Anyone know how to turn the .ani files into an animated gif, or an avi?

Hi m8y,

There's a tool floating around called AVIBUILDER32, it can convert .ani to individual .pcx files, which you can then convert to an animated gif in something like Paint Shop Pro's animation doo-dah.

Aniview32 will turn your ANIs into AVI's as well... though it seems to have trouble with quite a few encoders...
