Title: Ever do something so stupid you want to scream?
Post by: wolfen on July 13, 2006, 08:06:22 pm
Well I had everything LOL I was actually done installing and modifing reg entries, had FS1 and FS2 both working with the fs2 port, then I figured good I can uninstall FS1, well, I uninstalled and deleted the wrong folder LOL. I lost the files folders, port launcher, and everything for fs2. Just got done dling everything again that I havent put on a disk yet.

(I feel so stupid I could scream)

Stupid thing I did: to get rid of a virus my computer insisted that I had, I downloaded a mini-program from Symantec to delete it. Well, the virus was gone, but so was a crucial startup file. The computer couldn't start, so there was no way even to reinstall stuff. The drives ended up formatted and EVERY SCRAP OF DATA was lost. I had over 11 Gb of info on it!

The moral of this story is: NEVER use Symantec.

Brother I used to swear by symantec, until I changed hard driver from a 20 to a 120 gig, so I could backup movies, while I had teh 120 in I found NOD32, well the first 120 gig died, so while I was waiting for the warrenty replacement I put the 20 gig back in that had norton A/V on it, I uninstalled Norton and installed NOD32, when I ran nod I found 36 viruses in the system restore files just waiting for a roll back, I havent had a single symantec product on my computer since.

You do know how to completely rid yourself of Symantec stuff right? If you don't I can tell you, uninstalling it doesn't get rid of the stuff in the local settings and regeistry.

Oh heres another thing that makes me feel stupid, I cant get the SCP launcher to work now. Some error about the orange beam and a tbm
Title: Re: Ever do something so stupid you want to scream?
Post by: Dark Hunter on July 13, 2006, 10:59:42 pm
The .tbm is a modular table. It's like an add-on to one of the main code tables. It sounds as though a mod you installed is having a conflict in the weapons.tbl. Can you post the error?

I cant get a screen shot of it, I'd have to write it down, but all the things I dl'd came from here, their the Freespace main campain, the FS2 main Awakeings, and silent threat, I got them all working. I can create a host, but the only thing there is the AI. I'll write it all down and post it on here tomorrow at around 1800 EST.

Hmmm.... must be the Lucifer beam causing the problem. Unsure of which campaign it's from though, I think all of those (except FS2) have a unique Lucifer beam.

So I was wrong.

Subach....... weird. Why the hell would a normal weapon be having problems?
Can you open said table file (use Notepad/Wordpad) and then copy&paste the entry for @subachhl-7?

I'll try to, its been 15 years since I did anything like that. I'll have to do that one tomorrow, though my daughter just called her cars broke down again .

You are using too old build (probably 3.6.7s). Build you are using does not recognize the +nocreate flag. Get more recent build from here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,97.0.html)

For system maintainance I use:

CCleaner
Lavasoft Adaware
AVG Free anti-virus
Microsoft Defragmenter

Ok somewhere along the line I screwed something in FS2 up really bad, I can't get the main hall to come up no matter what I install, move, update, or whetever, so I'm back to square one, the first thing I ever learned about computers is that when all else fails start over from scratch LOL this shouldn't take more than a few dl's cause I deleted everything. Sometimes starting over is the best way.

Nah, I've never been able to get in there either. Blank screen for me too. I wonder if our computers don't have those fonts they warn us about on the page just beforehand?

hi,
i dont like symantec too, but maybe you was to fast to formate your harddrive.
i dont want to make you cry, but if you have in the future the same problem, then its better you know it.

if you have windows XP / 2000 you had start from the cd and theres a repairer which check if all nessacry files of windows there or are the right version.
the second thing is a repair installation.
there installed the installer windows over the other windows and save all settings, the only thing is there you have to reinstall the drivers and updates.

with older systems is there a way too, like win9x, but this is more difficault.

Ok them how do I get the Awakenings voice and music files?
I originally got them from there. And I cant find them on the forums  ( except the link to file planet, a place I'm not subcribeing to for 2 files)
I tried Silent threat, but it ctd du to a lack of something, so I'll deal with that later.
Only files I need right now are the FS1 main and awakenings. I'm going to try my pci file recvoery tool and see if that can undelete them :)
But I used to be able to get on the website with no problem, maybe I have a bug and need to run NOD.

Disregard my last post I can access the freespace port website again :) Got all the files I need again. I might not ever get it to work online, but you can bet I'm gonna have one really big FS2 folder :)

Don't we all...

If you're looking for other good campaigns, I'd point you to Derelict (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=38019.0.html), in my opinion the greatest campaign yet written.

Wow thats a big one, I'm downloading it now, I'll try to get it installed too.
Is this a single or multi player one?
Title: Re: Ever do something so stupid you want to scream?
Post by: wolfen on July 16, 2006, 07:01:58 am
Ok I downloaded all of them. uh...............where do they go in teh main FS2 folder or somewhere else?
Title: Re: Ever do something so stupid you want to scream?
Post by: Dark Hunter on July 16, 2006, 09:02:17 am
They go into their own subfolder within the FS2 folder. They require FSOpen to play. What you do is go to the MOD tab on the launcher, and select the folder you put the derelict files into. It'll load the campaign.

Post by: wolfen on July 16, 2006, 09:50:48 am
Thanks :) I got FS2 open, so I'll make a subfolder and try this out. So far the only thing I can't get to work at all is teh SCP launcher, I dl'd 3.6.7 and tried it but I think I'm missing some files since the only things I've downloaded are from teh Freespace port website and the campaign you linked me to LOL.

Yep I have all the reasons in the world to feel stupid now LO go ahead everybody call me stupid all at once.

I had FS2 installed with the port3_0_3 Awakenings, and Silent Threat, and all the goodies from FS1 all in one folder and for some reason couldn't run FS2Open, well I figured it out.
I now have a FS2Open folder up and runing with FS2_Open.

 :wtf:

Uhhh.... the Port and Awakenings technically count as mods too. They should have their own sub-folder. FS2Open can be put in the main folder.

Post by: wolfen on July 16, 2006, 06:39:12 pm
Really? I got Awakenings, the Awakenings voice file the FS2 Main  that comes with the game, and derelict all in the FS2 folder and they run fine. I found out with Derelict that if I make a subfolder in the main FS2 folder it doesn't run, But so far the only one I can run at all is Silent Threat, so I guess I am learning soimething LOL. I assume I can get on liine again but since theres no game servers found useing the FSopen I guess nobody's on line right now LOL.
Oh the FS_open folder I made doesn't have the FSport in it at all, probally why I can't run Silent THreat. But Hey I got it up and running thats a milestone for somebosy who usually clicks I aggree in the end user aggrement and then clicks finish :)

The windows repair tool only works if the cd's are the windows exe type. some companies like mine ( Emachine) give you a set of 2 cd that have images burnt onto them, theres no windows files when you look on the disks, but when you run setup theres Norton Ghost, that instals windows XP, and trust me from experience, Norton Ghost is harder to get off a computer than a rootkit from Sony.
