Title: Funny moments in gaming?
Post by: IPAndrews on August 15, 2006, 08:20:52 am
Have you played any games that have left you doing the ROFL thing? Any particular moments in your gaming life that stand out in your memory as being funny? Let's hear some good stories. I could do with a laugh.

I don't know about actual in game, but when I first played Resident Evil on the Playstation I jumped that high when the dogs burst through the window that I found I was stood up. Most embarrasing in front of friends. (Although they had played the game before and knew that it was coming! B'Stards)

Carmageddon: Accidentally getting both a Pinball powerup and the one that made your car spontaneously make small jumps at the same time, while going at speed... man, that was hilarious. I swear, there weren't many parts of the map I didn't impact at least once before my car expired :p

Are we talking Monkey Island 1 & 2 here?

I have a fondness for bad AI. There was a sword and sorcery "walking down the street game" called Golden Axe in the arcades. At onc point you'd be on a cliff edge and a couple of skeletons would appear. They'd run at you and you could jump straight up in the air. At which point they'd run under you and straight off the edge of the cliff.

Another demonstration of bad AI was the hopeless goalkeepers in Emlyn Hughes International Soccer on the C64. If the ball skidded to a stop about 3 steps in front of the goalie the AI would get into a pickle and the goalie would start diving left and right like a lunatic. Allowing an opposition player to casually walk up, pick up the ball, and walk it around the keeper into the goal.

More bad AI. The hostages in Counterstrike. See this old movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxq2QbMg-H8

Twisted Metal used to be a good source of laughs. There was plenty you could do in that one. Like driving towards the edge of a building, getting your opponent to follow you, dropping a spring, hitting the brakes, watching your opponent sail over head and off into oblivion.

Then there was North & South. An American civil war strategy game with battles played out as a comic subgame where you could switch between controlling riflemen, cavalry, or canons. Often you'd be down to your last rifleman and despite the odds still end up wiping out the opposing army and gaining victory. Worth a look if you've got a retrogaming mate to play against.

Aye, Twisted Metal was a little gem of a game.

The last time I remember actually laughing hard when it comes to games would be in Starcraft/WC2/WC3 and 'annoying' the units (y'know, clicking them a whole bunch of times and they start saying all sorts of stuff). The Science Vessel and Battlecruiser in Starcraft, as well as the Rifleman in WC3 were probably the best IMO.

Oh yeah. DOTT is one hell of a fun ride. I'm a LucasArts adventure game junkie. Out of all their games though, I have to say Grim Fandango is the best of the best. The style in that game can just blast right through an Ursa. Plus it's really funny in a sensical way. :)

I remember having a few ROFL moments in separate games, but i only remember one.

You know the first Medal of Honor game that was released for the PS1? In the first level of mission 7, i grabbed a bazooka and ran until i saw two Nazi soldiers standing in the tunnel. I took a wild shot and the rocket hit the wall behind the first soldier, and he went flying into his buddy, killing him. :D (i've never been able to duplicate that, though. musta been a fluke)

Multiplayer? Sure why not. On that score I once spent an entire map of Team Fortress following around a guy with a headshot aimbot jumping up and down in front of him to prevent him scoring kills. Childish possibly but very funny and people appreciated my bouncy ass getting in the way of his 200ft instantaneous headshots.

oh yeah. i also remember playing FS1 a few years ago on the mission where you capture the Taranis. Funny thing. I'm the only one left after the hapless friendly AI wingmen got killed by Rama wing. I'm furiously dodging missiles and laser blasts, and 2 scorpions come at me. I dive and they both collide with each other. My brother ROFL'd, i just chuckled.

Well, for a few days during school lunch hour a few years back, I'd play some Super Mario Cart with some buddies.  On one particular race, I was close behind another person... when suddenly I hear the guy who's behind say, "Whoohoo, blue shell!".  I say "Whew, good thing I'm in second." :D  Then I suddenly realize that the guy in front of me slammed on the brakes and was now behind me.  I then fumble for the brake button, shouting "Oh ****!  BRAKE!?  BRAAAKE!!!" and proceed to get nuked in a tasty blueberry-colored explosion of pain.

Also, one night not too long ago, I was playing Descent 2 with some folks (see the superhappy D2 multiplayer fun thread).  I shot this one person, damaging him, and then he started typing.  I was quite nearly dead at the time, myself, and so I decided to just ram into them a few times for the hell of it.  I died in the collision, and exploded.  My explosion killed the other guy, giving me enough kills to be promoted to Commander.  BEST... PROMOTION... EVER!

I think among recent "funny moments," that rapid fire fusion and its massive recoil effect would have to rank near the top. :D

The silkwing cheat in D2's singleplayer is also quite funny to watch. I recently gave that a try again after a long time.

Actually a funny moment in VG history for me would be every single four-player multi game of Bomberman 2 on the trusty SNES. Not at the start but towards the end when there are only 2 left, We are both maxed out on flames and bombs, Dropping em like a donkey with the squits while my tw youngest bros (or whoever was present) is screaming tactics at the top of their meagre little voices

I've never even played the game, and I was laughing so hard I cried. The vacuum cleaner...oh God, the vacuum cleaner.

For me, the greatest funny moment of all time was accidentally ending up in the midst of the enemy Battle Line in NavyField. Now, one of the tactics people have tried to keep the torpedo fiends at bay is to mount torpedo launchers in the secondary slots of ships of the line, instead of AA guns (generally in a no-carriers game), and whenever a torp-heavy ship approaches they all simulatanously launch torp spreads. You get a rather impressive wall of torpedos that tends to keep people from approaching too close.

Well, one time I wasn't really paying attention to where I was going as I manuvered to dodge torp spreads and make gunnery more difficult, and found myself about the middle of the other side's battle line. Two Northhampton cruisers  turn to engage and trigger off two heavy cruiser's secondary mounts' worth of torpedos at me.

In the middle of their own line of battle. Facing into the line in both directions.

They managed to sink each other, and gimped a battleship and three light cruisers. And I, being in the small and highly nimble (or it was before the great nerf) Q-class destroyer, successfully combed the wakes and didn't take a torp hit.

The vengeful fire of that battleship's main battery was another matter, but I had about fifteen seconds to laugh uproariously and get off a spread of torps of my own that finished him off.

In SNES MarioKart Battle Mode I found I could jump Red Shells with the L 'n' R buttons. Didn't always work but it was funny when it did.

SNES Zelda when you pushed a guard over a chasim and they would hang in mid air, legs doing ten to the dozen, before they dropped.

Oddworld: Strangers Wrath is great. Spagetti western all the way. Attack the "civilan" chickens in town and you get a fella on the loud-speaker tellin' you not to be a "punk ass", among others.  Towards the end you fight what appear to be Militant (think James Bond henchmen) Ducks who are like "come 'ere boy, so I can kick yer ass" in pure Texan drill sergant. The weapons too are great. You have a cross bow which fires live ammo. Instead of a Rocker Launcher you have explosive bats. later on explosive bats with dynamite strapped to their heads.

Good job Alpha 2. Good job.

And speaking of Deus Ex, when I was in the underwater stage, and as I was hightailing it out of there, I saw Walton Simons. At first it freaked me out (omg boss) and in my panic I hit the alternate fire on my Assault Rifle and hit him square in the chest with a HE round. Talk about anti-climatic. :P

Dude, you can't call yourself a gamer if you haven't played this at all. And speaking of that, here's the email I sent to that guy: :D

Quote
1: There is a lot of fun stuff to do in the 'Ton hotel map, the second time you go there (when Paul is there and the big fight is about to start). Stand in front of Paul and throw a grenade of some kind towards the bookshelf. Paul will run into the bathroom and then start walking back to his seat. You need to stand just inside the bathroom doorway as he does this. If you are at the right spot, he will bump into you, walk into the open door, and start running. Right after you hear five footsteps, back away. Paul will slide (i.e. move without any leg motion, as if he's standing on ice) out the door and somewhere to the left. The speed of the slide depends on where you're standing and how long you take to back away.

After trying this a few times, you'll probably find that he sometimes slides as far as the closet door but gets stuck on the door frame. If you position the comfy chair next to that door at an angle, he can bypass the frame and slide straight into the closet. If he manages to get to the opposite corner of the closet, he seems to get stuck and just stares at the wall without trying to come out. You can close the door and lock him in there.

This sliding effect can be seen in many other places too, but this is the easiest way of doing it.

2: Make Paul go into the bathroom as before, but follow him inside this time and put the frying pan from the shelf in front of the door, so that it's in his way. When he tries to open the door, he will run in a circle around the pan and make two or three revolutions before sliding off in some random direction. Small changes in the pan's position can cause him to slide in completely different directions. You can add other junk onto the pan to make him run around in various interesting patterns. A fun challenge is to get him to slide into the bedroom or the shower, which is very hard but possible.

3: Same thing as before, but this time, talk to Paul first (to summon the MIBs and troops) before sending him into the bathroom. The grenade explosion will usually attract the enemies' attention. Go inside with him and close the door. He will hear the enemy footsteps, stand behind the door and look down to see where the noise is coming from. Open the door briefly and fire a few shots into the other side. When they fire back, close the door immediately, so that Paul hears the gunfire and gets angry but can't leave the bathroom. When he starts running around, crouch and throw down a scramble or EMP grenade right in front of the door. Paul won't know whether to attack the MIBs or run from the grenade and will vibrate very rapidly as he tries to decide what to do.

4: In the Versalife MJ12 level, the MJ12 troops and the MIBs/WIBs are on different alliance groups and will attack each other if they see the other party shooting. Fire a few shots in the troops' quarters and when they get angry at you, quickly dart into the large lab room. The MIBs and troops will get into a big fight. If you get lucky, it's even possible to instigate the fight without firing any shots yourself; when you release the greasels and the MIBs attack them, the fleeing scientists will occasionally draw the troops' attention.

5: In the same place, find the MIB with the flamethrower and a gas barrel next to him. You can poke a hole in the barrel and if it's in a certain place, the MIB strangely won't notice the gas even though it's hurting him. This is tricky, as you need to position the barrel just right or he'll run away, but it can be done.

6: In the NYC streets map (the first time you go there), fire a gunshot or two in the train station where you start. The bums will all run around each other in a tight circle. Paul doesn't notice or care.

7: There is something strange about the door leading to Manderley's office the second time you go to UNATCO HQ, when Simons is talking to him. It rebounds off anything it hits and JC makes a funny noise when bumping into it. Bring a comfy chair and hold it up as Simons comes out. When he opens the door (notice how he does it), you need to rush inside, put down the chair behind you and close the door before he walks out. Place the chair a little outside the doorway, or else the door will destroy the chair, but not too far since it needs to block Simons from leaving. If you placed it right, Simons will get stuck between the chair and door and repeatedly make the generic pain noise when the door bumps into him. If you really get lucky, you may be able to squeeze behind the door with Simons on the other side, resulting in a continuous chain of loud grunting noises from both JC and Simons and the door rapidly bouncing/vibrating between them.

A metal crate would work better than the chair here since it's indestructible, but I don't think there are any in that level.

8: In the 747 hangar map, after Paul tells you he works for the NSF, fire a few pot shots at the security bot, enough to get it mad at you, and go hide behind Paul. Some of the bot's gunfire will inevitably hit him, causing him to go ballistic and destroy both the bot and any NSF troops he sees. When he has calmed down, he will berate you for "killing" the troops.

9: Go up to a mirror and use a combat knife repeatedly while strafing left and right. It will look like JC is sawing off his own head.

Oh I don't know about not being able to call yourself a gamer, but you are certainly missing out on some good stuff.  Heh, the vacuum cleaner bit was the part that brought me to uncontrollable tears laughter too.  I can tell you'd enjoy this game, maybe even playing it 'properly'.

Bwahahaha!  Good stuff CP5670.  Man, every time I've uninstalled the game thinking I've tried everything, I come across more stuff like this.

That Versalife MJ12 level is just about the Best Level Ever for wacky gunfights.  That large lab area with the Greasels, Karkians, Grays, and a bum all in different holding cells.  And, as you say, the three different 'teams': scientists, guards, and MIB.  The Grays are a little harder to involve in the action because you have to lure them from their large radiated cell to the corridor and then the door.  But once you've done that, hit all the other open buttons and enjoy the chaos.  The flamethrower guys can contribute to the best parts.

The funniest thing is how big a threat everyone considers the captive bum.  He saunters out the opened-by-you door and all the MIB are like HOLY CRAP MUST KILL ... and usually catch quite a few of the scientists in the crossfire. :D

My favorite instance ever involved me opening all the cells as described above, then saving.  From there I made sure to get ALL the scientists and guards in range involved in the action as fast as possible, then quicksaved.  I went on to see funny things, but the most hilarious was unintentional and also quite obvious: upon quickloading, you immediately can see the bum run across the overhead walkway, and right after that, an MIB tears across from the other direction waving his hands in the air ON FIRE!! :wakka: Man I wish I could find that save now...
Title: Re: Funny moments in gaming?
Post by: CP5670 on August 21, 2006, 03:23:59 pm
I've never been able to get the Grays out of their radiation chamber. Even if they're after me, they always seem to wait just inside the door instead of coming out.

That MIB with the assault rifle nearby behaves a bit strangely. He is usually the first one to attack the greasels and the bum, but he seems to only have a single 7.62mm clip and he just runs away from any fighting when he is out of ammo. He may occasionally run all the way to the soldier's quarters, where the troops consider him an enemy and kill him. :D

I think the best place for fooling around is actually the Paul Denton / UNATCO fight scene. A lot of strange things can happen during that. I once had Paul accidentally fall into the elevator shaft while he was fighting. Both he and the UNATCO troops could see each other but their guns weren't in each other's line of fire, so they were just standing there like statues, ready to fire. I tossed one of the comfy chairs into the shaft and it kept bouncing on Paul and hurting him (the walls of the shaft held it in place), so he became angry at me too.

He may also happen to step on the cleaner bot a bit later and quickly destroy it. You can see the same sort of the thing in the Vandenberg base, near the medical bot in the main building. The troops often hit it by mistake and then promptly blow it up.

I've kept savegames at all the funny points in the game, so I can always load one up whenever I need a few laughs. :D

DX Invisible War also has quite a few hilarious parts, mostly with the physics but also the AI. I had a savegame in Trier where all the civilians were afraid of a mouse and were cowering and/or running from it, but overwrote it by mistake.

In the Greasel Pit, in the room with the pool table, there is one bearded bum standing next to a plank-like object on the wall. If you keep bumping into that object, you can make it topple over and fall on the bum. When the bum starts walking around, the plank gets flung away in some direction at a very high speed.

In the Cairo ApostleCorp level, you can bring all the Templar bodies you find to the lobby (there are around 15 of them) and pile them up behind one of the sofas. If you put the utility cart on top of the pile it will bounce a couple of times and then get thrown off, taking several of the bodies with it.

I also like how the Illuminati commandos say "hmm...I am flammable!" when they catch on fire.

As for the ragdoll physics, pictures are worth a thousand words, although even they don't show all the vibrating motion and the bumping sounds: :D

This happened yesterday actually. I was playing the F.E.A.R. Combat with my friends and was runnign towards a doorway. For some reason I decided to throw a grenade into the room, but that plan misfired with a lucky coincidence. The grenade accidentaly hit the wall next to the doorway and that made the nade bounce behind me killing an opponent who was trying to sneak at me from behind.

Needless to say I was unable to play for a moment because of laughing.

I don't know if the X2 developers noticed that the hostile alien race called the "Khaak", sounds exactly like the word "cock".  This makes some of the dialog a bit interesting, to say the least.  A memorable one was "You defend the transporter, I'm going to hold off the Khaak".

Here's one from Starcraft!

You know if you keep clicking on a selected unit it gets annoyed at you? If you click on a Protoss Arbiter enough it'll say: "Want to know the secrets of time travel?"  "Here's you're first lesson.... *rewinding noise*.... Want to know the secrets of time travel?"  :D

Or, in Halo, I managed to make a Hunter shoot an Elite in the back. ;7

The Elite got angry and began screaming at the Hunter, then it stuck a plasma grenade on the Hunter. I was dead by then because I was laughing so hard!

Dude, you can't call yourself a gamer if you haven't played this at all. And speaking of that, here's the email I sent to that guy: :D

Well then tell me where I can get it. :p

You should be able to find a new copy of the GOTY edition for under $10 on ebay. Well worth it for what is in my opinion the best FPS ever made.

As for other funny moments, in FS2 yesterday, I had a Serapis docked with an Argo and fired some morning star shots at the fighter, which caused it to get knocked around as usual, but the Argo moved along with it. :D The game was apparently only considering the fighter's mass for the entire thing and it looked quite ridiculous. This has been around since retail FS2 but is basically a bug, so I'll put it on Mantis when it comes back up.

I don't know if the X2 developers noticed that the hostile alien race called the "Khaak", sounds exactly like the word "cock"

Sounds more like cack to me, and the developers of X2 have a sense of humour most certainly. You're working for a guy called Ban Danna remember?

http://www.nomadtravel.co.uk/store/pages/suppliers/Buff-Bandana-Headwear

All the X series is full of accidental comedy thanks to the Speech system...

'Entering System...Argon Caution, one of your ships is under attack'
'Split now give you Arrrrrrgghh!!!'

I keep on hearing

"Entering System: Autopilot off"

Pure Fs2 moment:

Dogfighting in Into the Lion's Den, the mission where you go beyond the second Knossos portal. An Astaroth was going full speed, over 200 m/s, and ran head-on into a CommNode blade going the opposite direction!

The blade acted like a baseball bat, and that poor fighter stopped dead for about one second, against the blade, then was flung over a klick before it exploded!

Bam, bam, bam... Hey, why is my ship shaking? Must be the discharge... bam, bam... Hey, my health is at 10%! 5%! WTF?  :wtf:

No one's shooting me... Damn! (stops pushing trigger)

There are some awesome Independence War II moments that i had.  Most of them dealing with either megafreighters and/or antimatter pods.

Some funnies include

Tossing a pod of antimatter at 3km/s directly at a megafreighter and watching it explode.  Also known as Antimatter Baseball or Antimatter Bowling.
Leaving antimatter pods at the arrival side of an L-point
Leaving about 30 proximity mines at the arrival side of an L-point
I went hostile to a defense station and the turrets on the station started to shoot me.  Luckily there was a megafreighter that i used to shield myself from the turrets.  That shield didn't last too long, but it was funny while it lasted
Shooting the ass end of a megafreighter and watching it spin as its exploding.
Colliding with planets during autopilot.

Easy money: Wait on a L-point that has lots of megafreighter traffic. Watch how the second megafreighter in a convoy to runs trought its escorts and blows up in spectacular fireball. Go trought the remaining cargo, choose the "lovely loot", and leave the rest for the next mega freighter to run trought. :D

Other funny thing is to see how Jafs has loaded his truck full and gets hit by a ship coming trought the L-point.

I remember in a multiplayer game on lemmings I turned one of my lemmings around on the first level and blew a hole in the bridge my friend had just constructed.

He spent ages trying to figure out why he could hear little lemming death sounds

Ever find the Helicopter where the challenge was to launch a jeep as far as possible ? I spent much time doing that. Especially occupied, hostile jeeps.

Heh, I just recalled a day long ago when I was messing around with "Driver 2".  Well, I was going freeriding through Chicago, and there's these drawbridges, right?

Well, I parked my car exactly in the middle of the drawbridge and waited for it to start lifting up and seperating, and then I jumped out of the car and ran down the side.  The car fell through the gap, and I felt quite proud of shamelessly removing my ride from the game.  ...or so I thought.
I went walking over to an intersection, looking for my next ride to steal, when all of a sudden the car I was about to jack started sinking into the road.  It fell end over end under the ground, and disappeared from view.  I was like, "WTF!?"  :wtf: :nervous:
Soon I noticed that other cars started falling through the ground all around me, and then they'd reappear in the sky and slam into the ground at rather high velocities.  It was totally raining cars!

Edit:  I was *usually* able to reproduce this glitch, too, but sadly I no longer own the game.  If anyone else does, try doing it.  Just note where the center of the bridge is and get the car to fall through the gap when it opens.  *And be sure not to fall to your death, too*
