Ah, well, you got it, but for others who dont know, it's a good bet to go to the FSUP forum and get the media VP, as well as the latest stable build of SCP and you'll be set. Mind, the media VPs are slightly behind the features available.

Checklist for Freespace 2 Open on Windows:
- The Zeta Media VPs, available here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html)
- The 3.6.9 RC 5 and a half release of the SCP[http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/testing/light_test.rar]here[/url]
- The Alpha Fixes, available here (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mv_alphapatch.rar) and if you use the advanced effects VP, (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mv_advalphapatch.rar)
Also, make sure you have the following:
- Recent OpenAL release, available here (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/OpenALwEAX.exe)
- An okay graphics card, available at your local computer store, also available at Newegg (http://www.newegg.com)

Noob question:
What did that OpenAL install do?
-
Installed OpenAL :p
Simplifying a bit, OpenAL is a hardware abstraction layer like OpenGL or DirectX except for sound rather than graphics cards. Without such abstractions you'd have to program for every single sound card that might be present on the system. With OpenAL you give a generic command in FS2 and OpenAL is responsible for figuring out what the commands should be sent to the sound card.
