Title: Stupid Situation resolved, Gracious thanks
Post by: Colonol Dekker on August 24, 2006, 03:07:28 am: Thanks to all the people who had the patience and decency to take the time to be objective about the unfortunate actions. which led to posting some ridiculous images. The google search i ran obviously had some underlying image issues and in future i wiull be a bit more meticulous.

Anyways its all done and dusted, I'm on business in bristol at the moment and its crazy, all the busses are blue or white and most people sound like Justin Lee Collins, Anyone know the beefeater/TravelInn near the city centre?

Which works by the way, I aint going near any hotlinks EVER again.

Hotlinking uses bandwidth and that costs. And it can cost a lot - there have been bills over 13,000$ because someone has hotlinked a video or a large image to some big forums or famous website (ebaum comes to mind). Because of that, many people do stuff like what happened to CD to discourage hotlinking, because it is the only way which really works.
Usually they just come with goatse etc. with a warning text, but other infamous iexamples nclude huge.jpg (crashes computers because of insane virtual memory use, it's a bug in jpg format), tall.jpg (about 17000 pixels tall), wide.jpg (duhh), pain series (pictures of gross diseases, rotten vaginas etc.) or some classy nazi-furry-gay porn. In that context goatse, tubgirl and so on are actually rather mild responses. Some of my images from my space were hotlinked too and I avenged. Oh how I did.

So don't hotlink!

Seriously, not to make a political statement or anything, but i'm just in wonderment how the hell that happened. How it's now a part of our culture.

There's nothing to apologize for. We took the correct action, both when we banned CD and when we unbanned him. :p

But we will post an explanation and an amended policy once we finish hashing it out.

Post by: Descenterace on August 25, 2006, 12:39:57 am: Swapping hotlinked images with something else is an established method of discouraging people. If there was stuff worth hotlinking on my site, I'd redirect all hotlinks to the nastier pictures on the web.

Come to think of it, that works for preventing people from using your 'unsecured' wireless. All unknown hosts simply have their packets mangled according to some simple rules:
* Replace all pictures with goatse,
* Run a Swedish Chef translator on any plaintext that won't break the packet. Recalculate checksums as appropriate.
