I am def. not new to Freespace, though I am new to Freespace2. It has taken me awhile to get a copy, and now that i have one i see that there are others out there that are just as interested in Freespace as I am. I d/l the new Freespace 2 SCP full pack 1.9 and the new 3.6.somthing update, and I have set all my network connections, however i canot find any online multiplayer servers. I cannot imagine that with this many people into it, there are no servers. If someone could please help me find some so that i can play online it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Eddited: i have read the FAQ on getting started and how to play online, but none of the links in the FAQ seem to work....?

To perform the famous Welcome Beam, type <colon>welcome<colon>, like so:
:welcome:
Furl Hawkens has now been properly beamed!
Einstein needs to work on his speech-writing. I believe someone is compling a list of all welcome speeches written in a thread called "<colon>Welcome<colon>".
Methinks you should check out the famous Karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html).... as I assume the FAQ you are referring to is the one in these forums...?

Go to your data\fs2open_pxo.cfg file and open it in notepad. It should say
66.25.7.157
12000
If it doesn't you have an old one. If you don't have one at all make a new file with that name (be careful it isn't saved as fs2open_pxo.cfg.txt) and try again.
If FS2NetD is failing to log on you'd only see the games on your own LAN which is almost certainly none.
-
yes, the FAQ was the one on this page, and i did not have the config file that was mentioned so i created one with the same title and info, but my online play still will not work. the FAQ in this forum said i needed to create an account "here", where "here" was a link, but the link is not functional. Where do i go and what do i need to do to create this needed acount. Also, none of the movies are working, i have movie sound but no vid, does anyone know how to fix this too?
-
Anyone?.....
-
Hey dude don't expect instantaneous replies!
What version of the movies do you have? MVE or AVI?

it says it will try and conect to the Fs2NetD server, and that if the system hangs it means it cant, then it comes up and says that the conection failed. Ive disabled my firewall and it still wont work. Any sugestions.

If you're geting that message then you're not doing anything wrong most likely. FS2NetD went back up only a couple of weeks ago and still has some teething problems. Most likely you simply connected at a time when the server was being fixed.

i have been trying to connect every 20 or so min for the past 4 1/2 houres and still no go, i can log into my FS2NetD account and see the stats and such, but still no go, is there anythins i need to do?....
-
Well I just checked and FS2NetD is up at the moment so you should be able to connect. Double check your password and username in game. It could be that simple.
-
Is there source code, or a binary of Tom's Build?
-
the improved netcode of newer scp builds is better for online play. It is highly recommended (but not required) that you use a scp build.

you are doing something wrong then. make sure you follow the tutorial to the letter. Any deviance from what is there may cause failure. That tutorial has worked for hundreds of people, it should work for you.

Actually it seems to be down again. I could get to the registration page fine. However, when I pinged 66.25.7.157 in command prompt it gave me four "request timed out" straight away.
BTW, my registration email was supposed to be out two hours ago. Still haven't received it. Oh well... :(
-
Mine ended up in my spam folder... thanks Gmail

Ping is a bad tool for checking if internet servers are up or not as many servers are set to simply eat them without returning anything as a security measure.

Exactly right :)
You wont be able to ping the server.
As long as the stats show up online, the server is 99% likely to be up. When the stats do not show online, the server is most likely down.
-
Hmm, now this is weird. I got the registration email and activated my account, but I still can't log in (it failes exactly the same way like Furl_Hawkens encountered). I've double checked the instruction and my settings in FS2, forwarded the required ports (even opened ALL ports for the server ip), and checked the login and password...nope, still nothing. I can log into the stat page though.
I guess I'll just wait a few more days to try again.
-
you are using a SCP exe right? If you are just using the original .exe it will not work.
-
Yup. I'm using 3.6.9 RC6 with mediavps 3.6.8zeta & all the patches.
-
I think I may have found the culprit. Believe or not, it's FS2 Open.
I just tried connecting to FS2NetD using 3.6.9 RC6 less than 10 minutes ago. As expected, it hanged for a while then gave me the dreaded "connection failed" again. I switched to Tom's build (removing cmdline_fso.cfg in the process because it causes error with the OEB) and tried connecting again. Lo and behold, less than 3 seconds in and I'm looking at the lobby screen. At this point I am really scratching my head wondering what exactly happened. Why can't 3.6.9 RC6 establish a connection while the OEB can? Could it be something I put in the config file?
Just in case, here's the content of my cmdline_fso.cfg:
-ambient_factor 18.3 -spec_exp 16.7 -spec_point 0.6 -spec_static 0.9 -spec_tube 1 -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -2d_poof -missile_lighting -img2dds -no_vsync -cache_bitmaps -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload -alpha_env -mod mediavps
EDIT:
NVM. After some fiddling, it seems that you can't connect to FS2NetD with the media vps activated. Probably something to do with table/model mismatch or whatever. I hope the new PXO would support media vp files though.
-
Finally, after even MORE fiddling, I've definitely found the REAL reason.
There's another fs2open_pxo.cfg packed in mv_core.vp from mediavps 3.6.8 zeta. Unfortunately it's a bit out of date and it contains the wrong ip address for the server. More unfortunate is that the file will overwrite whatever you put in the data folder. That's why even though you have the correct cfg file in place you still can't connect to FS2NetD: the game is trying to contact the wrong ip address. To fix it? Get VPMage and delete the old cfg file from the vp file. After that just add the new cfg file in its place, output the vp file and overwrite the original mv_core.vp. Just deleting that cfg file from mv_core.vp should work, too.
I think I'm going to drop by the upgrade project forum to warn them about this. fs2open_pxo.cfg shouldn't be there in the first place anyway as any server can be subjected to a change in ip address without warning. Perhaps using DNS would be a better way.
-
All you needed to do was copy fs2open_pxo.cfg into mediavps/data/ and that would have made it override the one in the MediaVPs.
-
Oh well, that works, too. :D
BTW, now that we know the deal with mediavps, how do we prevent the modified tables from vp files to get copied over and thus causing the "hacked table" message? Getting the original tables certainly won't help as they will simply get overwritten. Deleting the tables from the vps or putting the original tables in the vp folder isn't an option either since we need the modified tables to take advantage of the files (I think... ::)).
-
That would explain why I had no issues with this. I run without the media VPs when playing online.
Nice bit of sleuthing Me$$enger.
Multiplayer was one of the main reasons why I suggested we all swap over to adding the media VPs to their own folder. Basically if the hacked table warning bothers you can simply turn them off :) Once the 3.6.9 VPs are ready we'll have to see about validating them but at the moment it's simply not worth it cause the new VPs will probably have different ones.
-
Is there source code, or a binary of Tom's Build?
never use toms build, if i could have coded fs2netd to reliably deny connections from tom's build, i would have - it's keeping us from implementing fixes, features, and optimizations
-

it should be unneccesary the server admin *cough*M-P*cough* should be adding the crc's for all the various mediavp revisions to the authorized .tbl's table
-

The MediaVPs use tbms now though, which are automatically invalid.
-
bah.. that's entirely a client side issue in the validation code... shouldn't be that difficult to update
-
I cant make an account... it doesn't load the page like it doesn't exist. Any help with that im pretty sure i can get it working....

The server is down. Don't know for how long though, we'll just have to wait and see.
-
server is now back online, after a brief outage
you will need to download a new config file to play
http://www.game-warden.com/fs2open_pxo.cfg
-
thanks, matthewpapa, apparently that updated config file was all I needed. thanks. Now i'll fix my "hacked tables." just didn't bother until i could actually connect. :D
-
I think the servers down again.
Cant reach www.game-warden.com
-
I guess Matt's dad has been out with the hedge trimmers again :)
-
I can't reach game warden or fs2netd either...
Any idea as to when they will be up again??
-
Game Warden is actually up. They're having DNS problems though so you can only reach them via their IP address.

that works, just a little slow though it seems
what about fs2netd??? I want to play... PLAY!!! lol :D

K, signed up at the site...but no email...
That's a very common problem. To many mail systems, the activation email "looks" too much like spam, and may be automatically deleted. Try signing up a *sigh* different username with another of your email addresses (make sure that the @domain.com is different when you try another).
I signed up with my Gmail account; while the email ended up in my Spam folder, at least I got it.
Also, a suggestion (unconfirmed whether this will help you or not).. the emails come from MatthewPapa07 [at] gmail [dot] com, with a return-path of apache [at] freespaceserver [dot] cjb [dot] net. Try adding both of these addresses to your contacts list, or "safe list" if you have one. It may prevent the email from getting blocked.
-
Alright, I found the email. But I followed all the instructions at the Game-Warden site, but I still can't connect to the server.
-
Hmmm... It may be down at the moment, but I'll wait for someone from GW to confirm that....
-
Apparently it's all working again, and I can access it at http://fs2netd.game-warden.com/
However, I can't login to the site, when I search for myself on the site I don't come up (even though I just registered and activated) and there is no link to register anymore...
I downloaded the new cfg file and tried connecting but FS2 just gives me a "connection failed" error.

The buttons to login and register should only disappear when you are currently logged in. Does your name appear on the FS2NetD page in blue in the top-left above the "Current Users:" section?
I downloaded the new cfg file and tried connecting but FS2 just gives me a "connection failed" error.
Ok, there might be a few things causing this. One possibility: you have a mod active. Solution: either deactivate the mod, or copy your newly updated fs2open_pxo.cfg from FreeSpace2\data\ to FreeSpace2\activemodname\data\
-
Thanks for that, It all works now!!!
Turns out I was logged in like you said (just for some reason my username didn't appear) worked find in firefox though.
I deactivated the FSO mod and now I can actually login in the game. :D
-
The reason why it won't let you log in is because mv_core contains its own pxo_cfg file. If you simply copy the oine you put in your data folder to your mediavps\Data folder as well the problem will go away.
Although you'll get a hacked table message when you try to play online.
-
Although you'll get a hacked table message when you try to play online.
... And it won't save your player stats.
-
Well, I did get the hacked tables message but found a download on game-warden for new tbl files that fixed the problem.
