Title: May someone help me get a copy of FS2?
Post by: Bob-san on August 09, 2006, 01:53:29 pm
Hey everyone... I know I'm new here, but I gotta big question...

May someone help me get a copy of Freespace 2 without buying it on eBay (i'm not quite 18, and when I am FS2 will probably be $100+ per copy).

I have the Freespace 2 Colossus, but when I got it, FS2 was already unavailable (it came with my cheap ForceFeedback Joystick from Logitech). I really want to play the actual game, after playing the demo at least twenty times over. So, may someone do something for me like (a) sell it to me for cash money or (b) burn me a copy?

Thanks all!

EDIT: The computer I can play the game on has a burner, but is not connected to our junky LAN. This computer has no CD Burner. My flash drive is only about 500mb, so unless someone can make the file properly split and rejoin at the same spot, the flash drive is out.

You don't have a fast enough connection to download it (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38195.0.html)?

My ISP has a bandwith limit of like 1.5GB, and I share my connection with about 6 other computers. My personal game computer has no internet and isn't on the LAN. I could download one or two images, but that would put me too close to the bandwith limit.

You have bandwidth limit for downloading?  :wtf:

I thought bw limits are more like, if you have something on your server, others can DL only limited amount of data per time.

Because, 1.5 GB DL limit (per what time?? A month?) would come full pretty quickly, if you think about it. It's only 1500 MB (or actually slightly different, depending on the type of MB's we're dealing with...)

For example, watching ten stream videos, 10 MB each, would consume already 100 MB of your "bw limit". 15 days of that would already put your internet connection to halt at half a month...

Could you get a confirmation of whether the bandwidth limit is or isn't what you think it is? ;)

ISPs have been doing this as of late, to make more money of course.

Upon memory, the bandwith limit is probably closer to 2.5 GB. My ISP won't pull the connection, but the person who registered the connection works for the company. As he says, the connection is so expensive because 2% of the users use 98% of the bandwith. I was yelled at last time I downloaded 2GB because it was close to the limit.

School starts in about a month, and i might be able to download and burn the ISOs there. The IT person doesn't mind some of it... I just have to be careful when I do it. May someone break up the ISO for each image to be able to be downloaded at about 50kbps in 1-hour intervals?

EDIT: I cannot find a definate limit, though the terms of use say they can CHARGE for excessive bandwidth. No defined "excessive bandwidth" that I can find...

This is why you should skimp on food and get a cable modem... I never regretted it (Well, most of the time :D).

I wish a mod would close this thread...

ZmaN is nice enough to burn the ISOs for Freespace and Freespace 2 (not Silent Threat because I DLed it and it fit on my flash drive) and the files for FSO... and is going to send them to me VIA snail mail...

I have the Freespace 2 Colossus, but when I got it, FS2 was already unavailable (it came with my cheap ForceFeedback Joystick from Logitech). I really want to play the actual game, after playing the demo at least twenty times over.

I have that joystick too.I was lucky:I EBay found FS2 for 2 euros, buying it from an Italian.
I was at school,"now we can use computers, great!"I previously found some FS1 in Ebay, but there were English and over 30 euros.
Then I saw a green-white-red flag,"Oh My God!!!OH MY GOD!!!"and I wanted to buy it immediately.
Damn you must be over 18...then I aked my mother"It's a good game, you visit Sirius,Polaris,Regulus,Antares,Capella, you fight aliens..."at the end I could log in at EBay anq quickly proposed 10 euros for the game(I had to wait 4 days before getting it).
Then after two weeks,WOOOOOWWWW!!!!!
(At the end I paid it 16 euros, including delivery price)

I sometimes think about it...if three years ago I bought another joystick? No FS!It was Logitech, and when I was little I bought a Logitech pad,for this reason I bought the WingMan."Includes 10 full missions of the game FreeSpace 2:Colossus".What a stupid game for a space sim,I thought, but now means PARADISO.

Colossus is a nice introduction to FS2 for a lot of people. It is actually possible to install FS2_Open on it too. I know cause I've tried :D

FS2_Open FTW  :p

My custom Freespace SCP setup is 4 Gigs. That's all the great mod campaigns and everything. Fits nicely on a DVD, and looks great with a modern cards and some 8xS AA and 16x AF :)

I probably got the best deal on it.  I got FS1 and 2 at a garage sale for $2!  I hadn't even heard of it before, I just thought it looked interesting.

Exactly my point.

My problems with the limit is the fact that they are very vague, and can tack on alot of charges if you go "over" the limit. I was told that it was somewhere near 2GB for a upper threshold, before they start thinking of putting charges on it.

Max DL speed is like 5 MBPS, but you never see it. Max I ever really sustained was 1 MBPS while downloading a website. I usually get a speed of 128 kbps for a sustained download.

I deleted it before installing the retail,I thought it wasn't possible...

So?I download files at 10kb/s!

I didn't say that SCP on Colossus was the best way to do things :) You'd still be lacking Tango2 and 3 (so no comm briefing animations) and you also need to replace the main FS2 campaign file or you still wouldn't be able to play any of the missions after The Sixth Wonder.

Not Sixth Wonder, Feint! Parry! Riposte!

Yep. You're right. I thought 6th wonder was the 10th mission for a second.

I guess :v: were hoping that people would confuse Rear Admiral Koth and Bosch and assume the bad guys had been defeated :D

Whats FS2 colossus, Its not in the Wiki..........A lite version?

Basically it's an OEM version that was shipped with various Logitech joysticks. It works perfectly in multiplayer AFAIK but it only has the first 10 singleplayer missions.

Koth wasn't a bad guy...depends on what do you think about his actions...

Yeah FS2C is a lite-version for all intensive purposes. It's stripped down and allows campaigns only, no single-missiosn allowed. Multiplayer works fine from what I hear. It's almost impossible to play user-made games without removing the original campaign.

I had Inferno on FS2C but it got messed up quickly. All ships were replaced, and I ended up having to kill a billion fighters instead of a million cap ships and fighters. It was basically unplayable.

Now that's odd. Colossus has a full copy of Sparky and Sparky_hi IIRC You shouldn't actually need anything else to play FS2 mods. Especially one like Inferno which replaces almost everything.

Not that it's a huge problem really. Everyone should get a full copy of the game rather than playing Colossus if possible.

The problem with Inferno was I didn't have all the ship meshes and textures. The ship-table was incomplete, and Inferno only added on to the ship table.

Sounds like you only had the SCP update and not the full thing or something. Inferno completed replaced the ships.tbl with its own. As long as you had the main Inferno R1 release (AND the inferno SCP update if you wanted to play on SCP Colossus) I can't think of any real reason why you'd get ship errors if you installed Inferno properly.

The ships table from Colossus is the same as it is for FS2. It has to be or you would get hacked tables messages when playing online.

Ah, whatever! I should get the DVD with the ISO's for FS and FS2 and FSO tomorrow, if not tuesday.

I'll play FS1, Silent Threat, FS2, and then replay it all in FSO. That should get me more comfortable with using mods.
