Title: First time in 3D
Post by: Pyro MX on August 01, 2006, 06:57:39 pm
Well, after some reading and playing around with Blender, I finally started a ship. It doesn't have a name and it's not textured (that's why you see mostly a dark silhouette in the picture), but it'll come someday! It's a dropship. Altho it may look small on the picture, it's a heavy ship with big engines (which are mostly hidden by the wings). Originally, it had only 2 wings, but I decided to put up another pair since it was looking odd. It created a similarity with the Geat Fox. :p

The ship looks good, and that big blue thing behind it looks even better.  :p

What is that anyway? It's not any warp or explosion effect I've seen...

That big blue bang is a huge supernova. A new world is born  :D It's done with a custom supernova in GIMP - added a mask to modify the shape of the nova then added some flames that are kinda "engraved" in the whole thing.

hmm, nice. me likes.

as for the ship, post a clay render or a wireframe for us to be able to judge.

That supernova effect, with a little modding, could be made into a kick *** explosion effect in game...

Now the ship:  Looks pretty good, but it bears a strong resemblence to a songbird...

Beware the Canary-class fighter!

Give it some incredible capabilities and people really will fear it, no matter what it may look like.

If you want a XCF (I could do a PSD too, but you would loose the layer modes) with a sample explosion, which is really simple to do in GIMP, I could do it. But I don't know a single thing on how to make explosion effects in FS2.

As for the ship, I know the shape is very similar to a bird. Maybe not a songbird, but I don't remember the name of the one I'm thinking of. Either a turtle-dove or the ones with a huge mouth.

Beware the Canary-class fighter!

Canary-class fighter lol! Funny lol! But it's not a fighter, it's a dropship. :p

I must say there's still much to do on the model, rouding edges, adding detail, weapons and stuff like that.

layer ordering in gimp and photoshop is a bit different and all, but gimp when saving to pdf leaves the layers undivided, so its no problem, you can set the layer order anyways

Ooh! Ooh!! Let's make that the new subspace effect!!

Looks sharp! I know GIMP is able to save as PSD and keep the layer order, but you loose the layer modes  :(. You should try to find the similar modes in Photoshop to have the same effect as in GIMP.

Post by: pecenipicek on August 03, 2006, 10:16:56 am
you got the mode additive, right, i think its one of the overlay modes, pin light or vivid light, i'll experiment some more with it.

as for making it a subspace effect... umm... well, i could try to animate it via rotation...

not going to work as predicted tho from my experience...

There was also "divide" mode if I remember on one of the flames layer.

Send that over to the Upgrade Project.  Maybe they can turn it into a subspace or explosion effect.  That would look reeeeeaaaal sexy in game...   ;7

Hahaha that's true! But when I post the updates of the ship, the interest will surely go back to the ship .

i'll try to make it as an effect myself, for personal use if Pyro doesnt mind? I'll make it publicly availible too if anyone wants :)

Thx! I think it will be a really nice experience!

Here, front view updated.

New canons on the front and new turret guns. The bottom section has now its own wings and trusters so it can fly by itself for a short moment when dropped. Added the holding claws too.

Could you make an explosion effect and a subspace effect?  I think it would make a good "special" explosion.  For example, a unique ship (Sath, for instance) explodes, that would be the explosion effect, rather than the regular one.

Updated the perspective and front views (press refresh it you still see the old ones) and added a ventral view. I changed the materials and started smotthing the ship.

Title: Re: First time in 3D
Post by: pecenipicek on August 05, 2006, 04:10:51 pm
hm, well, the model is improving, but it still... well, the basic shape is still too basic, no matter what you add to the ship, what thingadoodles, its still going to be screaming basic, so you might do something to... well, smooth the ship a wee bit or streamline it...
Title: Re: First time in 3D

I would maybe change the cockpit to something other than purple and make it more translucent.  Maybe consider rounding off those sharp edges, especially on the area near the cockpit and the leading and trailing edges on the wings.  They make the ship look too geometric.

However, that glow effect in the background is god-like.  I just drool looking at it.  I still think it should be made into an explosion or subspace effect.  Maybe both.

*Goes on for pages about the background* :D

Changed a bit the cockpit, tryed to streamline the ship, add a couple of details and make a quick background to show the ship. And I will change that purple later 0 I try to make the reflections work ok with the material. Enjoy!

That looks cool.  Maybe add a couple of turrets to the underside.  That way it could be a dropship or a gunship.

Little progress, I think it's near the finish line... If only the UV mapping could go better (I'm a newb at this lol), I would add textures lol! But for now, I tweak the materials.
