Title: I think my computer is screwed
Post by: Dr.Zer0 on November 27, 2001, 02:36:00 am
I reinstall windows(98) to try to fix something scandisc found and it dose even worse then ever  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)
My scandisc sayed it found psycal damage to my c drive and it was on WIN386.SWP
so I thought reinstalling would mov the file, it did and now there are no files on that bad sector, but now it keeps saying its out of memorie on bigger programs(RF,FS,ect) when I know I have enough memorie
Now I think techoligy is begining to hate me  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)

Run scandisk again and set it to automatically repair any damage it finds. It's been a while since i used Win9x, but i think you should be able to move the swap-file (win386.swp) to another partition. Not sure thouhg...

If not, there's always trusty old 'format c:'. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

But I did both of those and it dident do anything
Iv even tried closing all the programs I could so that explorer would be the olny thing running but I still cant get much more running  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Right click on "My Computer" and look under I think its called Performance.  See what % of system resources are free.

If you have alot of programs installed then some of them might have allocated some resources to themselves even when they are not active.

The only thing I can think of is to save any imortant files you can (in DOS if necessay) and format your hard drive and start with a fresh system.

Apart from that the only other thing I can think of is that there is a physical problem with your memory and not just your hard drive.

Windows isn't the most reliable system.  I format my hard drive every 2 months and try to avoid installing lots or programs.  Keeps my system running at top speed.

Acctually I just had an idea.  Have you heard of a program called First Aid 97?

Isn't WIN386.SWP a memory management program sort of like EMM386?

I imagine that if your memory management software was scrood up it might cause massive memory leaks.

Kazan or Stryke 9 might know more about this...

------------------
I told you that It ("http://www.jskgames.homestead.com/files/home.html") would be done by November, well, mostly anyway...

well, back-up any files you want to keep and drop the atom-bomb (format drive c).

But if there is physical damage to the hard disk I would seriously consider replacing it ASAP.

Win386.swp is the virtual memory swap file. If it's damaged, winblows may not be able to write or read it properly, and then you're out of virtual memory. Try just exiting to DOS, deleting the file and restarting your system, it should work. If not, go to the virtual memory settings on your System screen (it's somewhere in there) and check the max size of the virtual memory - it should be equal or greater than twice the size of your physical memory (RAM).

why are you running 98 and not 2000 anyway?

if you drive starts developing bad sectors IMMEDIATELY back everything of importance up on floppy or CDR or ZIP and go out and buy a new HDD. cause therres nothing else you can do to save the old one.

Id recommend an IBM deskstar 60gxp or a maxtor diamondmax +60

Agreed- it looks like your hardware is hosed. Abandon ship!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Great excuse for a bigger HD...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

oh yeah, coz Win98 is not a MS prog, now?
If he uses win98, he won't buy another OS, so that makes no difference.
anyway, back to topic:

Even for an M$ product XP is pretty good, the trick is not to pay a cent for it, that way you can see the good in it much more clearly.

no, just one question:
I have a ridiculous pb: once, I started my computer as usual, and I thought out that windows had created a new HD drive, of... 1.91mb!!!
how can I get rid of that ridiculous thing?

Are you using disk compression? If so, that's why- the other hard drive only exists to control the disk compression, not sure about the exact details, but it does.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well if your using 2k/XP, open Disk Management (just open computer managment and look there). You can see all drives and partitions. You can also delete and create partittions, among other things.
Try to remove the small partition and then extened (if possible) an existing one.
Note: see help-file for info on Basic disks & volumes and dynamic disks & volumes. Somewhat over the top perhaps  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

If not, Fdisk or Partition Magic is the way to go.
