i downloaded the 3cds of the original retail version of fs2 and i just found out fsopen and i want it. is it possible to download a patch of it instead of the full modded game?

That's where you download the additions for the fso.
Then make sure to also visit the fso build forum @ http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,97.0.html (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,97.0.html)
All other help usually will be found in those forums.

My FAQ has a guide on how to stick that all together and make it work which you really should read if you're going to upgrade retail into FSO.
