CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) -- The name of the new vehicle that NASA hopes will take astronauts back to the moon was supposed to be hush-hush until next week.
But apparently U.S. astronaut Jeff Williams, floating 220 miles above Earth at the international space station, didn't get the memo.
Williams let it slip Tuesday that the new vehicle's name is Orion.

Yes, it's true. They're going to really build our beloved Orion ! ;)
-
If only it really were our beloved 2km beam-bristling
hulk symbol of Terran pride! :sigh:
-
they can make it using some fridges.
-
And here I go thinking its the Mech. :(

That is so seconded. Our beloved symbol of Terran Pride!

Meh, they just changed it to Orion because Hypopheralcus was too much of a mouthful.
-
*grumbles* Somebody beat me to it...
Damn those lazy Air Force Colonels butchering the names of honored generals...
-
Well we all know what the theme song will be
duu dunn dunn duu dunn dunn duu dunn duu dunn dunn duu dunn dunn duu dunn duu dunn dunn duu dunn dunn duuuuuuu

All I can think of is the ride of the valkyries, from that flying toasters screensaver, with karaoke text on. Anybody know what I'm talking about?
-
Hang on a sec. They're calling it Project Orion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_%28nuclear_propulsion%29)? :wtf:
-
Wait a minute, this sounds sorta expensive. I mean, correct me if i'm wrong, but shouldn't the US think of paying off it's debts before launching [pun not intended] a big, expensive-sounding endeavour like this?
-
I suppose they'll be using other contellations too, eventually. And that includes the Zodiac signs.
There are a bunch of cool names in the sky that we all know very well...
- Aries
- Taurus
- Gemini - bloody hell, they already used that one!
- Cancer
- Leo
- Virgo
- Libra
- Scorpius
- Sagittarius
- Capricornus
- Aquarius - damn, this one has been also used, it was the LEM in Apollo 13 mission.
- Pisces
That's just Zodiac signs... there are other *familiar* ones, too:
- Hercules
- Perseus (and Medusa's head is part of that constellation...)
- Auriga
- Centaurus
- Pegasus
- Ursa (Major and Minor)
Then there's some that have already been used - Aquila was the LEM of Apollo 11 (Eagle), and Antares (main star of Scorpius) was the call sign ot LEM in Apollo 14 mission.
But on the other hand, they might not care which name is used and which are not. After all, Orion was also the call sign of Apollo 16 Lunar Module. And Apollo 17 LEM was dubbed Challenger, which name was already re-used later on.
And of course we already have an Arcadia Installation here in Finland...
Btw, has anybody thought that it's actualyl quite a pun that Perseus, the advanced interceptor, is meant to kill bombers, and one bomber is named Medusa, who as a mythical character was killed by the original Perseus? :D
And talking about the original Orion Project... It'd be so cool if they finally utilized nuclear propulsion in their lunar crafts, but I doubt that's going to happen. So, unless the new craft uses nuclear propulsion, I suppose the original Project Orion is shleved and the project name has been taken into use by another project. :(
EDIT: And by the Lords of Kobol, of course they are going to name the rockets for manned and cargo Orion Ares I and Ares V... How do I get an impression that generic names are popular in space adminstration?

Let's sell the ****in shuttles at an international garage sale to somone who will actually use them.
-
I heard something about an ares ship... wait a sec
Aha, NASA is building a base on the moon! Or plans to...
Ah, the next gen space shuttle will be the Ares. Well, it'll turn like a potato....

Maybe they're hoping to find some natural resources or something?

lol. "Sceintists have recently discovered oil on the moon! Scentists were looking for life supporting water but no one was expecting something THIS much better!"

Didn't Atlantis call the name first?

Sizes of Orion vehicles
A 1959 report by General Atomics[1] explored the parameters of three different sizes of hypothetical Orion spacecraft:
"satellite"
Orion "midrange"
Orion "super"
Orion
Ship diameter 17-20 m 40 m 400 m
Ship mass 300 t 1-2000 t 8,000,000 t
Number of bombs 540 1080 1080
Individual bomb mass 0.22 t 0.37-0.75 t 3000 t
8,000,000 t ?????
They ARE friggin building a Orion

They were going to add a fighterbay, but it'd have made it 5 times bigger......

Actually the Orion in SG:Atlantis was named after the legendary german SciFi series "Raumpatrouille Orion" from the sixties. It was short lived (only 7 episodes) but badass nonetheless.
The Atlantis producers named their Orion after a chat with a german journalist.

Let's, er, not forget the mythological Orion, here.......
-
Well, it was a joke that the US had a ship called the Orion already...... but hey, it's cool
<runs crying>

Personally, Terrans should name future crafts after Freespace ships! They should include a copy of Descent: Freespace, Silent Threat, Freespace 2, and Freespace Open on every new computer.
I would love to see a Terran fleet modeled after the Freespace crafts!
I would die and go to heaven to see a Hercules in-action!! I would pay any ammount of money to see an Orion-class Destroyer in-action! I am sure many of us would pay anything to see a Freespace ship in-action before our very eyes!
-
I would! Even if it only an Apollo, I would pay many many dollars to see one of them!
-
If I ever become world dicator, I will definately start a space fleet! Expect a Freespace-style fleet based in Sol!
