Title: HUD resolution and lack of sound
Post by: Insomniac34 on July 23, 2006, 09:38:25 am
sup HL productions. Yesterday, I downloaded Shivan's massive torrent package. It's been running very nicely and I have been enjoying some high quality FS nostalgia. However, there are two problems that I am having at the moment which are pretty annoying and hopefully fixable.

First, the resolution of the game itself is extremely high (1600 by 1200 on Directx 8) and its running very smoothly, mediaVPs and all. However, no matter what resolution I set the game to, my in-game HUD as well as  the main menu of the game is running at an extremely low resolution, as shown in the below screenshot:

How do I make the HUD resolution much, much higher so that the HUD itself is much, much smaller?

And my second problem is that that the charecters have no voices...in the campaign nobody speaks and in the briefings nobody speaks either. There is also a lack of music on the main screen. How do I restore voices and music?

Thanks for the help guys.

Don't run in Direct X for a start. DX hasn't been updated in any major way for over a year and is full of bugs. I'm kinda surprised you've only had the problems you've seen so far. Try OpenGL instead.

You also need to install OpenAL (http://developer.creative.com/articles/article.asp?cat=1&sbcat=31&top=38&aid=46) to get sound to work properly too.

OK...I am now running on OpenGL AND have installed Open AL and nothing has changed...still no music or voices in the game. And the HUD is still huge. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure but I don't think that resolution is supported, you need to bring it down to 1024x768. Also check in your main Freespace folder that you have the tango VP's, I believe these are the voice files (or is it Warble? I always get those mixed up?) Shivans pack is fairly comprehensive and should have these files, but you never know! Are there no voices at all? ie in game, during briefings/de-briefings? Have you checked the sound settings on the launcher. Which version of FSO are you using?

The custom resolutions have worked for a while now. A lot of people are having problems with the audio in general, but the HUD shouldn't look that big.

i cant find any of the VPs you mentioned Wobble in the folder...but I alsocant find any of them available for download. There are no voices at ALL. There is also no music except on certain missions. But no music during briefings or in the main screen. I am using fs2_open_d_20060425_Kara.exe.

That's very strange??? You should have tango1.vp, tango2.vp, tango3.vp and warble.vp in your main Freespace folder! Warble I think is for the music and the tango files are the voice files. I can't understand why they would be missing from Shivans torrent though? Maybe you should PM ShivanSPS regards this?

Stu = Voice
Warble = Music (Think birdsong and you won't mix them up again)
Tango = Command Briefing animations

OK...I am now running on OpenGL AND have installed Open AL and nothing has changed...still no music or voices in the game. And the HUD is still huge. Any suggestions?

See the list of vp files in that pic? You should have all of them in your main FS2 folder (and no other VPs!). I suspect that you're missing Stu and Warble at least and possibly sparky_hi (hence the ridiculously big HUD).

Ah, no sparky_hi.vp  (offhand, that's the file that holds the hi-res artwork; that is, the larger res HUD images used for 1024x768 mode in the retail version).  normally (i.e. sans SCP) you would only have 640*480 resolution available; I'm guessing the SCP is upscaling the lo-res HUD bitmaps, explaining why they're so large for you.

ShivanSPS' package does contain all the VPs so I've got no idea where they could have gone.

You could try reinstalling the game or if you no longer have the torrent you can grab the HotU package (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4150) as that is probably the smallest package that has all the files you're missing in it.
