Its real easy to have planetary terrains and daylight and nightime atmospheres with moons but canyons and realistic ones i think are harder.

Yeah, thats what I gather as well - at least it's harder if you want to have a large land... one small canyon shouldn't be a problem...

bah, I can make a landscape terrain for fs2 in a matter of minutes if you want, with hills, canyons and so on  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

What's it run like? Dramatic slowdowns or anything? Got screenshots?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I wish i could do my other campaign idea  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) .... that was supposed to be totally terain/near planetary combat based.

But I can't be bothered with the effort of organising another campaign.

Yeah! nice one! can you make more pronounced geometry so you can have dogifghts down the canyons and so on? (and could you use sub-objects to blow up mountains and so on?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/devil.gif) )

Nice one!   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

about 15 minutes to model, map, convert, test and take screencaps
otherwise: sure I can make it have more relief, but mountains submodel would look wrong.
the model is quite small, i didn't scale it right, in fact, under the fighter, there's void  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif). Making the model larger would ruin the feeling of smoothyness (?), but I can make it bigger by making landscape tiles, and link them to the main one as submodels  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I guess now you'd want to make the death star trench run  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)

but remember independence day? imagine remaking an old FS1 mission, but in a moon area, and like fly through the canyon with no shields, just the hull runing from manticores in apollos! that would be so cool....! just a though, or howbout land masses, like former planet chunks that blew off a planet or moon. floatnig islands....?

Would need to use smoothing on the terrain geometry.... better for atmosphere-less planets methinks  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

open you eyes dude, the model is smoothed (just look in the target window, more lighning there)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Independance Day? I rather make that triangle tunnel used to enter/exit the giant mother ship (the one as big as a half-moon).  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Now that would be something. Larger asteroids than FS's, like in Empire Strikes Back, one's you can fly close to and even in.

Joe.

not even, but beyond that! asteroids hitting the surface and ur dodgin them in the canyon! escorting a cruiser! remeber that scene in wingcomander (if anyone saw it) where the tigerclaw was in the crater? stealth missions added to it would look soo COOL!

I'll do a larger one, you wouldn't want to use this one.

an even better idea! a long tunel like subspace but extending almost a couple hundred kilometers. a large whole big enough to do evasive fighting menuvers but small enough to be constraining. lets see some squad war guys get a load of this idea! that would be something. ALso, why not make terrain, mixed with a Nebula, making an erie atmosphere effect. that would be something.

UPDATE! I updated the XT-01. I added new subsystems, changed some textures, and is in the process of having its TBL constructed. Only problem is, being that my computer doesnt work, and the computer i have here, isnt idealy a PC Gaming machine, I might see if Mad Bomber can effectivly create the Ship-TBL file, i think i can do it myself, but theres no way to test the ship on my side. so i would leave it up to him or anyone who wants to join in. this situation is going to be as is but until i get that new PCI video card i need...   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) lol... well anyway i am going to upload the old version of the XT-01 with a custom TBL i created at my site soon. its all in a VP file so all u have to do is place it in the FS2 folder, check it out, and then when u want, just delete the VP file. its a small sample, mostly textures. if u notice, that the Hecate looks like the XT-01, its because the texture names are the same as in the standard FS2-VP for textures. the FInal version of the POF and Textures is on its way soon! expect some nice things!
