Title: Shadows of Lylat is looking for a texture artist!
Post by: DaBrain on August 24, 2006, 09:54:11 am
We need another texture artist asap. Ever since the mod started, I've been the only texture artist in the team.

More and more modellers joined the team and some members started to learn modelling too.

To keep up with the modelling progress we need to find another texture artist.

Requirements:

Interest in texturing
2d art skills. Drawing, or even actual textuing experience would be great.
Basic knowledge of a graphic software (Photoshop, Corel Draw, Paintshop Pro, The Gimp, Paint.net, whatever...) Working with a few layers will be very useful for shine and glow map creation

What's not necessary:
You won't need modelling skills
Or UV mapping skills (we got models that are UV mapped already)
You don't even have to know StarFox and/or Freespace 2 (Some members never played a StarFox game before.)
You also don't need any technical knowledge about texture compression, shine and glow map creation, or anything else that is game engine related. It's actually pretty simple and I'd be glad to explain it you.

I've quickly created a model and UV mapped it. If you're interested, please texture this model and upload either your texture, or a rendered picture of the model together with your texture. The model and the texture will probably make it into the game. (Even though the model isn't very good. ;) ) It's kinda a test...

Actually the UV map isn't very good, but it has a simple layout, which should make it easier to texture.

And this is how the original looks like:

You can download the needed files here:
Download (http://www.game-warden.com/starfox/Non_SF_related_stuff/v_fighter.rar) (800 KB) Game Warden is down!!! DL the attachments. one in this posting and one in my next posting.

The uv mapped model (*.3ds)
UV map (*.tga)
A colored UV map
Colored views of the model

Oh... you're right. I didn't even notice that.

BTW you were working on a 'ship' for SoL too, right.  :drevil:

Einstine909 is offering help with textures!! He started a thread somewhere here offering the help. Thread titled "Need Help?"  in the B5 subforum I think? 8)

Cool , I'll try to make one. But, I precise I have no texturing skill except for making image signature with or without animation within ImageReady. :p

Thanks for the hint. ;) Maybe he'll find a bit time for us too.

You know... that's not a bad starting point. I hope you will give it a try. Your *.pof converting experience would be a big plus too.

Come to the next level!

Great, I'm looking forward to see your map. :)

Ok... i guess now that somebody actually started working on this, it time to give you a hint. I've added a small, but evil 'problem' on the map.

Take a close look at the cockpit and the colors. Can you see it?

Even though both parts (top and bottom) are connected on the UV map, they actually do not match. Well... aint much of a problem. Just imagine a slicing line here:

you've got a nasty texture seam showing on the back of the connectors (hull->side bit) too, I notice.

Yepp. Bad UV map + keeping it as simple as possible.

Well, with a bit luck, it won't be noticeable when the map is done. If not, I can still take care of small things like that later. :)

That little blue recessed area seems to have its recessing walls completely lined up... which means that there'll be some nasty stretching there on a single pixel when it gets mapped. :s

Oh, and eeeeevil on the cocpit thing. :p

The walls of the recessed part have different mapping coordinates. You can see some yellow in the perspective shot. :)

The UV map is bad... but not that bad.

The first pic! :)

Well, there isn't much done yet, so I can't say much about it. Just keep in mind it should look like a better version of the original.

Time for a few tipps. ;)

You should really get some free textures from the net. There are a lot of them out there and a lot of good stuff... ok there is a lot of crap too.

Get a metal map. Put if over the metal part of the map you're working on. Than add some shiny shading and some dirt/scratches to give the whole thing a more worn-out and realistic look.

Try starting off with a base of add noise->motion blur 2pts.... works for me.

Oh, yeah. That's a good idea. Actually I start with noise too (not for all parts though).

BTW,...
A preview shot of the map or the model would be great. :)

Woah, I didn't even know that we had an upgraded version of that fighter done. Man, there are so many things that'll really surprise me once GW gets fixed up again.

Then again, watching everything progress is really surprising.

I'm glad there's some interest here. Keep working at it, Einstine :D

Uhm... what do you mean? This is the only version of this fighter, we've got.

Or do you mean the internal texturing lesson model?

No, I meant that I haven't yet seen our version of the fighter. Our version = upgraded version. :)

Wow... nice job!

It's awesome! You could improve the saturation of the red, but that's about the only suggestion I can give.

Please check your PMs.
