Title: mediaVP placement
Post by: CFInsane on July 31, 2006, 01:30:40 am
i searched through this forum but i havent been able to find directions on the placement for the mediaVP files.  im not really sure what to do with them to be exact.  i downloaded the recent FSOpen 3.6.9 build and im looking to make the game look better.  i downloaded the "DUDE - MediaVP 3.6.8 Zeta"  files.

Read Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html)

In short:
Create a new directory to the freespace2 root named 'mediavps'
Extract all the mediavp files into that directory
Open FSOpen launcher and click on the mod tab and select 'mediavps' as the mod.

Is the current one just buggered?

EVERY SINGLE FILE gives an error when I try to load it. says
Error: mv_music-mus.tbm(10):
Error: Required token = [#SoundTrack End] or [$Name:], found [+nocreate] .

File:parse/parselo.cpp
Line: 551
[This filename points to the location of a file on the computer that built this executable]

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

..........

ALL of them give that error. I've tried all the various FS_Open exe's I can find, three different launchers...it just refises to work. HELP!

How old build are you using?

Any way get a more recent build. From here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,97.0.html)

More precisely for example this build (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/testing/light_test.rar).... atleast until RC 6 is officially released

Hi, another noob here.

I've been using the official build 3.6.7 for about a year now, and want to use some of the new builds.  I've downloaded OpenAL and the new launcher 5.4, Build 3.6.9, and the Zeta Media VP's 3.6.8 I think it is?

My question is what to do with the patches, mp-710_model and effects...do I just put them in the mediavps folder with the other model and effects vps?

Yes.

VPs are just like zip files which contain game data files. When they are in the same folder they are loaded in alphabetical order and only the first found version of each file is used. So you will notice how mp-xxx.vp goes before mv_xxxx.vp. In this way, the files they contain (fixed or upgraded ones) override all MediaVP's ones. This is how you patch in FS2, you just put the new files in a higher priority place than older ones.

If you want to know more, please read Karajorma's FAQ, (he should copyright it ) and FS Wiki (Moding section and MOD launcher flag help).

Thank you ARSPR!  I've already read through Karajorma's FAQ and the wiki, they were tremendously helpful.  I haven't messed around with stuff in FSO for about a year, so I'm rusty.  I just recently noticed that the Ares didn't have thruster plumes, etc. so I was hoping a more recent media vp pack would fix it.

To quote kara,

You don't need to uninstall an old version of FS2_Open in order to install a new one. Simply deleting\moving the media VPs (but not the standard ones, only the ones that begin with mv_ ) is enough. You don't need to delete the old builds even except to keep things tidy.

In fact although I rarely mention it one of the main reasons I had everyone go over to putting the media VPs in their own folder is precisely because of this. If you have 3.6.7 and want to try out 3.6.9 you simply rename the mediavps folder and make a new one.

Then you can try 3.6.9 normally but run 3.6.7 as a fallback simply by picking that build and running the renamed mediavps folder as your mod.

Quite the reverse in fact. I don't mind other people sticking up parts of my FAQ where ever they need to as long as they don't try to pass it off as theirs.

The FAQ began life as a posting I could simply cut and paste to respond to peoples questions on the VBB when I couldn't be arsed to type out the same answer yet again. Glad to see it's still being used that way :)

Well, I finished setting it up yesterday...and WOW!  The new effects are great!  You guys did a bang up job on this one...plus I have my Ares engine plumes!

Almost forgot to mention, the Hecate is a work of art, truly stunning! :eek2:
