There are some interesting usernames on this forum, I was just wondering how people came by them? My username (Wobble) used to be my nickname when at school, and no I'm not fat, quite the opposite. No, when I was first introduced to a friend he misheard my surname (Worrall) and laughed his head off! It sort of stuck after that!
So come on people tell us why your are who you are!
-
well, back in elementary people started calling me picek, which in croatian means chicken(not as a wuss, but as food), but i was annoyed by that and changed that to peceni picek which means roasted chicken.
whee :p
-
LOL i always wondered, Roasted Chicken, V Nice.
I used to BE JK47 back in the days of an active Squadwar, This was Pre-KOTR as well, My mates used to shorten my name to Jay, and i had an old AK47 my uncle bought back from the first Gulf war so it kinda made itself. Then i was LOA--JK47 (im still on the member list) then i changed to a Wing Commander hard nut in lieu of intermittent service to the SAGA team a few years back.
Then i just kept the current..........

Trying to create an account on Diablo I Battle.net 7 years ago; 'Mephisto' didn't work, 'Mefisto' didn't work, 'Pringles' didn't work, but 'Mefusta' did work. I created an account under 'Mefusta' on HLP, forget the details, and had to resort to my backup 'Mefustae', pronounced 'Meh - fuus - tay'.

I'm the same with the old "used to get called it at school and was called as a joke and to make fun of but it ended up sticking."
I'll never lose it.

Why ferret, I cant help thinking its jumper related.........

Mad fer it?

Do you practice being vague?

My name? Well, I was under the mistaken impression that this is what normal Earth names sound like.

My name? Well, I was under the mistaken impression that this is what normal Earth names sound like.
Yeah, I heard about the accident.
-
I'm a fan of B5. 'nuff said.
-
Mine came from monkey pounding the keyboard in '97 after getting annoyed that every name I was trying on Westwood online was already taken. It's obviously meaningless, but it has stuck. :p
I actually switched to a different name in games several years ago (142857) but still use this on all the forums I'm registered at.
-
Yay Tiberian Sun Multiplayer.........!!
Go GDI!
Actually my name on ehtere was Kanes a C**T but that wasnt appropriate for Forums so i dont use it in that sense.
-

And I thought you were into truncheons!

Herra Tohtori...
That is a character from a Finnish comedy sketch series called Kummeli, which is not unlike Monty Python, though the humour is quite different. Anyway, Once upon a time, I was at school and I posted a message at a certain forum (www.tiede.fi/keskustelut (http://www.tiede.fi/keskustelut), a Finnish science magazine's forum), then I had to come up with a user name real fast, and this just occurred to me. Chances are, if you see someone using the name "Herra Tohtori" in the net, that's most likely me. Haven't seen anyone else using it.
And if you see Trifid Nebula in conjunction with my nick, that's definitely me. :D I use it as my avatar in quite a few places. This is how it looks like...
This is also one of the names that just stuck. It would be awkward to use other user name.
...What does it mean, then? It's Mr. Doctor in English... or Herr Doktor auf deutch. No, I'm not a real doctor. Neither medical or anything else.
Yet.
-
[doctor tran stuff voice]He's a REAL doctor![/doctor tran stuff voice]

Why ferret, I cant help thinking its jumper related.........
Becasue I got told I looked like one at the time. I didn't, but I'm sure it was hilarious for all parties involved. =/

This was actually during the RA 3.03 multiplayer beta period (the final version never came out :p), but I did play TS quite a bit too later on.
-
I got my name from an obscure game called "Freespace 2" where, in this game there is a enemy known as the Neoterran Front. (NTF).
I bet you didn't know that ! ;)

Ransom comes straight out of Hostile Waters. I was very taken by the way he said 'My name... is Ransom' at every opportunity. The idea of introducing oneself after blowing someone up was something I found especially amusing.
Arceihn is just a garbled version of 'arcane' I slapped on the end of it for no satisfactory reason. It's kind of embarassing.

Maybe i should Change my Name to "Mince Pie- Charlie- Jingle Bell"That was my callsign on an xmas manouvre with cadets years back........

Didn't you have that name in the FS1 days too?
And JLS 5.97 rules.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

I registered under this name back in 2002 at DropShipCommand, which is a BattleTech forum. NGTM-1R (which is how it should be properly done; unfortunately most places refuse to allow me then dash or the all caps, the bastards) was the model number of the first BattleMech I designed using the custom 'Mech rules, the Nightmare. (BattleMech model numbers are traditionally related to their name.)
It was the standard 100-ton N00binator Walking ERPPC Battery o' Doom, but I take a small amount of pride in the fact that it was built to Inner Sphere rather then Clan standards. It was a n00binator, but not a munchkin.
Since then I have always used this name, since it's always free.

I started IS. But I eventually moved from the FedCom (felt betrayed by how the FC Civil War ended thanks to Victor) to the Combine and from there to the Nova Cats.

Got mine from Metroid Prime 2. For those who aren't Nintendo fans (your loss!), a character there, Dark Samus, who is one of the coolest-looking villians EVER, is sometimes known as "The Dark Hunter". Anyway, I like the idea of the mysterious darkness, and my playing style on Halo is most definitely a "hunting" style, so I went with that.

Back in '02 I was at a school library and my dad was there to pick me up, I asked him for a german word to use as a password as I was setting up a Yahoo! account. He said "Schwantz" or something which I decided to condense down in "Swantz". After a while I changed the passwords I had used it for and started using it as a username because it was easy to remember.
Also, thanks to my dad's wonderful knowledge of fifty year old German, due to him leaving the country at nine years old, I had no clue of the more modern meaning of the word, which may or may not be "tail" as he suggested.
-
I was 13 or so when I first registered, and since my email already started with nuclear1, I just decided to be oh so original and use that as my username here.
Everywhere else I'm registered as Nuclear, though.

An anime from the late 70's and an impressionable youth are a great combination:
Been using it as my name (either Star Dragon or Getter Robo G) on BBS's and now the internet since 1984?

Schwanz is german and means tail or penis

When I registered at at PXO way back when I used the named "Black Lion". Then, thinking that was my pilot name, tried to log on. But it didn't know the name, so I made a new one, "Blue Lion"
Lo and behold I found out they were two seperate things, I just never got around to changing them.
And no I didn't name myself after the Blue Lions.
(This was all way way back in the day, god I'm old)

A series of books. Fantasy to be exact, which paints a certain image, but, excepting diskworld, its the only one of the type that I read.
Main character from the books, a straight-laced, heroic good guy (at least originally), and probably becaused I'm a straight-laced, boring good guy.
-
Goober changed it.
But why?
-
He always used to go by Raa, but everywhere else, he goes by Taristin.

http://axem.ytmnd.com/
More specifically, I started making up my own sequel to SMRPG and one of the bosses was called Axem Power (cuz he's liek powerful omg). So when trying to register a name on the MSN Gaming Zone (5,000 years ago), all my attempts were taken, so I chose AxemPower. Eventually the Power part was chopped off as everyone just called me Axem (Though I use AxemP if someone's already taken Axem).

Shortly before I joined HLP, I had to pick an internet handle and I picked "Sesquipedalian", for exactly the same reasons that our Sesquipedalian did. And then Sesquipedalian and I registered here and at the VWBB at almost exactly the same time -- three days apart to be exact (check our registration dates). The funny thing was, Sesquipedalian registered here first, and I registered at the VWBB first, so there were two different Sesquipedalians in the FreeSpace community. Then Sesquipedalian registered at the VWBB as Sesquipedalian!, causing even more confusion. :D
Apparently Sesquipedalian had been using his handle for longer than I had, maybe at the VBB or somewhere, so he and I had a chat and I decided to change my username to Goober5000, both here and at the VWBB. I've been Goober5000 ever since. :)
Goober changed it.
I can change it back if you're not happy with it. :doubt:
-
Why don't you just call yourself Goober?
Goober3000?
No, not high enough. Go 5000.
Oh, ok.
<bows>

I don't know where my name came from, but I am very proud of it. It did not come from a weird al song.
-
I even won employee of the month after I put out that grease fire with my face! Yeah everyone was pretty jealous of me after that!
-
Back in -95... or something... out of curiosity I decided to check out some role playing chatroom with a proper nickname. After a short time of thinking and typing some random letters to the nickname box I had a name "Gortef" in front of me, and I was pleased. It has been the same ever since, and as far as I know I am the only Gortef around.
-
a friend introduced me to a Halo group calling themselves the Spartans. They requested a certain format to your user-name: spartan_02(two-digit number). 13 is my lucky number, and I wanted that one, but my friend had already taken it, so I took up spartan_0214. When registering w/ Hard Light, I tried using my alternate, the one I use when places don't let you have the underscore, spartan214, but I was having troubles. Instead of taking time to constantly type in spartan214, I abbreviated it to 214, and couldn't change it to spartan214. . .

EAS Roanoke from B5. I just kinda liked the sound of it. I think it's a valley , or somethin', in America. I actually think I'm due a name change (aka re-register) if only to make some work for Grug ha ha.
Roasted as in Premiership footballer roasted? Oooh-er.
heh heh heh, I think that went over most of their heads.

Roanoke was an island, IIRC, on the north-west coast of the US; it was home to an early British colony where all the colonists mysteriously vanished (there were no sea trips for 2 years to supply the colony, due to war). The only clue was 'Croatoan' carved on a tree (which is the name of a nearby island, but inclement weather meant the resupply fleet never managed to check it).
EDIT; I think it was also a battle in the US Civil War or something.

It was back in the grand old days of the VBB, I'd just finished Freespace and was off to buy FS2 that afternoon. I wanted to get in on the whole fredding side of things so I decided I'd better get about and introduce myself... so I logged onto the the VBB and went to type in usual SN.
Apparently someone had already taken "Dark" and as it turned out, the next four or five names I tried also failed to work, in a fit of dispair I turned to my TV and low and behold, the old WB Batman cartoon was on.
Hence Dark Knight. It came with me to the VWBB and from there to here.

I wonder what happened to that guy. I never saw him around even in the early days of the VBB, but it seems that he was for a long time the only one who knew how to make custom pof models. (that was before we had any pof editors available)

I was trying to be Ironic but forgot to put the "" around the someone. I remember Dark well, he was one of the few who took the time to explain anything to poor little newbie me. He told me how to make custom nameplates for the Orion... he said I could convert his probe to fs2 for use in some campaing or another I was working on with some others that fell apart just as soon as the webpage got finished.
In fact, thats generally whats happened to any campaign I've worked for... no wonder TAP hasn't had a release yet. :nervous:

I probably did, then my Hard disk died of heat stroke a few months back. Sadly, that was my back up hard disk. :(

like most people i pulled mine out of my ass. back when i was in highskool i decided nukebomb was adeq1uit, this was my first screen name. then it became nukebomb overkill. because i wanted it to kcijk ass. but then because its not kvlt to name a band with more than one word, i truncated it to nuke to save m ethe hassel of typung 17 chartacters t log in. this post was brought to you by several shots of vodka!

I have the two Polaris pieces and some of the planets on my old FS1 gaming box. I could get them if you're interested.
-
I have those. I put all the FS1-era models* from Dark that I could find into the Port for version 3. But I'm wondering if there are any models out there that I couldn't find. :)
*except for the planets, but I suppose I could add an optional planet pack if people are interested

Crossposted from another forum:
Back in mid-late '97 I received a beta teaser disk for a game called "Scud, the Industrial Evolution." Scud: I.E. for short. I installed it, it crashed windows 95, and when I was able to play it, I found it to be the most buggy and lackluster software I had ever played. I threw the disk away, and never gave it a second thought. However, the name of the game sounded catchy. With some examination and manipulation of the title, my name was created. So you could say Scud: IE inspired my name. But I'd rather you not :p.
Hmmm... Is 8 and a half years a long time to keep a name?
-
Vega. After the lovely star system that developed the meson bomb and the fastest of the street fighters.
Lately though, I ether go as Arouet (a homage to Voltaire, and I just like the name) or marxharr.

Mine is my First-person shooter gaming alias. *how original* ::)
m can mean a number of things, some of which I prefer not to divulge...
One meaning is "mutant" (See "more proof of evolution (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39227.0.html)" thread 4 more details {if you can find it in there; it's somewhere in the twenty-some-oddth page.})

It's in the North Carolina. So it's located on the south east coast.

I chose Snail because my dad showed me a big Snail, and I was petrified for life. Then again, I was about 3 years old then. :D
And Dark's site is working for me... Does anyone know where I can get the Nirvana? That looked really cool. I think Dark is working in secret on an uber project that will surpass everything ever created to date!! :nervous:

I've had my name for about 6-7 years now. I'm actually quite fond of it. One day my brother came with a new game for his dreamcast called Space Channel 5. He was quite good at it, but I took to it even more than he did and got to be quite adept at it, even better than he was. Anyway, one day playing counter-strike beta 5, I changed my name from Leopard (my very, very, VERY old nickname given to me by a friend's relative, obscure I know) to Ulala, the main character of Space Channel 5. It was meant to be a joke since we all had been playing SC5 so much recently, but then it grew on me. After changing my name that one day, I've never looked back. If you haven't heard or played Space Channel 5, you can find info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Channel_5
The article doesn't make it sound like much, but it was quite fun at the time.
I've also been given the nickname Hyena because one day at a retreat, we were eating morning meal and one of the things we had to do was decide what animal everyone else at the table was most like. Hyena was chosen for me, and it stuck a little, but not near as much as Ulala. I'm willing to go by both, but Ulala will probably stick with me for a long long time.

I remember when we used to farm the "There will not a be a FS3" on the VBB
-
Not as interesting as some of the other names on this board, but here's my story anyway...
Back in elementary school, for reasons that I no longer remember, some of my peers decided to call me "whats-his-name". Then the day came to choose a screename for my IM service, and I decided to use it since I was terribly unoriginal that day. "whatshisname" didn't work, so I took out the H's, and there you have it. :)
I've also used "darkshivan" and "md1032" as screenames for things on occasion. Darkshivan from my love of the night/darkness (and shivans, duh), and md1032 from the callsign of the main character in the Descent games.
-
I remember when we used to farm the "There will not a be a FS3" on the VBB
Haha, the good ol' days. I forgot what we'd even say. DiamodGeezer would get in on it sometimes. Slasher too. I miss those guys. :(

Long story told in short:
I am a great fan of Star Wars and the space simulator games written for it. In X-wing vs TIE Fighter and X-win Alliance, it was said it's impossible to reach the ranking of Top Ace in Single Player, but after months of playing dogfights and missions, I managed to achieve it. I initially wanted to be simply "Ace" when I was to create a login name for myself at HLP, it was taken already. So I stuck the "Top" in front of it and ended up as "TopAce", no spacing between the two otherwise separated words and I kept double capitals.
I've been calling myself as "TopAce" on the Internet ever since. I used to be "Brazil" or simply "Bra" (as a three-letter abbreviation for Brazil), but after two years of learning English, I realized it had an other sense, so I changed it.
-
I remember the old Topace5 trick form the Dos days of X-wing... Stupid Himem <640k
