a coffeecup coaster LOL
Its going on 3 disks as soon as I post this, then I'll try runing it without daemon tools and see what happens, but I will have all 3 disks ready if anybody needs the game, I have winrar on my computer and I know of several upload sites that are free, so if anybody new ( like me ) or experienced players needs FS2 email me and I will rar it and up it
email is [email protected]
Thanks again for all the help, I'll be dling the ports and other stuff here soon and try it online :).
( finally a game that I don't fly into trees )
-
You might crash into asteroids though :p
-
I'd seriously suggest installing FS2 and patching it, then burning the installed software (ie, your /fs2 directory) to a disk. SCP doesn't need any retail registry stuff, and the three-disk install is just irritating. I've done a Shivan and burnt a dvd with all the campaigns I like on it, so I don't have to clean install from FS2 disks anymore. :D
-
@Pnakotus: I've done the same thing here. _MUCH_ easier and faster. :)
-

Maybe but at least the people here are more advanced and more likeable :)

I got the patch, I'll redo the disks later on, (rewritables) I got the 3 virt drives on the comp so I don't need thedisks either, I'm just keeping the disks for later use or for anybody else that needs them. I have FS2 on rewritables and FS1 on retail disk.
-
That works too. Copying off a dvd is just a one-step, start-and-walk-away proposition. And you never have to see the appalling splash screens or get assaulted by the preview video again! :)
However, if you want to keep them for others, isn't it easier to not burn them and leave them as images? Who doesn't have portable storage these days? :)
-
Leaving them as images can consume hdd space though for those of us that don't have a lot of flash drives just lying around. Archiving them to cd for later is a good idea as long as the cd's are storaged well. Don't have to worry about magnetics, just heat and humidity (depending on the media used).
-
I got every thing, includeing the opening film, I like watching it sometimes, I'm a game movie fan LOL.
I don't need teh bin files anymore, the 3 disks are the same size as the bin files were, and I can always winrar them
Now fo rthr FS2 port and everything else on the download page :). See you guys online someday soon LOL
-
OK I played it till 1am this morning :) OMG the graphice and detail are freakin GREAT!
Now for the next stupid question from me, How do I play online against others? when I click the online button all I get is a place for a pxo acct login and password
.
-
Kara's FAQ tells all (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html).
-
Thank you, when I tried linking from the faq page, it wouldn't load up, when I use your link it works fine :)
-
Ok I downloaded all the stuff that the faq said to download, but theres no where to make an acct. but I think I made an online game cause I was flying around, but when I try to join a game in multiplayer theres no servers listed, I'm useing the FS2 open cause the Tom's Build did a major CTD.
And teh faq doesn't say weather or not I even have to make an acct anywhere. So am I doing this right so far? if I am where are the multiplayer rooms at LOL.
Believe it or not I'm actually not this stupid, I just usually do the end user thing. This is the first one I'va actually had to do research on. I gotta start flying in FS soon 1 more tree and I'm gona develope a drinking problem.
-
There aren't too many people on-line at the moment. there's a thread (somewhere) where you can announce readiness to play on-line... You'll find out when other people do as well.
-
So I did get everything installed right huh?
Cool, now to dl more stuff and see if I can get it installed correctly, like a sound pack, MS sam isn't excatly my favorite, I like the stock FS2 voice better.
-
So I did get everything installed right huh?
I don't know I'm just assuming you did. :p
-
Wel lI assume I did too cause I don't get any errors at all, but I can tell you this, even if I never find an open room to fly in , with all teh stuff I've got from here, I can run FS1 or FS2 online and still have more fun than MS CFS2 or 3.
