Title: Return of the big ole bastard...
Post by: pecenipicek on August 03, 2006, 09:49:11 pm
Well, i've been revamping the model of TerrAlly's Firefly-class drone destroyer, for the.. umpteenth time now, and, well, here's the newest revamp, i still need to do some greebling, merge the X-positioned wings with the main body and smooth it all properly, all in all, this is a major clean-up of the said model and i'm planning on completely redoing the material to give it more of a.. rough-ish feel. also, before you ask, i am the king of shiny and spiky ships :p

(ignore the beam... i was too lazy to turn it off :nervous: )
Heavy WIP.
[edit] i forgot to add the pic...  :hopping: here it is.

its 5AM and i havent slept all night, gimme a break.

Nice, but is it just me, or is it slightly reminiscent of Nuke's Phoenix-class fighter?

i think it might predate it, i'm working on and off on this model for the past two years. either way, i actually dont know what you're talking about :)

Just from the angle and the carapace-like hull stretching around it what looks like a circle [from this angle] just looks a bit like Nuke's Phoenix, which had a design of a carapace-like circle stretching from the engines to the cockpit.

There we go. Like I said, just a subtle nuance, nothing to derail the thread about... Oops, too late. :nervous;

I say it looks very cool.

Love the angles of it. Too many spaceships have streamlined hulls (I wonder why.... no friction in space).

heh :) thanks :)

people often remarked i did either too shiny or too spikey ships, so i was a little bit worried about this :)

They can look at the Rakshasa, Sathanas, and CommNode and say there is such a thing as "too spiky"... :doubt:

I think that second model (The "Ion Frigate") looks quite good. The first one looks like kitchenware from hell. :P

The destroyer is also good. Kinda like a scaled down Hades, at least that's what it reminded me of.

which iteration exactly?

the one with arseloads of guns or the one with arseloads of lasers which resemble lightsabers? :p
Title: Re: Return of the big ole bastard...

'nother one.

stuff done, merged the aft wings with the main model and vastly improved how the wings connected and thoroughly enjoying the new look.

Nah, it looks brilliant. Would dearly love to get my hands on that thing, write up some table data, and try it out.

How close is it to release-level completion anyway?
Title: Re: Return of the big ole bastard...
Post by: pecenipicek on August 18, 2006, 08:17:51 am
quite frankly, its release ready right now, all i need is render the textures and try to incorporate a 260k poly 16 KM behemoth in FS2 :p

(260k polys with hypernurbs on 2. the control mesh is some 18k i think, and it looks good without nurbs too, however, if its gonna go into fs2, its gonna be helluva lot more optimised.)

16 klicks? Didn't know it was that big.

Well, it is not as large as Inferno's Gigas, so don't worry about FS2 not handling a ship that size.

Yes, please release! That thing looks beautiful.

Post by: pecenipicek on August 18, 2006, 10:03:24 am
what about 18k polys? will the engine handle that on a relatively average machine?

i'm gonna render the textures for this one some time later tho... not today, maybe tommorow.

I like, looks fairly organic in its design.
My critic on it would be to overhaul the textures on it though. Try and ram in some detail and different themes on the areas of the ship.
Otherwise, pretty darn nice.

*Dark Hunter thinks the textures look great and all should ignore Grug.*

quite frankly, the point of this model always was that the texture is a uniform color, without any details sticking out too much

thanks for your support guys :D

well, start of the low-poly version, removed the model from hypernurbs and started shawing off not really visible details.

the plan is to get from 18312 polys down to 15k or less. we shall see how it goes. anyone have any problems with this?

this model is on a wee bit of hold now, as i cant be arsed to trifle with it right now, dont have enough time. we'll see later tho. i think that by the end of september that it should be done...
