Title: Windows 2000
Post by: Vmanlex on November 20, 2001, 03:37:00 pm
I got Win 2k installed on my computer (I Had no choose in matter) and i can't run Freespace 2 above d3d in 640x480. I've got the latest drivers, patchs and DX8, but still nothing.

I've got Ati Radeon 7200 64mb sdr.

Any ideas

Also will this problem happen if i install win xp pro, as XP is based on win 2k.

Just a thought, but high-res art is installed yes?

XP (both pro and home edition) are pretty similar so I doubt that you'd have any problems either way.

FS2 runs fine on Win2000 - at least, it does on mine. I'm using a GF2MX card from Elsa, and I haven't had any problems with one driver over another. I'd say write to ATI if you can't figure it out.

XP technology features the ability to use various compatability modes from windows 95 mode to windows 2000 pro mode, so if it does not work in one mode try another, but it works fine for me and i have win xp pro with a geforce 256 annihilator

Freespace2 doesnt work in hires mode on my machine as well.

And if it doesnt work well on an Oxygen card it probably wont work well on anything.

I think i've got it to work, it seems fine in d3d @ 1024x786 wiv 32 colours, after re-installing drivers again, the only problem is the sound  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif), which i've downloaded the new drivers for it just have to wait until i get home now.

but at the rate i am going i could be installing win xp by the weekend. Just to play FreeSpace.

<- Runs FS2 @ 1024x768 @ 32-bit in Win2k SP2.

Sounds like you either didn't install the hi-res art and didn't realize it or you have some screwy drivers (something ATI is famous for).

More to the point - whats wrong with XP? Theres a thread on this on The Bar but I'd like more opinions (MS Stranglehold on the market isn't a valid answer).

Hey, I like XP...

It's solid as a rock, uses my 640mb of RAM just fine, and my Kyro2 runs like a dream on it. I'll be just fine.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Is there any way i can get my ATI Redeon 7200 to run Freespace 1 or 2 in 3dfx glide or make it belive that i have 3dfx glide on my computer. Coz it keeps telling me that my card is D3D. (Is there any way to test it)

As i am bout to throw my computer out the window.

Edit: I am running Windows XP pro Now

Your card is D3D (and OGL). I haven't heard of any progs or hacks that would allow you to use glide. All (newer) games use D3D or OGL, so why would ATI waste time and money to include support for a 'dead' API in their drivers?
