NVIDIA has decided to plunk down a big honking graphics system for professionals only, showing the rest of the world that it's not just playing games any more. The company's latest leap into the graphics stratosphere is Quadro Plex, a dedicated visual computing system that combines up to eight NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics processing units (GPUs) into one, giving its users more graphics power than they can shake a stick at.

Soooo, reckon the interface is standard? If it's possible to use that for games, looks like I need to save up 10 grand...
-
^no it's for rendering movies and stuff...
-
god damn!
its not really for rendiering movies as it is for rendering anything. sure you can use it to play games, but that would be wasting the system's potential. they mentioned flight simulation as being a possible application, which right now is handled by banks of servers. one such server comes to mind, the space ship one simulator, powered by a rack of 13 computers (12 for graphics and one for everything else and as a master server). surly nasa will buy a bunch of theese.

NASA will probably buy these for their space program... In about 15 years :p.

This looks like a cool idea, an extension of the quad SLI concept, although I bet the cards would then tear 8x as fast. Maybe that's not so important in 3D modeling programs.
It might actually not be that great for games though, since the Quadros generally have very low memory speeds compared to the equivalent Geforce cards.

oh my god...
*drooling uncontrolably*
WOW!

they arent made for playing games OR rendering games, quadros were originally made with superior OpenGL speeds compared to gamer cards, to make modelling as pleasing to low end 3D studios. thats my theory at least :p
now, with this... well, it brings movie rendering to small 3D studios. it costs.. what, from $17k onwards? full fledged software like maya will cost more than that in some of its iterations. or am i confusing it with houdini?
anyways, this thingie, paired with nvidia's gelato would be a killer tho :D

well if they can run a flight sim i dont see any reason it cant run doom3, and well. but like i said that would be a waste of its capabilitys. the quad buffered stero would be nice for modeling though. id run 4 projectors (2 per screen) with polarized filters and glasses, would be awesome for modeling.

At last, something that can play Crysis and Fear..................I better invest in a decent cooling solution.

ive been looking over the specs on nvidia's website, that case is pretty much a refrigerator. too bad it doesnt have a place to put your beer.

Thats what my stomachs for.........
