Title: Random Crash
Post by: spearchew on July 31, 2006, 02:50:34 pm
Hello, this morning i finished downloading the shivan full install pack, as listed on one of the permanent threads at the top. I installed everything fine, and started playing fs2 (using the special upgraded graphics etc).

But the game has so far crashed 3 or 4 times. I will be minding my own business playing the game as usual, and then everything will freeze (sound will not cut out, ambient noises etc continue), and the only choice i am left with is restarting the computer.

My launch settings are basically what they were by default. The only change i have made which i can think of is, in game, adjusting the graphics (i think it came under 'details' to be precise) to very high on all options.

So far it has not crashed during briefings or anything, only actually in-game. I did try playing the game on the retail fs2 MOD setting - i cant quite recall if it crashed that time or not, but it was too ugly for me to play!
Any ideas? cheers!

Hi,

Make sure sure you're running it with OpenGL (not Direct3D, which is supposed to be defunc atm).

And..
:welcome:

If that isn't the problem can you run the debug build and then post the last few lines of your FS.log file along with any error messages you now get.

hello, I had it set to D3D rather than openGL i wasnt aware that might cause problems. thanks for the suggestion, i hope it works! Im currently on the other side of the gamma draconis warp gate thingy, in the nebulae. Im trying to take out the erm Ravana, an enemy destroyer... on one failed attempt at an earlier mission i accidentally ordered all the fighters to depart! fortunately i made it through the mission on my own!
Ill report back later with good news i hope!

hello, I had it set to D3D rather than openGL i wasnt aware that might cause problems.

The problem is that we don't know any D3D coders with time to work on the engine. As a result only OpenGL works properly.

Hello.
Switching to OpenGL has apparently worked. The game does crash, and i get an ATI VPU recovery error box, but, despite this (which is rare) the game can continue , it merely pauses itself.
Ive become quite addicted to this game, I've just helped destroy the shivan juggernaut  , but i was told off in a debriefing for taking my time over the 4 front beam turrets. In one mission i used my slow as hell missiles to take out only 2, i just didnt have the firepower for all 4. And in the next mission, where the colossus fights the juggernaut, the colossus didnt take a single hit as i recall! and yet its now having repairs for months
I just dont know what to make of this admiral bosch, maybe he was right all along - i'll find out later !
cheers,

The Colossus took severe damage by overloading its heatsinks. As a result lots of stuff internal to the ship probably melted and needed to be replaced.
